GRACIAS, GRACIAS, GRACIAS !
When you are reading this I am on my way to Puerto Rico
with my priest class-mates for our annual retreat—
pilgrimage—reunion. For years I have been preaching
that the only response to a gift, whether it comes from
God or anyone else, is “Thank You”. And so I thank you
all for a most wonderful Christmas. Thanks also for all
the goodies bestowed upon us priests. As usual, no one
has permission to leave the parish till I return.
REFLECTIONS
THE EPIPHANY OF THE LORD
“The Epiphany is the manifestation of Jesus as Messiah of Isra-
el, son of God and Savior of the world. The great feast of
Epiphany celebrates the adoration of Jesus by the wise men
(magi) form the East, together with this baptism in the Jordan
and the wedding fest at Cana in Galilee. In the magi, representative of the neighboring pagan religions, the Gospel sees
the first fruits of the nations, who welcome the good news of
salvation through the incarnation. The magi’s coming to Jerusalem in order to pay homage to the king of the Jews shows that
they seek in Israel, in the messianic light of the star of David,
the one who will be king of the nations. Their coming means
that pagans can discover Jesus and worship him as Son of God
and Savior of the world only by turning towards the Jews and
receiving from them the messianic promise as contained in the
Old Testament. The Epiphany shows that “ the full number of
the nations’ now takes its ‘place in the family of the patriarchs,’
and acquires Israelitica dignitas (is made ’worthy of the heritage of Israel’).” (Catechism of the Catholic Church, 528)
*****
For multiple reasons I want to share with you some wonderful
passages from Romano Guardini’s great book entitled, “The
Lord”. On the last page of this Bulletin, I copped from Wikipedia a concise biography. Here is a portion of the introduction
written by Joseph Ratzinger, our current Holy Father, Benedict
XVI.
“Romano Guardini’s book The Lord has helped more than one
generation of Christians enter into a deeper relation-ship with
Jesus Christ. When the book first appeared, it offered a new
approach to the spiritual interpretation of Scripture for-which
young people in particular longed; a longing, I might add,
which is being felt again in our own day.
The First World War was everywhere experienced as the collapse of the liberal dram of ever-advancing progress engendered by reason alone. This crisis of liberalism had great
consequences for The Church and theology. Every “rational
Christianity” which the liberal theologians had managed to develop was affected by it. Liberal Biblical interpretation, or exegesis, had actually prepared the ground for this crisis by its attempt to discover behind the “veneer of dogma: the true
“historical” Jesus. Naturally, by the liberal’s way of thinking,
the historical Jesus could be only a mere man. The liberals
thought that everything supernatural, everything pertaining the
mystery of God that surrounded Jesus, was merely the embellishments and exaggerations of believers. Only with everything
supernatural removed could the true figure of Jesus finally
come to view! Already by the turn of the century, however,
Albert Schweitzer had established that such an attempt would
result only in contradictions: such a “sanitized” Jesus could not
be an actual person, but the product of a historian.
As a student Romano Guardini had himself experienced the
drama of liberalism and its collapse, and with a few friends he
set out to find a new path for theology. What came to impress
him in the course of this search was the experience of the liturgy as the place of encounter with Jesus. It is above all in the
liturgy that Jesus is among us, here it is that He speaks to us,
here he lives.
“CHRISTMAS WAS SO BEAUTIFUL!”
I heard this so often last Sunday and it coincided perfectly
with my own sentiments. We give thanks to God for the
Gift of His Son. We give thanks to a virtual army of generous people who made it happen. First and foremost, we
thank Sr. Mary Elizabeth who planned early on with the
Liturgy committee for the celebrations and then was busy
attending to all the details.
“On Saturday, December 17, Jacinta, Preethi, and
Sherli Benjamin, Mike and Kay Boyle, Carol Dvorcak,
Joan and Bob King, Judy and Chuck Light-ner, Debbie McMahon, Kaethe, McGonigle, Carolyn Menard,
Kim Moran, Hank Rettger, Grace Rohrer, and Anjuna Thulung rolled up their sleeves and thor-oughly
cleaned every inch of the Church! Thanks to Car-olyn
Menard and Beth Venditti, the GOOD DEEDS TASK
FORCE coordinators, these 17 people answered the call
and the Christmas cleaning was done!
Christmas Eve morning Marge Pikunas and her daughter (Bunchie) were dutifully present after the 9:30 Mass
to create the beautiful crèche for all parishioners and
friends to view. Dorothy Gloninger and her daughter,
Becky, Kay and Mike Boyle, Carol Foglia, Kaethe McGonigle and Jerry Olsavsky completed the Christmas
environment with a splendid array of Christ-mas flowers
and wreaths. And of course, Filippe and Marlen were on
hand to hang decorations in the high places as well as
make sure the floors in the Church and sanctuary were
spotless. By 12:00, noon, St. Bede Church was ready to
welcome the Christ Child once again!
And since this is still the Christmas season, may I take
this opportunity to ask that as you celebrate this holy season may you and your families be filled with peace and
joy.”
JANUARY FIRST FRIDAY: Begin spiritual preparation for 2012 by taking advantage of the DAY OF ADORATION on FRIDAY, JANUARY 6th, after 9:00 Mass
until 7:00 p.m. This is also the traditional feast of the
Epiphany. Join the Three Kings in adoration before Jesus present on the altar. There is no better person to ask
than Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament to bring peace to the
world and to thank Him for bringing our military men and
women home. Let peace reign in our hearts and the
world! Please remember to sign the Adoration Schedule
in the back of the Church for the times between 2:30-7:00
p.m. The Blessed Sacrament must have ADORERS present at all times.
The FIRST SATURDAY of 2012 is January 7. Continue prayers for peace by being present before the 9:00
a.m. Mass to pray the rosary to Our Lady of Fatima.

SISTERS’ PLACE INC. is a supportive housing
community in Clairton committed to assisting homeless,
single parent families in Southwestern PA. Founded in
1993 by the Tri-Diocesan Sisters Leadership Conference
as an outgrowth of their mission to serve the poor and
needy, Sister’s Place has a mission to assist families toward self-sufficiency by providing permanent and transitional housing and multiple support services including
after-school tutorial and parenting programs. The St. Bede
Good Deeds Workforce met with Sr. Mary Parks, CSJ
and determined three items that will be of great help to
the community; Giant Eagle gift cards to augment their
regular food bank distribution, J.C. Penney gift cards to
help with the purchase of the children’s school uniforms,
and containers of laundry detergent. We will be collecting
these items starting Sunday, January 1 until the end of
January, so please consider donating to this worthy cause.
Please drop gift cards in the collection basket or place in
an envelope in the mail slot at the rectory. Laundry
detergent may be placed at the back of church.
ST. BEDE VETERANS
Edward J. Kenna, U.S.Army
On November 11, 2011 we displayed in the foyer of the
church our planned tribute to St. Bede members of the
Armed Services. John Sysko, our “architect in residence”,
drew up the design that we hope to complete by November
11, 2012. It consists of a large stone bearing the
medallions of the five branches: Army, Navy, Marines, Air
Force & Coast Guard, plus a plaque that reads: “IN
MEMORY OF THE MEMBERS OF THIS PARISH
WHO SERVED TO PRESERVE OUR FREEDOM. ST.
BEDE PARISH, NOVEMBER 11,2011”. I am asking all
of the parishioners to search out photos of their veteran or
active duty family members and let me copy them (and
return the original—I promise!) and include the name, rank
(if you wish), branch of service and time of service. We
will build a library of these on our parish web site. We
have not yet determined how the names will be displayed
at the site, which is in front of the school on Edgerton
Avenue and in the area where the Haupt Memorial flag
pole stands. We hope to have Joseph Vigliotti do his magic
with a cement walkway and to have the students plant the
bushes and flowers that will adorn the site.
MEET MARYANNE LOEBIG
Maryanne leads the young children out for their Liturgy of
the Word every Sunday in Advent and Lent and on the
First and Third Sundays during Ordinary Time. She also
served on the Parish Pastoral Council. Next time you see
her smiling face say hello and thanks.
A PROFILE IN HOLINESS ROMANO GUARDINI
Life and work
Guardini was born in Verona, Italy in 1885, but his family
moved to Mainz when he was one year old and he lived in
Germany for the rest of his life. After studying chemistry in
Tübingen for two semesters, and economics in Munich and
Berlin for three, he discerned a vocation to the priesthood. He
studied Theology in Freiburg im Breisgau and Tübingen, and
was ordained priest in Mainz in 1910. He briefly worked in a
pastoral position before returning to Freiburg to work on his
doctorate in Theology under Engelbert Krebs. He received the
doctorate in 1915, for a dissertation on Bonaventure. He
completed his “Habilitation” in Dogmatic Theology at the
University of Bonn in 1922, again with a dissertation on
Bonaventure. Throughout this period he also worked as a
chaplain to the Catholic youth movement.
In 1923 he was appointed to a chair in Philosophy of Religion at
the University of Berlin, which he held until forced to resign by
the Nazis in 1939. In the 1935 essay “Der Heiland” (The
Saviour) he had openly criticized Nazi mythologizing of the
person of Jesus, and emphasized the Jewishness of Jesus. From
1943 to 1945 he retired to Mooshausen, where his friend Josef
Weiger had been parish priest since 1917.
In 1945 Guardini was appointed professor in the Faculty of
Philosophy at the University of Tübingen, and resumed lecturing
on the Philosophy of Religion. Finally, in 1948, he became
professor at the University of Munich, where he remained until
retiring, for health reasons, in 1962. His ill health prevented him
playing any active role in the Second Vatican Council.
Romano Guardini died in Munich on 1 October 1968. He was
buried in the priests’ cemetery of the Oratory of St Philip Neri in
Munich. His estate was left to the Catholic Academy in Bavaria
that he had co-founded.
Guardini's books were often powerful studies of traditional
themes in the light of present-day challenges, or conversely
examinations of current problems as approached from the
Christian, and especially Catholic, tradition. He was able to get
inside such different worldviews as those of Socrates, Plato,
Augustine, Dante, Pascal, Kierkegaard and Nietzsche, and make
sense of them for modern readers.
His first major work, Vom Geist der Liturgie (The Spirit of the
Liturgy), published during the First World War, was a major
influence on the Liturgical Movement in Germany, and so
ultimately on the liturgical reforms of the Second Vatican
Council.[1] Pope Paul VI offered to make him a cardinal in 1965,
but he respectfully declined.
Guardini's book, The Lord, published in English translation by
Henry Regnery Publishing in the late 1940s, remained in print
for decades and, according to Henry Regnery, was "one of the
most successful books I have ever published."[3]
