1 EUPLAN Platelet Conference
1st EUPLAN Platelet Conference
th
September 19-21th 2012,
Grand Hotel de l’Empereur Maastricht, The Netherlands
WELCOME MESSAGE
A warm welcome to Maastricht, one of the oldest cities in the Netherlands with a southern
atmosphere, for this first meeting of the European Platelet Network (EUPLAN) in Grand Hôtel
de l’Empereur. The program, including a special clinical session, is very international and
exciting with 36 oral presentations and 98 poster presentations.
Europe has a strong history in platelet research with meetings at a regular base since 1983,
especially in Germany, the United Kingdom, Italy and France. In addition, the recently
revitalized European Thrombosis Research Organization (ETRO) and the various national
Thrombosis and Haemostasis Societies are active in stimulating and facilitating platelet
research. The EUPLAN initiative started in October 2009 in Toulouse, when leading platelet
scientists agreed that there is a need for regular meetings on a European level to exchange
ideas and to support high quality basic and clinical research on platelets and
megakaryocytes, next to the existing national meetings. However, the EUPLAN initiative
goes further than only organizing conferences (see website http://euplan.eu/).
The undertaking of the conference has been made possible by the generous support of our
sponsors (see previous and next pages). We are very grateful for this. Please, visit their
displays during the meeting.
We hope that you have a pleasant stay in Maastricht.
Johan Heemskerk and Judith Cosemans (on behalf of the organizing committee)
