Mit der ersten „impulse“Ausgabe im März 2002
hat die VEM-Unternehmensgruppe mit ihren 5
Produktionswerken und
5 Vertriebsgesellschaften
im In- und Ausland einen
Akzent gesetzt, ein sichtbares Zeichen nach dem
fünfjährigen und erfolgreichen Umstrukturierungsprozess der Werke und der Geschäftsprozesse.
Seit der Übernahme der unternehmerischen
Verantwortung durch Herrn Dr. Merckle
standen der Kundenservice, die Flexibilität und die kurzen Reaktionszeiten auf Kundenwünsche verstärkt im Zentrum unseres
Bemühens.
Die Erfolge der letzten Jahre und das positive und partnerschaftliche Kundenecho
auf der Hannover Messe und der IFAT München zeigen uns, dass wir uns in dem
hart umkämpften Elektromaschinen- und
Gießereimarkt erfolgreich etabliert haben.

VEM-Group Earns Strong Recognition
VEM-Gruppe „Wir dürfen eine insgesamt
positive Bilanz ziehen." Dieses erfreuliche Urteil über den Verlauf der Hannover Messe 2002
fällte der Präsident des Zentralverbandes der
Elektrotechnik- und Elektronikindustrie, Dietmar Harting, im Anschluss an die Messetage
vom 15. bis 20. April. Die VEM-Gruppe konnte
das unterstreichen: Die Erwartungen unseres
Elektromaschinenbauunternehmens wurden
sogar übertroffen. Der neue VEM-Messestand, nun wieder in Halle 11, fand regen
Zuspruch. Er demonstrierte die Geschlossenheit der VEM-Gruppe, ohne darauf zu verzichten, das Erzeugnisspektrum der einzelnen Unternehmen darzustellen.
Neue Perspektiven und Möglichkeiten sollten
aufgezeigt, neue Kontakte geknüpft und alte
gepflegt werden. Dieses Ziel hat das Messeteam hervorragend umgesetzt und gezeigt,
wo VEM derzeit steht und welche Wege gegangen werden. Bei der Präsentation wurde
das Profil der VEM-Gruppe als Partner des
international tätigen Maschinen- und Anlagenbaus deutlich. Dem Thema „Energy“ verpflichtet, war das von VEM ausgestellte Sortiment
geprägt von Applikationen der Energieerzeu-
gung. Generatoren aus dem Sachsenwerk
Dresden und von motors Wernigerode standen
genauso im Blickfeld wie Methoden, die zeigten, wie Energie sinnvoll eingesetzt bzw. gegenüber herkömmlichen Methoden eingespart
werden kann. Dafür standen die Energiesparmotoren und spezielle Applikationen für den
Walzwerksbereich.
Starke Beachtung fanden auch die Kompaktantriebe von motors Wernigerode und Thurm.
Ihre Bedeutung wächst mit der zunehmenden Automatisierung. Für das Dresdner Sachsenwerk war es wichtig, dass diesmal namhafte Wettbewerber der Branche auf der Messe
fehlten. Daraus entwickelten sich Kontakte bis
hin zu Geschäftsbeziehungen in einem völlig
neuen Kundenspektrum. Ein feuerroter Hydrant symbolisierte die Produktpalette aus
Krauschwitz. Zugleich wurde damit der Hinweis
der Teilnahme der Keulahütte an der Messe
„IFAT“ in München gegeben. Großes Interesse fanden die Aktivitäten der VEM-Gruppe im
E–Business. Mit dem geschlossenen Marktplatz „PROCUNET“ und dem elektronischen
Katalog in der neuesten Version 3.0 wurden
zwei wichtige Beispiele vorgestellt.

Unternehmen, z. B. der Windenergie, zeigt,
dass VEM heute die Entwicklung im Elektromaschinenbau wieder mitbestimmt.

VEM-Group "We can draw up a positive
balance overall." The president of the central
association of the electrical engineering and
electronics industries (ZVEI), Dietmar Harting,
made this very pleasing assessment of the
results of the 2002 Hanover Fair, which took
place from 15th to 20th April. The VEM
group was more than able to underline his
words: Our expectations were even surpassed. The new VEM fair stand, now back in
Hall 11, was a popular meeting place. It demonstrated the unity of the VEM-Group, but
without neglecting to present the specific
product ranges of the individual companies.
The objective was to show new perspectives
and possibilities, to establish new contacts
and to underpin longstanding relationships.
This aim was implemented excellently by the
fair team, illustrating where VEM stands and
which paths are to be taken. The presentations emphasised the profile of the VEM-Group
as a global partner of the machinery and plant
engineering branch. With due commitment
to the theme "energy", the range of the VEM
exhibits was characterised by applications
for power generation. The generators from
Sachsenwerk Dresden and VEM motors
Wernigerode were as much a focus of attention as the technologies for efficient energy
use and savings compared to conventional
methods. Examples here were the energysaving motors and special applications for
rolling mills.
Compact drives from motors Wernigerode
and motors Thurm also caught the visitors'
eye. Their significance is growing in line with
the advances in automation. For Sachsenwerk Dresden it was important to note that
numerous renowned representatives of the
branch were missing at the fair this year.
This facilitated contacts and even business
relationships to a whole new circle of customers. A flame-red hydrant symbolised the
product range from Keulahütte Krauschwitz
and at the same time pointed to the company's participation at the "IFAT" in Munich.
Great interest was shown in the activities of
the VEM-Group in e-business. The closed
marketplace "PROCUNET" and the electronic
catalogue in the new version 3.0 were two
important examples to be presented.
The response from representatives of leading enterprises, e.g. in wind energy conversion, shows that VEM is today once more
helping to shape developments in electrical
engineering.

Dear readers,
When, in March 2002, the first edition of
"impulse” was published by the VEM group
with its 5 manufacturing plants and 5 marketing companies both in Germany and
abroad, this was a significant step, a visible
sign of the group’s success in carrying out
a complex restructuring programme over
the past five years.
Since Dr Merckle’s assumption of corporate responsibility, our company has been
paying increased attention to customer
service, flexibility and rapid response to
customers’ wishes.
The successes achieved over the past few
years, along with the positive echoes received from our customers at the Hanover
Trade Fair and the Munich IFAT, indicate that
we have managed to establish our presence
on the highly competitive market for electric machines and foundry products.
Our personnel have secure jobs and are
proud of their company. Their high level of
motivation is felt by our customers, who have
come to recognise the VEM group as a stable
and dependable feature of the European
business landscape.
We hope that this second edition of
"impulse” will meet with as positive a
response as the first.

Fair Highlights
Reges Interesse an einer Zusammenarbeit
mit VEM im internationalen Projektgeschäft
bekundete während der Hannover Messe
eine Delegation von TOSHIBA. Als erster
Schritt ist der Abschluss einer Rahmenvereinbarung geplant. Die Delegation besichtigte im Anschluss an den Messebesuch den VEM-Betrieb in Wernigerode.
Eine Liefervereinbarung für das laufende
Jahr wurde mit dem chilenischen VEMVertreter abgeschlossen. Zugleich wurde
vereinbart, die Zusammenarbeit auf weitere Länder Südamerikas auszudehnen.
Vertraglich fixiert wird eine intensive Zusammenarbeit mit dem brasilianischen
Unternehmen C+Tecnologia. Das vereinbarte VEM mit dem Direktor von C+Tecnologia.
During the Hanover Fair, a delegation
from TOSHIBA expressed strong interest
in cooperation with VEM in international
project business. The conclusion of a framework agreement is planned as the first step.
The meetings at the fair were followed by
a visit to the VEM facilities in Wernigerode.
A delivery agreement for the current year
has been signed with the VEM agent in
Chile. It was also agreed to extend cooperation to other countries in South America.
Contracts on intensive cooperation were
also finalised with the director of the
Brazilian enterprise C+Tecnologia.

langer Name, viel dahinter. Dort präsentierte
sich VEM motors U.K. Limited erstmals auf
einer Messe. Vom 28. bis 30. Mai 2002 zog
der neu entwickelte VEM-Stand in Halle 20
des National Exhibition Centre viele Fachbesucher an. Mit seinen fünf Metern Höhe
den Großteil der Konkurrenz überragend, war
er für die Besucher weithin sichtbar. Die kleine Auswahl an Spezialmotoren am Stand weckte sichtlich die Neugier des Fachpublikums
auf das umfangreiche Angebot von VEM. Nach
den drei Messetagen herrschte Zufriedenheit bei VEM motors U.K: Interessante Fachgespräche und viel versprechende Kontakte
bieten eine gute Grundlage, um weitere Anteile auf dem englischen Markt zu erobern.
Dabei ist VEM motors U.K., die jüngste Tochter von VEM motors, noch nicht einmal ein
Jahr alt. Erst im August 2001 sind Frank
Taylor als Managing Director und Keith Wayman
als Area Sales Manager bei VEM eingestiegen. Seit neustem wird der Verkaufsbereich
durch Steve Mayo verstärkt. Sie alle engagieren sich mit voller Kraft dafür, vor allem
größere Kunden auf dem britischen Markt zu
gewinnen. Der Name VEM ist auf der britischen Insel schon seit langem ein Begriff, da
Vertriebspartner wie Elektrotorc oder Vacon
die Qualitätsmotoren aus Deutschland bereits zu DDR-Zeiten erfolgreich verkauft haben und dies bis heute tun.

clearly aroused the curiosity of the visiting
specialists about the wide range of products
on offer from VEM. After the three-day trade
fair, VEM motors UK was fully satisfied: many
interesting discussions had taken place and
promising contacts made - a good basis for
winning a larger share of the British market.
And VEM motors UK, the youngest subsidiary
of VEM motors, is not even a year old yet. It was
only in August 2001 that Frank Taylor and Keith
Wayman took up their posts as VEM’s Managing
Director and Area Sales Manager, respectively. In addition, the Sales section has recently welcomed Steve Mayo . They are all working
hard, in particular to gain larger-scale customers on the British market. The name VEM
has been well known in Britain for a long time,
as marketing partners such as Elektrotorc
and Vacon were successful in selling quality
motors from Germany even during GDR times,
and they continue to do so today.

long name with a great deal behind it. VEM
motors UK Ltd held its first exhibition at this
event. From 28th – 30th May 2002, the newly
developed VEM stand in Hall 20 of the National
Exhibition Centre attracted a large number of
specialists in the field. At a height of five metres,

Keulahütte Die Teilnahme an der IFAT 2002
– Internationale Fachmesse für Wasser/
Abwasser in München – ist für die Keulahütte ein „Muss“. Zum dritten Mal waren wir
bei dem mittlerweile wichtigsten Höhepunkt
der Marketingaktivitäten unseres Unternehmens dabei. Viel Lob der Kunden und
Gäste ernteten wir für unseren Messestand,
der sich mit einer Größe von 120 Quadratmetern sehen lassen konnte. Insgesamt
wurden an den fünf Messetagen rund 200
Gespräche mit schon bekannten, aber auch
mit potenziellen neuen Kunden geführt. Ein
Drittel davon waren internationale Kontakte.
Keulahütte Participation in IFAT 2002 –
the International Specialist Trade Fair for Water
and Waste Water, which took place in Munich
– was a ‘must’ for Keulahütte. This was the
third time that we were present at what has
become the most important of our company’s marketing activities. We received a
great deal of praise from customers and guests
for our exhibition stand, which – at 120 sqm –
was an impressive sight. During the five-day
event, a total of approx. 200 conversations
took place with past and current customers
and also with potential new customers. One
third of these were international contacts.

Freiherr von Rothkirch, wurde ein bedeutender Liefervertrag für Osteuropa unterzeichnet.

Dessau", Robert Westerberger, Bombardier Transportation, erreichte uns das folgende Dankschreiben, welches wir gern
auszugsweise veröffentlichen:
Sehr geehrte Kolleginnen und Kollegen,
am 19. Februar hat die Dessauer Verkehrsgesellschaft und die TAB des Landes Sachsen-Anhalt die erste neue Niederflurstraßenbahn NGT 6 aus dem Hause
Bombardier abgenommen. Ich möchte mich
auf diese Weise bei Ihnen allen recht herzlich bedanken. Ohne Ihr Mitwirken hätte
es sicherlich nicht geklappt, innerhalb von
18 Monaten die elektrische Ausrüstung
einer neuen Straßenbahngeneration kostengerecht auf die Beine zu stellen.

On 19th February, the Dessau Transport
Company and the TAB of the federal state
of Saxony-Anhalt officially took possession
of the first new NGT 6 low-platform tram built
by Bombardier. I should like to take this opportunity to thank you all very much. Without your work it would surely not have been
possible to produce the electrical equipment for a new generation of trams within
18 months and at an acceptable cost.

VEM Sachsenwerk Dass seit 31.05.2002
die VW-Luxuslimousine „Phaeton“ bei den
Händlern steht, daran hat auch das VEM
Sachsenwerk in Dresden seinen Anteil.
So werden die für die Montage des „Phaeton“
erforderlichen Baugruppen mit der CarGoTram (Foto unten) angeliefert, der ersten
Güterstraßenbahn des 21. Jahrhunderts. Hersteller der Bahn ist die Schalker Eisenhütte
Gelsenkirchen. Die in VW-Blau lackierte 5teilige Straßenbahn ist 60 m lang und wird
von 20 VEM-Drehstromfahrmotoren, die
jeweils eine Leistung von 42 kW haben, angetrieben. Gespeist werden unsere Motoren
von leistungsstarken Traktionswechselrichtern
der Bombardier Transportation, FAGA Berlin.
Eine Bahn ist in der Lage, 60 t Zuladung aufzunehmen und kann damit etwa 3 LKWLastzüge ersetzen.
Seit Beginn des Jahres 2001 sind auf den
Dresdner Gleisen zwei CarGo Trams zu
beobachten, die zuverlässig ihre Transportaufgaben für den VW-Konzern erledigen.

VEM Sachsenwerk Since 31st May 2002
the VW luxury limousine, the "Phaeton” has
been on sale in dealers’ showrooms – and
that this is so is partly thanks to VEM Sachsenwerk in Dresden. This is because components
required for assembling the "Phaeton” are
delivered by CarGoTram (see photo below),
the first goods tram of the 21st century. The
tram is manufactured by Schalker ironworks
in Gelsenkirchen. The 5-section tram, painted in VW blue, is 60 m long and is powered
by 20 VEM threephase A.C. traction motors,
each with a capacity of 42 kW. The current
for our motors is supplied by powerful traction current converters made by Bombardier
Transportation, FAGA Berlin. One tram can
carry a load of 60 t and can thus replace
about 3 lorries. Since the beginning of 2001,
there have been two CarGoTrams on the
rails of Dresden’s tram network, and these
can frequently be seen going about their
transportation work on behalf of VW.

Veero Sengodan: Sales Manager in Singapore
VEM-Gruppe In der Ausgabe 01 der
„impulse“ war zu lesen, dass VEM in
Singapur ein Verkaufsbüro eröffnet hat.
Herr Veera Sengodan (33) ist der Verkaufsleiter dieser Repräsentanz. Der gelernte Elektroingenieur wurde Anfang
April 2002 bei VEM angestellt. Er ist in
Singapur geboren und hat in Großbritannien Elektrotechnik studiert. Mit dieser
Qualifikation arbeitete Veera Sengodan
in den vergangenen Jahren für verschiedene europäische Unternehmen vornehmlich im Projektgeschäft. Seine Gebiete
waren dabei die Petrolchemie sowie die
Erdöl- und Gasindustrie in der Asia-PacificRegion. Bei VEM sieht der Ingenieur seine
Aufgabe darin, das Unternehmen in dieser Region bekanntzumachen und über
diesen Weg neue Kunden zu gewinnen.
Nach und nach will Sengodan deshalb
seine Aktivitäten über Singapur hinaus
auch auf andere Länder der Region ausdehnen, um dort die VEM-Vertreter und
die Direktkunden technisch und kommerziell zu beraten und zu unterstützen.

opened a sales office in Singapore. Mr.
Veera Sengodan (33), a graduate electrical engineer, is the sales manager at this
representative office, having joined VEM
at the beginning of April 2002. He was
born in Singapore and studied electrical
engineering in Great Britain. With this
qualification, Veera Sengodan has worked for various European companies in
recent years, predominantly in project
business. His special fields have been
petrochemicals and the oil and gas industry in the Asia-Pacific region. He sees
his task at VEM to be to make the name
known in the region and in this way to
gain new customers. To this end, Veera
Sengodan intends to expand his activities beyond Singapore into the other
countries of the region, and there to offer
technical and commercial advice and
support to the local VEM agents and to
direct customers.

Ganz am Anfang
stand das Interesse der Brüder Alfred und Kurt
Stephan für alle Dinge und Erscheinungen,
die sich um die noch junge Entdeckung Elektrizität drehten. Begeistert von der rasanten
Entwicklung der Elektrotechnik, gründeten die
Brüder 1908 ein Unternehmen und eröffneten
ein Elektrogeschäft.
Später wurden im Betrieb der Brüder bis zur
Enteignung im Jahre 1945 Motoren und Getriebe produziert. Diese Tradition konnte bereits Mitte 1946 fortgesetzt werden. In der DDR
galt das Elektromaschinenwerk als alleiniger
Hersteller von Getriebemotoren. Der volkseigene Betrieb war Zulieferer für 6.000 Industriebetriebe des Schwermaschinen- und
Anlagenbaus und wichtigster Exportbetrieb
des Elektromaschinenbaus. Allein am heutigen Standort der VEM motors Thurm GmbH
an der Äußeren Dresdener Straße in Zwickau
waren damals 1.800 Elektromaschinenbauer
beschäftigt.
Nach der Wende startete das Unternehmen
einen schwierigen Anpassungsprozess, der
kaum leichter zu bewältigen war als die Firmengründung vor rund 55 Jahren. Viele Elektromaschinenbauer – darunter vor allem junge
Leute – mussten das Unternehmen verlassen,
damit dieses überhaupt überleben konnte.
Heute sind bei motors Thurm 296 Mitarbeiter und 10 Lehrlinge angestellt und es werden
branchenübliche Pro-Kopf-Umsätze erreicht.
Das Produktionsprofil wird nach wie vor vom
Elektromotor bestimmt, hat aber trotzdem andere entscheidende Züge angenommen. Wurden früher Motoren in Großserien hergestellt,
dominiert heute zunehmend die Produktion
angepasster Antriebe je nach Kundenwunsch.
Das erfordert vom Unternehmen hohe Flexibilität, beginnend von der Konstruktion über
Fertigung und Montage bis hin zur Logistik. Entsprechend wird seit Jahren ins Unternehmen
gezielt investiert. Zu den größten Ausgaben
zählte der Ersatz der alten Tränkanlage aus dem
Jahr 1978. Investiert wurde darüber hinaus
in die neue Bandagiertechnik in der Wickelei,
eine Farbgebungsanlage, Druckgussmaschinen
und neue Serienprüffelder. Zu den jüngsten
Investitionen gehört die neue CNC-Technik
für Wellen- und Lagerschildbearbeitung.
Viel wird bei Thurm für die Personalentwicklung
getan. Die eigene Lehrausbildung sichert planmäßig den Facharbeiterbedarf der nächsten
Jahre. Darüber hinaus pflegt das Unternehmen
enge Kontakte zur TH Zwickau. Über die Vergabe von Forschungsthemen als Diplomarbeiten soll zukünftiger Bedarf an ingenieurtechnischem Personal für Forschung, Entwicklung
und Konstruktion gesichert werden. Das ist
nötig, um mit den Produkten auch zukünftig
auf dem Weltmarkt mithalten zu können.
Immerhin liegt der Export schon heute bei 45
Prozent. Zu traditionellen Exportländern zählen
Dänemark, Frankreich und Finnland. Doch
der Blick nach Übersee, zum Beispiel in die
USA, ist längst offen. Im Inland zählen renommierte Firmen aus dem Maschinen- und
Anlagenbau, der Pumpen- und Lüfterindustrie,
dem Schiffbau, Getriebehersteller und die
chemische Industrie zu den Kunden.

interest in all things and phenomena connected with the still recent discovery of electricity.
Driven by their enthusiasm for the rapid developments in electrical engineering, the two
brothers founded a business in
1908 and opened a shop for
electrical products.
Later, the company produced
motors and gear-boxes – up to
its expropriation in 1945. The
traditions were already taken up
anew in 1946. In the GDR, the
so-called "Elektromaschinenwerk" was the sole manufacturer of geared motors. The nationally owned company was a
supplier to 6,000 industrial enterprises in heavy machinery
and plant engineering and the
most important export company
in the electrical engineering
branch. At today's location of
VEM motors Thurm GmbH on
the Äußere Dresdner Straße in
Zwickau alone, there were at
that time 1,800 employees.

phase of reorientation, a period scarcely easier
to master than the founding of the company
some 55 years ago. Many loyal employees –
among them above all young people – had to
leave the company to enable it to survive at all.
The workforce at VEM motors Thurm today
counts 296 employees and 10 apprentices, who
together again achieve turnovers into the tens
of millions.
The production profile is still determined by
electric motors, but has nevertheless adopted
other decisive traits. Whereas motors were previously manufactured in large series, today's
production is increasingly dominated by customer-tailored adapted drives. This calls for exceptional flexibility, from design to manufacturing and assembly and right through to
logistics. For several years now, the investments
at the company have been geared to this
development. One of the largest projects was
the replacement of the old impregnation plant
dating from 1978. Considerable capital has also
gone into new banding equipment in the winding department, a new paint shop, die-casting
machines and new series test beds. The most
recent investments have included new CNC
systems for shaft and end-shield machining.
Personnel development is placed in the forefront at Thurm. The company's own training
schemes will meet the planned demand for
skilled workers in the coming years. The company also maintains close contacts to the
Zwickau Technical College. The assigning of
research topics as degree dissertations is
intended to help satisfy the future demand for
engineering staff in research, development and
design. This is important to enable the company and its products to hold their present
position on the world market. After all, the
export quota is already today 45 per cent. The
traditional export destinations include Denmark,
France and Finland. But sights have already
been set farther afield, for example in the USA.
Domestic customers include renowned companies in machinery and plant engineering,
the pumps and fans industry, shipbuilding,
gear-system manufacturing and the chemical
industry.

Information is give on a whole number of product ranges which have been included in an
electronic catalogue from VEM for the first
time. These new products range from standard
motors, via fire gas exhausting fan and roller
table motors to monitoring devices. All that is
required is an IBM-compatible PC with at least
32 MB RAM and approx. 10 MB free space on
the hard disk. The program runs under
Windows 95/98/2000/NT. The texts can be
selected in German, English, French or Danish
language versions. One new feature is the
browser interface, which now corresponds in
its functionality to the VEM Internet presentation. Users with access to the VEM Intranet are
also able to call up the catalogue there.

VEM-Gruppe Im April 2002 ist der neue
elektronische Katalog der VEM-Gruppe erschienen. Das Programm der Version 3.0 auf
CD-ROM unterstützt die Kunden von VEM bei
Auswahl und Konfiguration der Produkte des
Unternehmens. Es ist möglich, Datenblätter
und Anfrageformulare auszudrucken sowie
maßstabsgerechte und bemaßte Zeichnungen
der Erzeugnisse anzuzeigen und diese sogar
im DXF-Format zu exportieren. Natürlich enthält der elektronische Katalog auch allge-
meine Informationen zur VEM-Gruppe. Genauso sind Kataloge, Ersatzteillisten, Bedienungsund Wartungsanleitungen der Produktgruppen
abrufbar. Der Katalog bietet Informationen zu
einer ganzen Reihe von Sortimenten, die erstmals in einem elektronischen VEM-Katolog
berücksichtigt werden. Diese neuen Sortimente
reichen von Standardmotoren über Brandgasund Rollgangmotoren bis zu Überwachungsgeräten. Alles, was Interessenten benötigen, ist
ein IBM- oder kompatibler PC, der wenigstens

Esmac 0y Die finnische VEM-Tochter
Esmac Oy verfügt überall in Finnland und im
Baltikum über ein Netz von 40 Wiederverkäufern. Ausführliche Sachkenntnis ist eines
der wichtigsten Mittel, um beim Verkauf der
VEM-Produkte erfolgreich zu sein. Deshalb
pflegt Esmac eine Tradition: Einmal jährlich
treffen sich die Verkäufer zu einer Schulung.
Neben der Vermittlung von Grundkenntnissen gibt es stets Themen, die den Erfahrungsschatz aller ergänzen helfen.
Das war auch beim letzten Treffen am 27.
und 28. Mai der Fall. Die Esmac-Schulung

Oy has a network of 40 dealers throughout
Finland and the Baltic states. Detailed knowledge of the goods is one of the most important
keys to success in selling VEM products. That
is why Esmac has developed a special tradition: once a year all those involved in sales
attend a training session. As well as providing
basic knowledge there are always topics that
help to develop each individual’s range of experience.
That was the case on 27th and 28th May this
year. The Esmac Training Session was based
on the three main product groups: motors, frequency converters and gears. With regard to
the motors, the topic this time was "Rating
limits and cut-off points in VEM motors in frequency conversion operation”. Of course, the
new electronic VEM catalogue was also
shown.

VEM-Gruppe. Nachdem bereits im Juli
2001 die Isolationssysteme der Wärmeklassen 155 (F) und 180 (H) durch Underwriters Laboratories Inc.® (UL) approbiert
worden sind, bestand die VEM motors
GmbH auch erfolgreich das Zulassungsverfahren für alle wichtigen Motorenreihen
bzw. -konstruktionen. Damit sind die Baureihen K..., W..., S..., A... und B... für die
VEM motors Thurm GmbH und VEM motors GmbH Wernigerode nach den Vorschriften von UL zugelassen.
Zu berücksichtigen ist, dass die Vorschriften von UL generell eine Obergrenze der
Bemessungsspannung von 600 V festlegen. Weiterhin ist zu beachten, dass alle
Anbau- und Einbaukomponenten mit Betriebsspannungen über 25 V ebenfalls
durch UL approbiert sein müssen. Die
aktuellen Daten zu beiden File-Nummern
stehen im Internet unter der Adresse
www.ul.com. Die so genannten „Gelben
Karten“ von UL sind im Bedarfsfall über
die Auftragszentren der Werke zu beziehen. Sie enthalten allerdings genau die
gleichen Daten wie die entsprechenden
Files im Internet. Bestellungen müssen
immer den Hinweis auf UL-Ausführung
enthalten, da teilweise gesonderte Werkstoffe und Bauteile eingesetzt werden.
Eine nachträgliche UL-Kennzeichnung von
Lagermotoren ist definitiv ausgeschlossen.
Die Kennzeichnung erfolgt auf dem Leistungsschild mit dem Symbol für „UL-Recognized Component“. Die elektrische
Ausführung nach NEMA MG1 ist selbstverständlich weiterhin möglich.

VEM Sachsenwerk Ein besonderes Jubiläum steht im Sachsenwerk Dresden ins Haus:
das Unternehmen wird demnächst den tausendsten 1,5-MW-Generator für ein Windkraftwerk ausliefern. Das erprobte und bewährte
Windkraft-Programm der VEM Sachsenwerk
GmbH bietet Generatoren mit Leistungen
zwischen 1,5 und 3,7 MW an. Das ist auch
der Grund, weshalb das Unternehmen heute
die wichtigsten deutschen Windkraftanlagenhersteller zu seinen Kunden zählen kann.
Bei den Maschinen handelt es sich um so genannte doppelt speisende Asynchrongeneratoren, die zwar speziell für den Einsatz in
Windkraftanlagen konstruiert sind, aber auf
einer unifizierten Schleifringläufer-Baureihe
basieren. Das hat den Vorteil, dass diese
Maschinen ebenso in anderen Industriebereichen, beispielsweise für Kompressoren oder
Pumpen, einsetzbar sind. Schleifringläufermaschinen bietet das VEM Sachsenwerk bis
zu einer Leistung von 8 MW an. Die VEM
Sachsenwerk GmbH sind für entsprechende
Aufträge gut gewappnet. Gezielte Investitionen bilden die Grundlage, um national und
international mit Qualitätserzeugnissen bestehen zu können.

tested and proven
wind-power
programme from Sachsenwerk comprises
generators with outputs between 1.5
and 3.7 MW. That is
only one of the reasons why the company is today able to
count the most important wind-energy
plant manufacturers
among its customers.
The machines involved are so-called
double-fed asynchronous generators, which are designed
specially for use in wind power generation
but are nevertheless based on a standard
slip-ring series. This brings the advantage
that these machines are equally applicable
in other industrial branches, e.g. for compressors or pumps. Sachsenwerk offers slipring machines for outputs up to 8 MW and is
well equipped to handle corresponding
orders. Carefully planned investments form
the basis for quality products satisfying
national and international requirements.

stellen im Produktionsspektrum von motors
Thurm eine Besonderheit dar. Die extremen Bedingungen, unter denen die Motoren zum Einsatz kommen, müssen im
Werk schon in der Entwicklungsphase
simuliert werden, damit die Temperaturbeständigkeit der Elektromotoren ermittelt werden kann. Zusätzlich zu den ExtremTemperaturen gilt es natürlich auch, die
normalen äußeren Motorbelastungen zu
erzeugen, um zu einer realen Einschätzung kommen zu können.
Bei motors Thurm wurden jetzt die Baureihen K21R71...BRG bis K21R112...BRG
getestet. Ergebnis: Die Brandgasmotoren
haben die Normanforderungen bei einer
erhöhten Temperatur von 400 Grad Celsius
über zwei Stunden unter Belastung erfüllt.

products manufactured by motors Thurm.
The extreme conditions in which the motors
are used have to be simulated at the works
during the development phase so as to
determine the temperature stability of the
electric motors. In addition to the extreme
temperatures, the normal external stress on
the motors has to be recreated, in order to
arrive at a realistic assessment.
The K21R71 ... BRG to K21R112 ... BRG are
currently being tested at motors Thurm. The
result: the conflagration gas motors have
fulfilled the requirements of the norm at a
temperature of 400° C for two hours under
conditions of stress.

Now, VEM motors GmbH has also successfully completed the certification procedures for all important motor series
and designs. The series K..., W..., S...,
A... and B... from VEM motors Thurm
GmbH and VEM motors GmbH Wernigerode
are thus now approved to UL rules.
It must be noted that UL stipulates a
general upper limit for the rated voltage
of 600 V. Furthermore, all built-on and
integrated components with operating
voltages over 25 V must also be ULapproved. The current data on both file
numbers are to be found on the Internet
under www.ul.com. The so-called UL
"yellow cards" can be obtained where
required through the order centres of the
individual works, though they contain only
exactly the same data as the corresponding files on the Internet. Orders must always
include a reference to the UL version, as
special materials and parts may be used.
Later UL markings for stock motors are
definitely excluded. The approval is marked on the rating plate with the symbol
for "UL-recognized component". Electrical specification to NEMA MG1 is
naturally possible as before.

Die Feierlichkeiten zum
40. Jahrestag des Warenzeichenverbandes
VEM, der diesjährige Messeauftritt in Hannover,
Birmingham und Antwerpen, die neuen Druckerzeugnisse – all das zeugt vom neuen
Auftritt der VEM-Gruppe in der Öffentlichkeit.
Initiiert und organisiert wurde das Ganze von
der Leiterin der neuen Abteilung Öffentlichkeitsarbeit, Sabine Michel. Die 39-jährige ist
seit immerhin 15 Jahren im Unternehmen,
begann im Bereich Materialökonomie, war
nach der Wende im Bereich Qualitätssicherung tätig. Sie stieß kurze Zeit später zur
Marketingabteilung.
Direkt der Geschäftsführung unterstellt, verantwortet Sabine Michel die Kommunikationsaktivitäten aller VEM-Unternehmen weltweit. „Die ersten Zeichen unseres neuen Herangehens haben wir mit großem Erfolg in
den letzten Wochen gesetzt“, resümiert sie
und ergänzt: „Aber wir stehen erst am Anfang eines anspruchsvollen Weges. Lassen Sie
uns ein wenig Zeit und wir werden noch mit
der einen oder anderen Überraschung aufwarten.“

The celebrations to mark
the 40th anniversary of the VEM Trademark
Association, this year's fair presentations in
Hannover, Birmingham and Antwerp, new
brochures and other printed materials – this
is all part of the new public image of the VEM
group. This whole campaign was initiated
and organised by the head of the new department for public relations, Sabine Michel
(39). She has been with the company for
some 15 years, starting off in materials
management, before taking over the department for quality assurance and later the
marketing department.
Answering directly to the central management, Sabine Michel is responsible for the
communication activities of all VEM companies worldwide. "The first examples of our
new approach have already been implemented with great success in recent weeks," she
sums up, and adds: "But we are still at the
start of a demanding path. Give us a little
time and we promise you a whole host of
further surprises."
