This championship was created to promote the theme of a new form of sustainable mobility and development of technologies linked to electric propulsion, by bringing racing to the heart of the great cities of the world. Last year, the Berlin ePrix was held in the grounds of Tempelhof Airport and this year’s new venue fits perfectly with all those criteria. Berlin is one of the most important capital cities of the world, the cultural and political centre of Germany, a country where the automobile industry plays a significant role and where awareness of mobility for the future is particularly widespread. The championship is heading towards a thrilling finale and the fight for the two titles is getting ever tighter. Lucas di Grassi and Sebastien Buemi are battling for the Drivers’ crown, while Renault e.Dams and ABT Schaeffler Audi Sport seem to have pulled away from their pursuers in the battle between the teams. With the racing finely balanced, this adds a further element of spectacle and even more excitement to the championship. I’m sure that Formula E Holdings, with the precious collaboration as always of DMSB, will put on a show for the event’s spectators which matches the appeal of the city of Berlin itself. 2016 FIA Formula E BMW i Berlin ePrix | 5 A VICTORY IN THE RACE AGAINST TIME Alejandro Agag Formula E, CEO I am absolutely delighted that we are all here in Germany this weekend for the second Berlin ePrix. Last year’s race at Tempelhof was a great success, with close racing and a large passionate crowd. However, the unforeseen unavailability of that site meant we faced a race against time to find a new venue for this race, and I want to extend a huge thank you to everybody that helped to put together this event on Karl-Marx-Allee in record time. As we are only too aware, putting on a street race in a major capital city is an enormous undertaking, that can only work with the help and co-operation of the city itself. It is testimony to the desire of the city of Berlin that they were able to assist us in relocating this race at such short notice. Germany is an incredibly important market for Formula E. The German car industry has raised the standards of car manufacture over recent decades and we are very proud to have the BMW i brand as our Official Vehicle Partner, while it will also be a great event for DHL, our official Logistics Partner. Germany has also produced some fantastic racing drivers throughout history and I’m sure that Nick Heidfeld and Daniel Abt will receive some very passionate support on Saturday. 8 | ABOUT FORMULA E DRIVE THE FUTURE Everything you need to know about the world’s first all-electric racing series Die FIA Formel E Meisterschaft basiert auf einer Idee des FIA-Vorsitzenden Jean Todt. The FIA Formula E Championship was the brainchild of FIA President Jean Todt. His vision for creating a championship to showcase the potential of electric vehicles was shared by Alejandro Agag, who established Formula E Holdings to run the series. September 2014 in Peking teil. In under two years it went from concept to reality, with the first race taking place in Beijing on September 14, 2014. For season two, a host of changes have been made to the regulations to make the cars faster, the racing more exciting and the fans more engaged and entertained. Here is your essential guide to Formula E. THE CARS The chassis are the same as season one. They were built by Italian racing car specialists Dallara and are made of a carbon fibre/aluminium honeycomb composite. They have been crash-tested to the same stringent standards as Formula 1. Each of the nine teams has four cars. The bodywork, wings and suspension are produced by a French company called SPARK, which was established especially for Formula E. For season two, the teams are allowed to produce their own rear suspension. The settings need to be the same on both sides and the wheelbase has to be the same as in season one. The large fairings on the front wing are designed to minimise the wind resistance caused by the front wheels, while the two large fins that protrude from the side of the chassis are part of the crash structure and offer no aerodynamic benefit. Another change for this season is that the teams are free to choose their own wheel supplier. The wheels have to comply with minimum and maximum dimensions and are still 18-inch, but the freedom of supplier means the teams can seek solutions that improve brake cooling or help to save weight. The brakes themselves have been changed too, with the compound of the pads and discs altered to improve braking performance. 2016 FIA Formula E BMW i Berlin ePrix | 9 New tech adds extra edge Set-up adjustments to find balance Did you know? The car makes noise of around 80db This is about the same as a standard road car at 70mph. Schon gewusst? Der Geräuschpegel der Autos ist ca. 80db. Batteries produce 200kw 12 | ABOUT FORMULA E ENTERTAINMENT Formula E is unique in sport in that it allows the fans to have a say in influencing the result. This is through FanBoost. For season two this has been refined. And you can now vote for your favourite driver DURING the race. Voting closes six minutes into the race. This means the three winners will have an extra boost only on their second cars. Fans can vote via the official Formula E website and app or via Twitter and Instagram using the #FanBoost hashtag. Away from the race track, Formula E fans are entertained by EJ. This mysterious helmeted figure keeps a party atmosphere going with bespoke tunes. EJ can be found in the eVillage, where he’s based on the podium, which is where you will also find the drivers as they spray the victory champagne and collect their trophies. In the eVillage fans can find a host of fun activities. At every race all 18 drivers make an appearance at the autograph session, while our partners use the space to showcase their sustainable technology through fun, interactive games. It’s also where you can buy official merchandise. 2016 FIA Formula E BMW i Berlin ePrix | 15 RULES Formula E is not only unique in that the cars are all-electric, it’s also different in the fact that all the action takes place over just one day. PRACTICE ÜBUNG There are two practice sessions. These are an opportunity for the teams and drivers to refine the set-up of their cars. This typically involves the tyre pressures, the ride height and the rebound rates of the springs. Electric cars need to be as efficient as possible, so the cars run much less severe wings angles than you would normally see on street tracks. The drivers are able to do one 200kw qualifying simulation lap per session. QUALIFYING The 18 drivers are divided into two groups of four and two groups of five by means of a lottery. Each group has six minutes during which they have to complete an out-lap, a warm-up lap at 170kw and a 200kw qualifying lap. The overall five fastest drivers then progress to the Super Pole shoot-out – a new addition for season two. In this 15-minute session the drivers go out one-by-one starting with the person who set the fifth fastest time and ending with the driver who was fastest. When one driver crosses the line to start his 200kw lap, the next driver is sent out. The order from Super Pole decides the order for the top five places on the grid, with spots 6-20 made up of the order from the group stages. RACE Formula E races begin with a standing start, with the cars getting underway once five red lights have been illuminated and then turned out. The races typically last around 50 minutes. Mid-way through the drivers are required to change cars. The reason for the car swap is that current battery technology does not allow for cars to be driven at racing speeds for more than around 25 minutes. It is the aim of Formula E to advance battery technology to the extent that this system is redundant in season five. During the pitstop the driver comes into the pits, stops in his garage and unbuckles his safety belts and leaves the car. He then sprints across the pit box and jumps into the second car. When he has been safely strapped in he is allowed to leave. A minimum pitstop time is mandated at each race to ensure that the teams have sufficient time to correctly and safety strap in their driver. Earlier in the week the cool Parisian mornings had transformed to beautiful spring days as the sun cut through the clouds and smog. But as the fans gathered to watch electric racing cars to battle, the ultimate solar power fought a losing battle with the other elements, and the inaugural Visa Paris ePrix was to be a chilly one. This would have a profound effect on the race. With low ambient temperatures, the temporary track surface struggled to warm up and as a result the drivers struggled for grip and traction on the fast, technical course. Normally, when the chips are down, the Renault e.dams package comes to the fore, but with no heat in their tyres, Sebastien Buemi and Nico Prost were struggling. And for once the additional weight of the twin motors was paying off and the NEXTEV and DS Virgin Racing cars in particular, were right at the sharp end. From pole position Sam Bird made a slow start, which allowed Lucas di Grassi to slot his Abt Schaeffler car into the lead and also allowed the sister DS Virgin car of Jean-Eric Vergne to force his way into second. This 2016 FIA Formula E BMW i Berlin ePrix | 43 set the tone for the race. Bird appeared faster than Vergne, but couldn’t get quite close enough to make the move stick, although he was close enough for a couple of wheel-banging moments! This allowed di Grassi to concentrate on building his lead, which he did in style. From eighth on the grid Buemi was the man on the move, finding overtaking places the others couldn’t as his tyres warmed and the performance of old returned. He pressured Bird into a small mistake to take third and was closing on Vergne when Team Aguri debutant Ma Qing Hua smashed into the wall at the first corner. With only five laps remaining the race unfortunately finished behind the Qualcomm safety car, not that di Grassi – who extended his championship lead to 11 points with victory – was complaining. “It may well have looked easy from the outside, but it certainly wasn’t from inside the cockpit: in the low temperatures it was difficult to get the tyres and brakes up to temperature – as we saw from the large number of mistakes and slides throughout the day. Now we come to the team’s home race in Berlin as leaders.” ADVERTISING FEATURE | 45 DHL AND FORMULA E DELIVERING AN ELECTRIC FUTURE DHL is delighted to once again be managing Formula E’s ‘race behind the race’ in its second year, delivering the cars and equipment more than 50,000 kilometres across ten iconic cities. To support Formula E’s vision of a sustainable future, we are using the most efficient transportation options available while ensuring the championship schedule runs to plan and the teams can concentrate on their racing. Together with Formula E and other partners, we have also showcased the power of the championship to inspire change off the track with the Formula E eStory platform, a business program which highlights the innovations generated and tested during the first season and which will support further innovation in the future. The first season of the FIA Formula E Championship provided plenty of inspiration and the second season has already brought more excitement. The race action has captured the imagination of audiences around the world and already showed the advances that can be made in the performance of electric vehicles. We’re delighted to be a part of this electric story again this season, and we can’t wait to see the sparks fly once again on the streets of Berlin! 48 | TRACK GUIDE TRACK GUIDE Situated in the centre of Berlin, winding around Strausberger Platz and towards Alexanderplatz, the location for the Berlin ePrix ticks all the boxes. It’s very important for the series and of course for us as a team, and for me as a driver. When you’re on a street circuit and it’s getting slippery and raining, it’s really a challenge because you still need to find the limit somehow, but if you go over the top you’re going to go into the wall. I think for drivers if it’s raining on a street circuit, especially as most of the time there’s little grip, it can get very, very tricky. Chief among these is KarlMarx-Allee, which is where the pits and paddock are located. Named after the philosopher, economist and revolutionary socialist, KarlMarx-Allee was built by the German Democratic Republic (the old East Germany communist state) between 1952 and 1960, although it was known as Stalinallee in the pre-unification era. a million people a year, making it one of the city’s biggest tourist attractions. Two lifts take visitors up in around 40 seconds. For those feeling energetic there is also a 968-step staircase! Alexanderplatz – or Alex to the locals – was originally a cattle market. In the 1920s it was the most fashionable night spot in the city, which made it the subject of numerous films and the pioneering Berlin Alexanderplatz novel. These days the world clock, which tells the time in all the world’s time zones, is its principal attraction, although the whole area of the Berlin ePrix is renowned for cafes and restaurants. Home to the splendid International Cinema, the boulevard was the scene of a worker uprising in 1953 that cost the lives of at least 125 protesters as the government sent in tanks and troops to quell the dissent. The size and scale of the buildings make it a stunning and imposing site. This is epitomised by the Frankfurter Tor – a pair of towers in a square where Karl-MarxAllee intersects with Frankfurter Allee. Another former GDR construction dominates the skyline in the opposite direction. This is the Fernsehturm, a 368-metre TV tower that was completed in 1969 and is situated next to Alexanderplatz. It has a controversial history as its construction came at the expense of many medieval buildings. Despite this, the viewing platform and Telecafe rotating restaurant are visited by over Last year’s Berlin ePRIX was staged at the historic Tempelhof 2016 FIA Formula E BMW i Berlin ePrix | 55 Am Samstag wird Berlin zur ersten Stadt werden, die den ePrix auf zwei verschiedenen Kursen gehalten hat. 56 | FAN SITE DIARY: FRANCE FAN SITE DIARY: FRANCE We are Victor and Maxime, and we’re part of the team that runs the Formula E France Fan Site. We are both big fans of motorsport and like many motorsport enthusiasts in France, we were very excited to go to the first Visa Paris ePrix because it was the first ever motor race in Les Invalides and the first major race in France for many years. Formula E were kind enough to give us a media pass, so on Friday morning we spent time on the track and in the paddock. It was great to see many locals stopping in their cars to take pictures of the Formula E cars that were on display! Later we attended the pre-race press conference featuring Alejandro Agag and Jean Todt. This was very inspiring as they spoke about the future of Formula E and where the series would go in the future. I hope that the race in Paris continues to be part of this. After the driver press conference, we had the opportunity to interview JeanEric Vergne for our Fan Site, which was a great experience. He was very relaxed ahead of his home race and he was clearly excited to race in front of his home fans. Race day itself was very cold and not ideal weather for April. For FP1, we walked around the track to see what the views were like at different parts of the circuit. It was our first opportunity to see Formula E cars on track and we were both very impressed to see how quick they were! It was thrilling to see how close the drivers were getting to the walls. For qualifying, Maxime went to the media centre whereas I stayed at the final turn, which was a fast right hander. The view from here was spectacular and the fans could see the cars get right up close to the wall. When we realised that the race was going to finish under the safety car, we made our way to the podium. The podium ceremony was just fantastic and it was great to see such a loud response from the crowd when the drivers turned up! It was an incredible weekend for us in the beautiful city of Paris and we both hope that Formula E will come back to Paris for many years. We are now more motivated than ever to create a strong following of French Formula E fans. 58 | OUR PARTNERS The FIA Formula E Championship is delighted to have been able to join forces with some world-leading companies in their field.
