Many call it the Island of Dunes or
the Island of Morna, but it could also
be called the island of “a thousand
islanders,” since it is surrounded
by small islets that enchant us with
their beautiful natural landscapes.
The island has about 55 km of clear
sand and turquoise waters and it is
the closest island to the African continent. The search of this island is
motivated by the great moments of
leisure in the warm and fascinating

the village of Sal Rei to the village of
Rabil (at the price of CVE 100$00);
the schedules are not reliable as far
as transport to Sal Rei from/to the
airport; as far as the furthest destinies are concerned, the buses leave Sal Rei right after lunchtime and
only return by nest day, early in
the morning, that is at about 07.00
a.m.. Taxis can be hired in Sal Rei
to get to Rabil at the fare of CVE
500$00, to the fantastic beach of
Santa Mónica for CVE 5,000$00, to
Praia de Chaves, a smallest but very
pleasant beach, at CVE 2,500$00,
a trip around the island, driving by

HISTORY
GESCHICHTE
Due to its geological and climatic characteristics, the island of Boa Vista –
similar to the island of Sal –, after its
discovery on May 14 of 1460, had
been left to oblivion for 150 years – ,
and it was only used for herbage for
cattle. Cristovão Colombo (Columbus), the Portuguese navigator, shored the island in 1498 and made a
terrific description of the difficulties
that he found there.
In the meantime, the course of time
of the island of was marked by successive wreckages, resulting from the
conjugation of peculiar circumstance,
such as stormy winds associated to
strong ocean currents, rocky reefs
close to the surface extending the
plain coast, wrapped in foggy, with
very limited visibility.
Around the year of 1620, some English
navigators, noticing the good quality of
salt found in the island, decided to establish in Povoação Velha in order to
economically exploit this natural resource. Nevertheless, the frequent attacks of the pirates did not allow for the
regular economic development of the
island, until 1820, a date during which a
devastating pillaging by the pirates took
place, forcing the local population to
move to Porto Inglês (presently called
Sal Rei) and to build a fortress in the islet that faces it.From then on, the island
of Boa Vista prospered relatively well
and gained some cultural importance in
such a way that Morna, the emblematic
musical style of Cape Verde, was born
in this island. Nowadays, the industry
of tourism is developing, but the tourist and road infrastructures available
aren’t still sufficient to allow the island
to exploit its immense natural richness.
Boa Vista has one of the lowest population densities in the country, with only
5.000 inhabitants.
Aufgrund ihrer geologischen und klimatischen Eigenschaften ist die Insel
Boa Vista – ähnlich wie die Insel Sal
–, nach ihrer Entdeckung am 14. Mai
1460 für die folgenden 150 Jahre in
Vergessenheit geraten und wurde

Colombo (Columbus), der portugiesische Seefahrer, betrat die Insel 1498

Ansonsten wurde die Insel in der

der Oberfläche, die im Nebel nah an
der fast unsichtbaren Küste lagen.
Um das Jahr 1620 bemerkten die
englischen Seefahrer die gute Qualität des auf der Insel gefundenen Salz
und beschlossen die Siedlung Povoação Velha zu gründen, um diese
natürliche Recource auszubeuten.
Trotzdem, die häufigen Piratenangriffe haben eine wirtschaftliche Entwicklung der Insel nicht zugelassen, bis
zum Jahre 1820 als die Bevölkerung
nach einer verheerenden Plünderung gezwungen war nach Porto Inglês (heute Sal Rei) umzuziehen und
dort ein Fort auf der vorgelagerten
Insel gebaut hat. Ab diesem Zeitpunkt gedieh die Insel Boa Vista gut
und gewann an kultureller Bedeutung wie die Morna, der symbolische
Musikstil von Kap Verde, der hier
entstanden ist.
Heutzutage ist die Tourismusindustrie in ihrer Wachstumsphase, aber
die vorhandene Infrastruktur erlaubt
es noch nicht, den enormen Naturreichtum der Insel auszunutzen. Boa
Vista hat die geringste Bevölkerungsdichte des Landes mit nur 5000
Einwohnern.

walk to praia de Chaves, and then to
the sandy strands of dunes, through
praia do Estoril and the oasis of date

beautiful. Ribeira de Rabil, a lagoon,
is located nearby praia de Chaves.

Wir empfehlen Ihnen einen Spaziergang am Strand praia de Chaves,
und dann zu den Dünen, den Strand
von Estoril und die Oase voller Dattelpalmen, die die welligen Dünen
noch schöner machen. Nah bei dem
Strand von Chaves liegt das Tal von
Rabil, ein kleiner See.

The nostalgic charm of the places that
time has conquered and led to sleep.
The history of Boa Vista started in this
place, back in the 1600’s. Going down
to the coast, you’ll find an extension of
marvelous beaches, such as praia de
Santa Mónica – one of the best beaches of Cape Verde - , Curralinho,
and a bit to the South, the beaches of
Lacação and Curral Velho. The access
to the last two beaches is difficult, so
we recommend the use of an off-road
vehicle to get there. The islet of Curral Velho can be glimpsed at from the
beach with the same name, where
is the habitat of the albatross (Southa
leucogaster), the sea birds in extinction,
as well as Rabil (fregata magnificens), a
very rare bird that produces offspring
only in the islets of Cape Verde.

geblieben. Hier begann die Geschichte der Insel im 16. Jahrhundert. An der Küste erstrecken sich
die wunderbaren Strände wie der
Strand von Santa Mónica – einer

Lacação und Curral Velho. Der Zugang zu den letzten beiden Stränden ist schwierig und wir empfehlen
einen Geländewagen, um dort hin
zu kommen. Das Inselchen Curare
Velho kann von dem gleichnamigen
Strand aus gesehen werden, sie ist
der Lebensraum des Albatros (Southa leucogaster), eine vom Aussterben bedrohte Art der Seevogel,
genau wie der Rabil (fregata magnificens), eine sehr seltene Vogelart,
die nur auf den Inselchen von Kap
Verde brütet.

Boa Vista is naturally predisposed to
ecotourism, with its beaches receiving loggerhead turtles during their
deposition, or its protected bays that
are a refuge for the humpback whales that come here to breed in winter
also. With very shallow water, ideal
for the development of four different
species of corals, as well as feeding
areas for sharks and turtles of various
species, Boavista is an island on rocky
areas that are home to several species of birds, as well as to migratory
birds (endemic).
Boa Vista ist natürlich geeignet für
Ökotourismus, mit seinen Stränden,
an denen die Karettschildkröten ihre
Eier ablegen, oder ihren geschützten
Buchten, in denen sich im Winter die
Buckelwale paaren. Mit sehr flachem
Wasser, ideal für die Entwicklung
von vier verschiedenen Korallenarten, wie auch Futterplätzen für
verschiedene Arten von Haien und
Schildkröten. Boa Vista ist eine Insel
mit felsigem Gebiet, die die Heimat
verschiedener Vogelarten sowie endemischer Vögel ist.
