What is the impact of a specific kind of „Target-Orientated-Hunting“? “The Hatzfeldt-Project” Which impacts of „Target-Orientated-Hunting“ to the habitats and hunting regime are to consider? What are (potential) hazards (pests)? Forest damage are influences of potential damage factors which affect the legitimate objectives of forest owners or of higher interests of the society. Identification of influences as damage requires the determination, publication and description of owners targets with (as possible) measurable parameters. Control of damage factors would be necessary when the supposed damage could be higher than an owner described level ( one task for hunting). Nogent-sur-Vernisson, 08.07.2014 Prof. Dr. Michael Müller: Target-Orientated-Hunting Folie 9 Free decision of forest owners No damage! Nogent-sur-Vernisson, 08.07.2014 Prof. Dr. Michael Müller: Target-Orientated-Hunting Folie 10 Critical damage Nogent-sur-Vernisson, 08.07.2014 Prof. Dr. Michael Müller: Target-Orientated-Hunting Folie 11 Conclusion I: Forest management has reached a high level of diversification. There are many tools and strategies in management of the plant populations in forests which consider this diversification. In the opposite the management of game is characterised by a high level of unification and a low level of scientific content and losses in continuous adaption of rules and laws. A divers forest management needs divers hunting systems too. Nogent-sur-Vernisson, 08.07.2014 Prof. Dr. Michael Müller: Target-Orientated-Hunting Folie 12 Game is a very important compartment of our forest ecosystems but the same argument is true for bark beetles, defoliators, mice, fungi's and other potential damage factors too. In Germany ungulates probably cause more damages than all the other biotic damage factors together! Why we are manage than the ungulates in another way? Why we are hunting and hunting with guns? What is the special situation in the case of ungulates? Nogent-sur-Vernisson, 08.07.2014 Prof. Dr. Michael Müller: Target-Orientated-Hunting Folie 13 The answer: „It is prey!“ ( the other task of hunting) In opposite to all the other potential biotic damage factors – game and especially ungulates are not only potential damage factors – they are in the same time natural and sustainable recourses in which humans identify own targets. Nogent-sur-Vernisson, 08.07.2014 Prof. Dr. Michael Müller: Target-Orientated-Hunting Folie 14 There are different forms of “prey”. Game is a natural and sustainable resource we want to use. Therefore we hunt with guns. The majority of hunters identify hunting in the first line as an instrument of silviculture. In addition hunters are interested in hunting as a form of hobby and the possibility for recreation. Forest owners would tolerate losses in earing for a better help in silviculture by hunting. Trophies are only a priority target of a low number of hunters. That means the frame conditions for good agreements between forest owners and hunters are given in the most cases. Nogent-sur-Vernisson, 08.07.2014 Prof. Dr. Michael Müller: Target-Orientated-Hunting Folie 17 The legitimate frame conditions from society: - health, divers and habitat adapted game populations - low stress in grow up seasons of young animals and in times with a low amount of food (winter) - no hunting of adults with depended young animals (§22 Abs. 4 BJagdG) - (prey, adventures, recreation, trophies, earn) ??? Nogent-sur-Vernisson, 08.07.2014 Prof. Dr. Michael Müller: Target-Orientated-Hunting Folie 43 Conclusion III In reo deer and wild boars we need no planning or only minimum-planning in all age-classes. Minimum-planning in the younger age-classes of all other wild ungulates Full synchronisation of shooting seasons under consideration of animal protection (§ 22 BJG) Attractive agreements and incentives between forest owners and hunters Continuous education of forest owners and hunters Shoot training for hunters Nogent-sur-Vernisson, 08.07.2014 Prof. Dr. Michael Müller: Target-Orientated-Hunting Folie 44 • Shorter shooting seasons but no losses in hunting success and silviculture targets • Animal protection without problems • More effective hunting • All population structures in optimum • Promotion of impacts in classes of younger animals • More efficient hunting • Lower impacts (disruption) by hunting in sensitive periods • There are some more similar proposals (WÖLFEL ET AL. (2001), HESPELER (2009)). • There are changed hunting laws in some German federal states and that process continuous.
