How did the Scottish wars of Independence (1286-1328) form a national identity? •Comment on les guerres d’indépendence formées l’identité Écossaise? William Wallace • Scotland was a broken country & much of Scottish nobility was locked up, forced to submit to the evil King Edward I. • They were forced to stand against France – which we know were allies with Scotland in 1295. • Williams Wallace gained supporters from the South and then the North and soon Scotland was a fully fighting nation desperate for liberation. • On the 11th of September there was a battle between the English & Scottish called the Battle Of Stirling Bridge where 5000 English were killed. • The English treasurer – who had put so much pressure on the Scottish people- was skinned and worn around Wallace’s waist to support his belt. ‘Commander of the Army of the Kingdom of Scotland’ • William Wallace was given the title “Guardian of the Scots” • John Balliol was the king at this time and he was called “The Puppet King” • Wallace took the War into England, carrying out the terrorist attacks Et Le Pont De Stirling! Robert The Bruce • Robert I, known as Robert the Bruce, was the king of the Scots who secured Scotland's independence from England • Wallace stood up and fought, supported greatly by Bruce. • Bruce became the guardian of Scotland. Robert The Bruce • Bruce followed in the footsteps and the English army was killed at Bannockburn. • Bruce saw also “The Auld Alliance” the alliance which declared that if France was to be invaded by Edward’s army, the Scots would come to its rescue. • Finally in 1327, when Edward’s son took the throne there was peace between the two neighbours Une P’tite histoire bete Eine kliene Geschichte Robert le Bruce était un homme courageux et un vrai roi. O flower of Scotland When will we see your like again That fought and died for Your wee bit hill and glen And stood against him Proud Edward's army And sent him homeward Tae think again The hills are bare now And autumn leaves lie thick and still O'er land that is lost now Which those so dearly held And stood against him Proud Edward's army And sent him homeward Tae think again Those days are passed now And in the past they must remain But we can still rise now And be the nation again That stood against him Proud Edward's army And sent him homeward Tae think again The Lasting Impact
