Newsletter Nr. 5 - 2015 February / Februar / Февраль Another new 1:43 model from Russia Now that trucks have become quite popular in 1:43 scale, the Ukrainian VECTOR comes out with the model of the Mercedes LG315/46 4x4, in the first production version with all-steel cab, which Daimler-Benz delivered between 1956 and 1958. Following official tender, this truck was ordered by the then new Ministry of Defense in addition to the 630 MAN 4x4, both as the first generation equipment for the then newly created German Bundeswehr. From 1958, until the end of the production in 1964, there were changes made to the LG315, the most visible ones being a standardized open standard cabin with folding fabric top and standardized fenders, the cabins and fenders corresponding now to those of the MAN 630 L2A / L2AE and of the Magirus-Deutz Jupiter 6x6 trucks of the Bundeswehr. However, there was also a very small number of an “in-between” version, where the LG315 / 46 was already equipped with the standard cabin, but still had the "old" curved fenders. Overall, Daimler-Benz delivered about 6,600 of these 4x4 trucks. The vast majority of them went to the German Army as tarp covered platform trucks. Just for information, it should be mentioned that MAN on their part supplied the German army approximately with 20,000 units of their 630, nicknamed "Emma" (the multi-fuel engine of which incidentally could even run on old french-fries oil, if it had to be!). The pre-production sample of the LG315/46 photographed here looks quite promising. VECTOR apparently will produce the model as a platform truck in the Bundeswehr colours, in the blue THW (Technisches Hilfswerk) colour, and – believe it or not – in a white UN-version, although this particular truck never was in use with the UN! I understand that later on, VECTOR will release the LG315 as a fire truck, and in the second version, i.e. with the standardised open cabin and angular fenders. The model can be ordered from pb-scalemodels ([email protected]), in Seattle, WA. The price will be around 250 USD (+ S&H). Now that the price of crude has drastically fallen, he suggests on the forum that the model prices should follow suit, in tandem as well.... I can only applaud wholeheartedly his suggestion, but how does the old saying go again: Hope dies last?!
