Dois séculos movimentados Denis Russo Burgierman campo countryside Two busy centuries Denis Russo Burgierman There’s one thing no one can deny : the century that is over was a busy one. Some might say they have been the 100 most productive years in the history of man on earth. Others will assert the opposite: that was the most destructive period of all times. And there is truth in both statements. If we come back 100 years into the past until 1914, we would find in a suburb on north of Detroit a factory called Ford, putting to work for the first time an invention of the last year: the assembly line. Across from the Atlantic, in a German town on the edge of the Rhine called Ludwigshafen , another factory, called Basf, began to produce ammonia industrially. These two inventions of 1913, that started to be reproduced in Uma coisa ninguém há de negar: este que passou foi um século movimentado. Do outro lado do Atlântico, numa cidadezinha alemã à beira do Rio Reno chamada Ludwigshafen, outra fábrica, essa chamada Basf, começava a produzir amônia industrialmente. Ninguém nega a importância dessas duas descobertas. Diante desses ganhos enormes, as perdas A Quinta Estação The Fifth Season mass from 1914, would put the world in the era of scale. The process developed by Ford would increase in extraordinary ways the productivity of the mankind. The fertilizer developed by Carl Bosch at BASF would serve as the basis for the phenomenon that decades later would be known as the Green Revolution - the industrialization of agricultural production. No one denies the importance of these two discoveries. Thanks to them, the human population jumped from just under 2 billion people in 1914 to over 7 billion today – such a mammoth increase which is even difficult to conceive. Never before has mankind lived so long, learned so much, produced so much, consumed so much, accumulated so much. But this impressive gain of scale had consequences and the selection of films for the 3rd Ecofalante Environmental Film Festival brings a lot of examples of this: some of them more poetic, others more political, some of them fictional and others painfully real. Basically every large complex cycles in which our existence relies over have been broken: the water, the nutrients, the climate. The perplexity of breaking these cycles is the subject of the surreal Belgian Fiction Fifth Season, in which the spring simply ceases to arrive when the winter ends. The seeds do not germinate, the bees disappear, the cows do not produce milk – making the mankind unfeasible. According to the science of complexity, all that is complex has necessarily two characteristics : scale and complexity. But there is a prank there. When investing in scale, microscópicas de complexidade pareciam irrelevantes. Dos filmes da mostra, o belo Sinfonia do Solo (Simphony of the Soil) fala explicitamente disso. In the busy century that has finished, mankind has invested all the chips in scale. The result was an imbalance that led to a collapse of complexity. complexity is affected and vice versa. There is a trade-off between these two things. In the busy century that has finished, mankind has invested all the chips in scale. The result was an imbalance that led to a collapse of complexity. We spent decades celebrating productivity increases of 200%, 500%, 1,000%. Given these huge gains, microscopic losses of complexity seemed irrelevant. But they have been accumulating for 100 years and today just looking around it is possible to realize the size of the problem. Floods, cancer, pollution, wars, hurricanes, madness, landslides, strokes, obesity, malnutrition, degenerative diseases, congestion, loss of sense in everything. Regarding the Environmental Film Festival, the beautiful movie – Symphony of the Soil – talks clearly about it. The documentary patiently reveals the incredible complexity of the Earth’s soil, according to the movie “the interface between geology and biology” since that’s how the minerals of the earth become the nutrients that makes life on the planet possible. And this incredibly multifaceted richness contrasts to the monotony of industrial agricultural production, which for half a century converts complexity into scale . Another look at the same issue is the movie Farmer’s Blues, a portrait of an endangered species in Europe : the small farmer, replaced in worldwide scale by industrial and financial economy. If the century that is closing in 2014 was focused in scale, the next one is supposed to be in complexity, so that our systems can go back campo countryside 15 It is not a great invention of scale that will save us – it will be millions of small complex inventions that will redeem the diversity lost in the world. que se apresenta serão milhares de indivíduos autônomos, nós de rede, encontrando soluções locais para problemas locais. Luckily, the fundamental technology to make this possible already exists : the networking among all the inhabitants of the earth. Scale is produced in hierarchies , such as those that prevailed at Ford and BASF. But complexity arises only when there are a lot of individuals connected in a network, something that is only possible now. If the protagonists of the past century were great leaders of industry like Henry Ford and Carl Bosch, masters of hierarchies, the protagonists of the century now are thousands of autonomous individuals, network nodes, finding local solutions to local problems. If we want to come back to live in a balanced world, the next century will have to be at least as busy as now - maybe more. It is not a great invention of scale that will save us – it will be millions of small complex inventions that will redeem the diversity lost in the world. The Ecofalante Film Festival this year does not have the solution for all our problems, but brings dozens of small redemptive stories spread over their films. Our hope is in the accumulation of more and more stories like these O Homem Vaca The Moo Men Reino Unido, 2013, 98’ DIREÇÃO DIRECTOR Andy Heathcote, Heike Bachelier PRODUÇÃO PRODUCER Andy Heathcote, Heike Bachelier FOTOGRAFIA CINEMATOGRAPHER Andy Heathcote EDIÇÃO EDITOR O leiteiro Stephen Hook decide ignorar os supermercados e vender diretamente a seus clientes seu leite orgânico.
