La Toscane est une région aux contrastes inattendus.
C'est une terre qui a pris la forme escarpée et verticale
des Alpes Apuanes avec ses aiguilles de marbre dont
le profil semble lancer un défi aux intempéries ;
comment ne pas être hypnotisés par cette blancheur
luisante, en suivant du regard les lignes des schistes,
ou en le laissant glisser le long du gris foncé des
surfaces altérées. Mais elle est aussi capable de
donner le vertige, avec ses paysages aux accents
dramatiques comme ceux qui sont ponctués par les
Escarpements aux alentours de Volterra, aussi
fabuleux que dangereux ; le calcaire gréseux teinté
de gris - que parcourent des mouvements
superposant sables et argiles - se fend, depuis des
siècles, en des gouffres abrupts pour connaître
ensuite la gloire d'édifier des châteaux, des murs
d'enceinte, des églises et des villes. De là, cette
région nous attire brusquement dans l'imbroglio de
l'épouvantable dédale des Collines Métallifères
veiné de lames de terre rouge vermeil venue
d'ailleurs, ce grès calcaire est tavelé de bouffés de
vapeur couleur perle, peint et éclairé de
jaillissements sulfureux. La Toscane prie ensuite
l'instant de se retenir, le temps de franchir les
montées et les descentes des Crêtes siennoises fossiles desséchés après le retrait d'une mer autrefois
bien vivante - où un blanc cendré s'estompe en des
vagues de terre raréfiée l'été et lourde en hiver,
obligeant fermes et cyprès à peindre le fond du
tableau, voire à flotter comme suspendus à l'horizon.

Städten erhoben zu werden.

It is a land which takes the harsh, vertical shape of the
Apuan Alps with its marble gullies which seem to
challenge the bad weather; one cannot but be
hypnotised by that shining whiteness, gazing at the
tracks made by skiers or glancing over the uneven
leaden surfaces. The altitude of dramatic
landscapes such as those featuring the spectacular
and periclitate Balze around Volterra create a
sensation of vertigo; the grey stone bench - crossed
by overlapping currents of sand and clay - cleaves,
as it has for centuries, into rugged chasms before
rising up to form castles, walls, churches and towns.
From here it quickly attempts to blend into the
“Dantesque” maze of the Metalliferous Hills;
variegated by alien blades of vermilion earth,
speckled with puffs of pearly steam, painted and lit
up by sulphurous jets. Then it calls out to stop time
on the ups and downs of the Sienese Crete - fossils
parched by the withdrawal of an ancient sea - where
ashen white blends into waves of earth, rarefied in
summer and heavy in winter, forcing hamlets and
cypresses to paint a background and almost float, as
though hanging from the horizon. It’s like a small
world, an island on solid ground; Tuscany by
CERDOMUS has translated its treasures for us.
