Reception / Opening
Ladies and Gentlemen,
Good morning.
Welcome on board of "Schulschiff Deutschland" to VHT's 3rd Training Camp titled:
Schiff, Maschine und Versicherung
Ship, Machinery, Insurance
Following the previous Training Camps which have dealt with grounding, stranding and
consequential salvage as well as collisions we have decided to devote the today's seminar to
"ship, machinery and insurance"

As a starter I have prepared a slide which shows the frequency of hull-, machinery damage
since 2001.

On this slide one very clearly can identify:
1)
2)
3)
The number of insured objects handled by VHT has risen since 2001 but the
increase is stagnating as of 2006 (beige beams).
After a drop in 2005 we see the number of hull damages (blue beams) rising again,
except for 2008 the rise in number appear to correspond with the development of
the number of insured objects.
Machinery damages (red beams) show a different development, although the
number of insured objects is stagnating as of 2006, the number of machinery
claims is increasing.

If one however looks at the development of machinery damages in isolation, then the
following slide has to be considered:

No question, damages to the main engine have the highest frequency.
The following graph shows once again the development of machinery damages handled by
VHT in relation to hull damages over a period of 91/2 years, however on a percentage basis in

Right so, however up to now cost development has not been considered.

Green is the trend of the increase of all hull and machinery objects handled by the VHT, red is
the number of machinery damages and yellow shows the trend of cost development with
machinery damages.
As of 2004 a change is notable, however there is no dramatic change, neither with the number
of hull and machinery objects nor with the number of machinery damages but the costs for
settling machinery damages have clearly risen (yellow) and most remarkably so in 2008.
Insurers and ship owners are likewise not amused.
Where do the causes lie?
Is it the result of lower qualification of technical crewmembers, inadequate technical
inspection by owners and/or the aftermath of a till recent booming shipbuilding market and
the strong demand for ship engines?
Supposedly it is a bit of all, not to forget a booming market combined with strong demand
will not lower but rather increase prices. More often than not the quality of products will
behave inversely proportional in such times.
Seite 5
For us this development was and is important enough to pick it up as a central theme.
We would like to explain to you the emergence of the today's machinery damage insurance
cover according to ADS (General German Marine Insurance conditions) and the DTV clauses.
This item of the program will be dealt with by Mr. H.C. Enge of Messrs. Lampe & Schwartze
and/or Dr. D. Schwampe of Messrs. Dabelstein & Passehl subject to availability. Messrs.
Lampe & Schwartze leads most of the Hull and Machinery policies in the Bremen market and
has substantial experience in this segment of marine insurance, and as you will know,
Dabelstein & Passehl is one of the leading law firms dealing with marine insurance.
Thereafter Dipl.-Ing K. Wetzel will tell us about the classical engine damage, damages
caused by wear and tear, and damages caused by latent defect.
Has a damage occurred, a proper damage assessment in accordance with the policy conditions
is required and how this is done is the topic of Capt. D. Brand's lecture.
Once an insured damage has been surveyed, assessed and repaired, settlement with
underwriters is due. Dipl. - Ing. B. Röder will explain to us the standing orders for certifying
damage-related costs under consideration of standard policy conditions.
Concluding we will hear a lecture by our Dipl.-Ing.'s H. Förster and H. Jentz in respect of
loss prevention. Especially he will try to incorporate technical expertise and experience made
by VHT in his statement
I do hope, we have succeeded in putting together an informative and interesting program for
today.
.
The seminar
Ship, Machinery, Insurance
continues the series of VHT's skill enhancement activities which are aiming at passing on
knowledge and experience of VHT employees to our customers. It is our intention to offer an
opportunity to seafarers, shore personnel and other interested parties to participate in
experience gained by the VHT in the claim handling process.
He who understands the interconnection of the various topics in such a scenario will be able
to act in a proper manner and to realise borderlines.
A competent judgement is a precondition for an appropriate organisation of a problem solving
scenario by employing all available resources.
