Mischa Jovanovic «My greatest wish is to paint a picture so large that you can live in it.» Mischa Jovanovic Thanks to Dragan, Vasa and Jelena Jovanovic, Daniel and Ralf Fitze, Manuel Tondo, Jorge Chaves, Nicole Kuentz, Udo Rieger, Urs and Eveline Willimann, Marion Albisser, Claudia Wilden, Daniel Knöpfli, Vassilios Coltoucis, Peter and Rita Kuentz, Ronnie Stadelmann, Martin Huber, Hubert Rütsche, Peter Stüssi, Fabian Jäggi, Stefano Lancini, Barbara Capobianco, René Stupf, Andreas Bichsel, Christian Vazquez, Adrian, Miriam, Heinz, Marc, Nicole, Gert, Sebastian, Franc, Pet, Urs, Mägs, Fränzi, Branko, Annette... Mischa Jovanovic 1970 geboren in Belgrad, Yugoslawien (22. Mischa Jovanovic painted his first pictures in his father’s garage between 1986 and 1990. His use of colours in his early works is unrestrained and gives the impression of a certain anxiety and naivety. It seems unimportant to him to regulate the colours and his style of painting appears somewhat uncertain. His increasing experience with the art of painting and with the masters starts to instil him with more confidence, and this was to become discernible in his later works. Grosse Formate geben ihm die Möglichkeit alles einzubinden, was ihm wichtig erscheint. The first pictures with their own character emerge in 1990 and more definite themes come into play. An understanding and a grasp of colours indicate a more relaxed attitude and his subsequent works are very much influenced by the 20th Century American painters. Moving from his father’s garage to his own studio in Flawil finally allows him the opportunity to reproduce his ideas on a larger canvas and big formats give him the confidence to integrate everything that he feels is important. There is a clear development in his work between 1994 and 1999. Various aspects are applied as motifs – motifs which do not, however, differ from the underlying structure of the flow of colours, but which now appear more controlled and more sincere. Some themes during this period still occupy Mischa Jovanovic right up to the present day, including the meeting of good and evil, of positive and negative and of love and hate. Although this leaves the impression that they recur as ongoing themes of his work, they are nevertheless represented from a different perspective each time. After 2000 his pictures are no longer named and he simply calls them “22”, which is a little unsettling at first. Is the namelessness a separation from concrete ideas or does it simply represent the freedom which Mischa Jovanovic grants himself? 1 die seele/the soul 40 x 40cm / acryl & oil on linen 2 das leuten/the ringing 2,0 x 1,6m / acryl & oil on linen 3 positive kraft/positive power 2,0 x 1,8m / acryl, gypsum & oil on linen 4 vulkan/vulcano 2,0 x 2,2m / acryl & oil on linen 5 im lauf der zeit/in the course of time 2,1 x 1,8m / acryl, gypsum & oil on linen 6 blutendes auge/bleeding eye 1,4 x 1,4m / acryl, gypsum & oil on linen 7 weinen/crying 2,0 x 1,2m / acryl & oil on linen 8 der balkan blutet 1989/balkan is bleeding 1989 2,0 x 1,6m / acryl & oil on linen 9 gedanken des alleinseins/thoughts of loneliness 1,7 x 2,0m / acryl & oil on linen 10 er sieht uns/he’s watching us 1,8 x 1,4m / acryl & oil on linen 11 der fels/the rock 1,2 x 1,6m / acryl & oil on linen 12 das tor/the gate 3,6 x 1,0m / acryl & oil on linen 13 hoffnung liebe ewigkeit/hope love eternity 2,0 x 2,0m / acryl, gypsum & oil on linen 14 die geburt: vagina/ the birth: vagina 1,2 x 2,2m / acryl & oil on linen 15 der tod/the death 2,0 x 2,4m / acryl & oil on linen 16 schwarze sonne/black sun 2,0 x 2,4m / acryl & oil on linen 17 blaue kraft/blue power 2,0 x 1,7m / acryl & oil on linen 18 steine/stones 2,1 x 1,8m / acryl & oil on linen 19 eingang/entrance 2,2 x 1,6m / acryl, gypsum & oil on linen 20 helle wahrnehmung/bright cognition 1,0 x 1,0m / acryl & oil on linen (part 2) 21 helle wahrnehmung/bright cognition 1,0 x 1,0m / acryl & oil on linen (part 1) 22 die tiefe/deepness 1,2 x 1,8m / acryl on linen 23 auge eins/eye one 40 x 40cm / acryl & oil on linen 24 auge zwei/eye two 40 x 40cm / acryl & oil on linen 25 auge drei/eye three 40 x 40cm / acryl & oil on linen 26 auge vier/eye four 40 x 40cm / acryl & oil on linen 27 luft/air/komposition 1 1,4 x 1,4m / acryl & oil on linen 28 luft/air/komposition 2 1,4 x 1,4m / acryl & oil on linen 29 luft/air/komposition 3 1,4 x 1,4m / acryl & oil on linen 30 erde/earth/komposition 1 1,4 x 1,4m / acryl & oil on linen 31 erde/earth/komposition 2 1,4 x 1,4m / acryl & oil on linen 32 erde/earth/komposition 2 1,4 x 1,4m / acryl & oil on linen 33 feuer/fire/komposition 1 1,4 x 1,4m / acryl & oil on linen 34 feuer/fire/komposition 2 1,4 x 1,4m / acryl & oil on linen 35 feuer/fire/komposition 3 1,4 x 1,4m / acryl & oil on linen 36 wasser/water/komposition 1 1,4 x 1,4m / acryl & oil on linen 37 wasser/water/komposition 2 1,4 x 1,4m / acryl & oil on linen 38 wasser/water/komposition 3 1,4 x 1,4m / acryl & oil on linen 39 22/10 40 x 40cm / acryl & oil on linen 40 22/11 40 x 40cm / acryl & oil on linen 41 22/12 40 x 40cm / acryl & oil on linen 42 22/13 40 x 40cm / acryl & oil on linen 43 22/14 1,4 x 1,4m / acryl, gypsum & oil on linen 44 22/15 1,4 x 1,4m / acryl & oil on linen 45 22/16 1,4 x 1,4m / acryl, gypsum & oil on linen 46 22/17 1,4 x 1,4m / acryl, gypsum & oil on linen 47 22/18 1,4 x 1,4m / acryl & oil on linen 48 22/19 2,0 x 1,6m / acryl & oil on linen 49 22/20 1,6 x 2,0m / acryl & oil on linen 50 22/21 1,6 x 1,6m / acryl & oil on linen 51 22/22 2,0 x 2,0m / acryl & oil on linen 52 22/23 0,8 x 0,8m / acryl & oil on linen (part 1) 53 22/24 0,8 x 0,8m / acryl & oil on linen (part 2) 54 22/25 2,0 x 2,0m / acryl & oil on linen 55 feuerskulptur/firesculpture 1,6m hoch / 0,5m breit / carton, gypsum, acryl & oil 56 wasserskulptur/watersculpture 1,6m hoch / 0,5m breit / carton, gypsum, acryl & oil Werbung versus Kunst Werbung als Abbild des Zeitgeistes kann nicht gegen den Strom der Alltagskultur schwimmen. Advertising versus Art As a reflection of the spirit of time, advertising has to be in step with everyday culture. Art and advertising are different – in the way in which each is viewed and formulated, in their content, their objectives and their assumptions. Each lends new impetus to the other. Art is able to inform advertising and conversely, brand advertising may exert a measure of influence upon artistic projects. Is this observation a snapshot of the 21st Century? It is doubtful that Picasso, Dali and van Gogh shared the same vision. Was it more a case of inspiration and vision that was only recognised by society many years later? It is a form of recognition that I now wish to attribute to a young artist – Mischa Jovanovic – who has the courage to present his inspiration and vision of art unconventionally. Let us hope that society accords him the acknowledgement that he deserves.
