“Our series of work highlights a multi-cultural
clash between religion and popular cultures.
We explore the dominating influence of Western theatrics and those narratives that are
constructed to depict a certain reality. Inspired by Hollywood´s visual language and
tactics, we create our own narratives. Each
photograph reflects us in a battle of moral,
religious and cultural conflicts. Two dominant
personalities appear. East and West with all
their stereotypes. Environments are chosen
as stages on which to perform and define
our behaviours.
Several characters may appear repeatedly.
Our daily uniforms, brands reflecting class
distinctions become tools and opportunities
for acting out multiple personae and adapting to specific surroundings. …. Creating
a moment in time, a dream or something
seen, we tell a story of growing up … As
twin brothers, we have set out to find ourselves in each other, the similarities become
interesting and exciting. Trying to create something new each time, a story unfolds and
never ends.”
Hasan and Husain Essop
Hasan und Husain Essop sind 1985 in Kapstadt, Südafrika geboren. 2006 schlossen sie ihr Kunststudium
mit Schwerpunkt in Druckgrafik und Fotografie an der
Michaelis School of Fine Art der Universität von Kapstadt ab. Seitdem haben sie lokale und internationale
Anerkennung bekommen und stellten in verschiedenen Galerien und auf Kunstfestivals aus: Spier Contemporary 2007, Stellenbosch und Johannesburg Art
Gallery, The Johannesburg Art Fair, Art 39 Basel, 10.
Biennale von Havanna 2009. Die Essop-Brüder werden von der Goodman Gallery in Kapstadt vertreten.

„We all suffer an inner struggle. You have
this split personality within yourself because of the different lifestyles we‘re exposed
to. We were raised by traditional parents,
but the moment one leaves the home you
step into a world full of peer pressure. You
grow up with this inner tension. You have
your Islamic garb when you‘re going to
pray. But when you take that off, you have
your Diesel top underneath, which you
feel more comfortable with.“

Wie jongliert IHR kreativ mit EUREN doppelten und dreifachen Identitäten? Wie können wir mit negativen Stereotypen umgehen
und sie möglicherweise verändern?
An 4 Tagen mit den Künstlern Hasan und
Husain Essop sich selbst oder andere fotografisch inszenieren und Bilder bearbeiten.
Ihr solltet Lust am Fotografieren haben und
euch auf diese Art über euer Leben zwischen
mehreren Stühlen ausdrücken wollen.
