“Willkommen in Berlin!”
Explore Berlin by bike
Regardless if this is your first trip to Berlin or if you already
feel like “ein Berliner,” our bike tours are great ways to see the
city and understand what makes Berlin so special. Here are
just some of the many reasons why:
Fat Tire Bike Tours has been seen in, among others:
TimeOut, Lonely Planet, Rick Steves’, Fodor’s, Condé Nast,
Wanderlust, Discovery Channel, CBS News, and many more.
“The best way to… take in some sightseeing is to rent a
bike and explore alone or with a bike group. Fat Tire Bike
Tours is the best place to rent bikes and meet other cyclists
looking to pedal around the city.“
Berlin is almost 9 times the size of Paris
yet very flat and bike-friendly. Our tours
take advantage of this. We prefer bike
paths, parks, and less-traveled roads.
We stop every
few hundred meters to discuss the sights and take
photos, so our tours aren’t the least bit
strenuous. Why punish your feet walking?
Our expert guides provide fascinating anecdotes to deliver relevant information
you’ll absorb and take with you.
Families welcome! Kids’ bikes,
trailers and seats available.
Have fun, even if it rains! Rain
gear and gloves provided.
We make sure to divide up large groups
for the highest standard of personal service.
We have expert guides and a wide selection
of new bikes.
What’s more, if at the end of the tour
you’re not completely convinced our tours –
and level of service – are the best ways to experience Berlin, the
tour’s on us! That’s our guarantee to you and it’s why you pay after
the tour. Ride with the best!
Ride safely on bike paths and
less-traveled roads.
Enjoy local culture in a beautiful beer garden in the park.
We are proud to be ranked consistently as a top activity by tripadvisor,
with more than 1500 5-Star Reviews.

Why Fat Tire Bike Tours?
We’re committed to your satisfaction
Fat Tire Bike Tours was chosen for the Discovery
Channel’s “5 Takes Europe” Berlin episode. Over the
years companies have sprung up trying to mimic the
Fat Tire Bike Tours experience. Here are just a few of
the reasons why year after year after year we’ve conducted more bike tours for more satisfied customers
than all the rest:
Our focus: Bike tours and bike rentals are our business. As opposed
to using promotional gimmicks or being a side project to walking
tours, we simply focus on what we do best: providing great bike
tours in a great city.
Our freebies: Accepting credit cards, serving up hot tea and providing gloves on cold days, storing your excess luggage, free internet,
paying at the end of the tour only if you’re satisfied… these are all
free norms you’ve come to expect with Fat Tire Bike Tours.
Our commitment: Full-time bike mechanics, insurances, safety
equipment, optional helmets, kids’ bikes, special needs bikes, bike
shops as opposed to open-air storage… while others skimp based
on costs, we are a fully licensed and registered bike tour company.
Our bikes: Our fun beach cruisers and step-through city bikes are
built just for us every year and are perfect for Berlin. We believe
you’re on vacation so let us take care of the logistics. Our bikes are
insured and we’re one of few insured as a bike tour operator.
Our services: In addition to great bike tours we offer bike rental,
super-fast wifi, free clean bathrooms, and travel assistance from our
knowledgeable staff, all from our TV Tower location in Alexanderplatz.
We also have a second shop at the Zoo Station from which we rent
bikes. At both locations you will find our friendly staff ready to help!

Reich Tour
Berlin Wall & Cold War Tour
Germany’s darkest hours explained
East and West, yesterday and today
5 hours |
THIRD
REICH
14 km
This powerful tour explores Berlin
as the capital city of Nazi Germany. We visit the former Jewish
quarter, location of Nazi bunkers,
an air raid shelter, anti-aircraft
installations, war-damaged buildings, Nazi resistance monuments,
WWII battlefields, and more.
Hitler’s rise: Understand the
circumstances that allowed a maniac like Hitler to achieve power.
Victims of the Nazis: Learn not
only about the grim fate of so
many persecuted by the Nazis, but
also the hardships that beset ordinary citizens.
Resistance movements: Gain
insight on resistance movements
against the Third Reich and assassination attempts on Hitler at the
July 20th 1944 Memorial.
5 hours |
14 km
We head away from the Mitte district and the pedestrian Cold War
sights to take in more of the former East, more of the Wall, and
more of what makes Berlin the
unique city it is today.
Architecture: We head east
along the imposing Karl-Marx-Allee before exploring the East Side
Gallery, the famous Berlin Wall
section covered with graffiti. We
visit the powerful Treptower Park
Memorial and wind through the
former death strip to see former
checkpoints and hear tales of espionage and escape attempts.
Total Context of the Cold War:
We’ll timeline other important
worldwide events to show how
these effectively put Berlin at the
forefront of Cold War tension.
Legacy of the war: Draw the
connection from the end of World
War I to Hitler’s rise, and consequently his fall to the building of
the Berlin Wall.
East vs. West: By showing counterculture in the former West, blatant propaganda in the former East,
and subtle symbolism in today’s
urban landscape, this tour shows a
completely different side of Berlin.
Nazi Germany / 3rd Reich
Topic Tour Highlights:
Berlin Wall & Cold War
Topic Tour Highlights:
Seeing where Jewish businesses were destroyed during the infamous Night of Broken Glass, as well as the monumental New Synagogue that survived that fateful night.
Exploring the destroyed remnants of Berlin’s old train station – from
which Jews were deported to concentration camps – now standing as
both grim reminders of Holocaust atrocities and the damages of war.
Visiting one of the few remaining air raid shelters, which was topped
with anti-aircraft guns and filled far beyond capacity during the
Battle of Berlin.
COLD
WAR
Visiting the imposing Treptower Park Soviet Cenotaph. This is sure
to be one of the most impressive sights on your European vacation.
Some 5000 fallen Soviet troops are buried here and the reliefs lining
the memorial are the finest of Stalinist propaganda. It’s off the beaten
tourist path – yet quite accessible by bike – and not to be missed.
Retracing more than 5km of where the Wall stood to understand
differences still existing in former East and West Berlin.
Hearing numerous anecdotes of escape attempts and techniques,
many on-site where they actually took place.

RAW tOUR: BERLIN ExPOSED
The eccentric and uncensored sides of Berlin
5 hours |
RAW
BERLIN
Palaces & Gardens of Potsdam
A fantastic day trip rivaling Versailles and Neuschwanstein
16 km
Contemporary Berlin has a reputation as a vibrant bastion of counterculture, progressive thought,
and creative spirit. It’s teeming
with “stay-cationers,” street art,
and non-conformists, while juggling with gentrification, integration, and even a high-tech boom.
Colliding ambitions: For some,
bare post-Cold War areas mean
appealing public spaces, while for
others this land represents unique
investment opportunities. See
thriving squats and where this endangered lifestyle is transforming.
Urban renewal: The former Tempelhof Airport and reclaimed noman’s-land exemplify Berlin’s continuous development that few
other cities can rival.
“Multi-kulti”: Multiculturalism’s
benefits come with integration
struggles. We delve deep into
Kreuzberg to focus on Germany’s
historical guest worker programs
and their impact on current politics and social dynamics.
Raw Tour: Berlin Exposed
Topic Tour Highlights:
Seeing how Berlin is a canvas for street art and graffiti. We’ll point
out some iconic examples, discuss the artists and their motivations,
and show you what to watch for.
Riding through Tempelhof Field, once used in West Berlin’s lifesustaining airlift, and now the city’s coolest park with everything
from city gardening to kite skating. Don’t miss biking the old runways!
Seeing local hotspots tucked away from the main tourist trail. Many
people come to Berlin for a visit- this tour will show you why we are
here to stay!
6,5 hours |
16 km
Potsdam is Berlin’s most popular
day-trip destination and for good
reason. It’s a veritable playground
for biking with many Prussian and
Cold War sights tucked deep in
parks and along quiet alleyways.
POTSDAM
Sanssouci: Explore the New
Palace, Orangerie, the windmill,
gardens and Fredrick the Great’s
famous Sanssouci Palace.
Historic Center: Ride through
Potsdam’s Brandenburg Gate and
through the Dutch quarter. Compare the quaintness of Potsdam
with the big-city feel of Berlin.
New Gardens: See the fantastic
Marble Palace before going into
Cecilienhof, where Truman, Stalin,
and Churchill met after the Second
World War. Entry and audio guide
included! (Reg. 2 6)
Cold War: Ride through no-man’sland between West Berlin and East
Germany and over the Glienicke
Bridge where Cold War spy exchanges routinely took place.
Palaces & Gardens of Potsdam
Topic Tour Highlights:
Appreciating the power, lifestyle, and grandeur of the Hohenzollern
legacy through their various lavish gardens, parks, and palaces.
Understanding the impact the Potsdam Agreement at Cecilienhof
had on Europe to close out World War II, foreshadowing an era of
tension and distrust in the ensuing Cold War. Explore the interior!
Realizing that with its 20+ palaces, numerous parks and gardens,
unique WWII and Cold War role in history, and distinct present-day
flair, Potsdam is far more than the “Versailles of Berlin”, but rather
deserving of its UNESCO World Heritage status in many ways.

Stay, where
BERLIN happens
Using Berlin’s Public Transport
It’s the honor system here so if you get caught without a ticket it’s
an on-the-spot 240 fine. Ticket checks are the norm, so buy your
ticket; playing clueless tourist usually does not work! Get tickets in
buses and trams, and on the - and - Bahn platforms. Don’t forget
to validate them in the little yellow or red boxes near the ticket vending machines.

If you need more help, drop by our shops!
FAT TIRE BIKE TOURS | 25
helpful hints and advice
For more tips see our website.
Where can I get souvenirs and memorabilia?
If it’s cheesy, often fake Russian and GDR memorabilia you are after,
head for Checkpoint Charlie. Have fun negotiating! You can find
higher quality woodcrafts, figurines, beer steins and more in the
shops along Unter den Linden and in the Nikolaiviertel. And not to
overlook, we have great postcards and our classy Fat Tire shirts right
in our Alexanderplatz shop!
Where can I surf the Internet and stay socially connected?
We have you covered. Just jump on our free WiFi at our shop, or use
one of our computers – it’s free!
How do I use the phone here?
First of all, coin-operated phones are rare, so pick up a phone card
from a myriad of media stores or kiosks. Berlin’s area code is 030,
so dial that before the number when calling from within Germany.
So, calling us from Germany is 030 2404 7991. If calling from abroad,
drop the first 0 and replace with Germany’s code 49. For example,
calling us from London is 00 49 30 2404 7991. Just pop in 2404
7991 if you are just down the street.
Where can I change money?
Alexanderplatz, like many other main stations, have currency exchanges. Just look for the sign “Wechselstube.”
What about some good eats, drinks, and nightlife?
Always a great evening activity, and a great way to sample food at
some terrific local spots, is our Evening E-Bike Tour (page 13). If you
want to hit the town on your own, find delicious burritos and quesadillas at Dolores 8 , mouthwatering burgers at The Bird 7 , great
favorite tastes and events at the Hard Rock Cafe 4 , and tasty German Spätzle at Repke 3 . Berlin also has fantastic beer gardens, like
Prater 5 , and Schleusenkrug 1 . Round off the day with Berlin’s
legendary nightlife – more clubs than any other European city. Great
places to start are around the Eberswalder U-bahn, the Simon-DachStrasse in Friedrichshain, or by heading out on the Pub Crawl with
our friends at Insider Tours.
What about a movie in English?
Movies listed as “OV” are in the original language. Cinestar 2 in
Potsdamer Platz is a great option with 8 screens, stadium seating,
and you can enjoy a beer while watching the movie!
What’s the norm on tipping?
Tipping is always appreciated. Most patrons will round up about 5% –
10%. So if your total is 27.10, you may want to tell your server 27.50
or 28.00 when he or she comes to the table for payment.
What about visiting Potsdam?
Potsdam is one of the best day trip options from Berlin – Check out
our Palaces and Gardens of Potsdam Tour (page 11) – it’s a great
way to see the best of Potsdam, like Sanssouci Palace, the Dutch
Quarter, and Cecilienhof. On bikes and with our fantastic Englishspeaking guides, you will see all the best sites. If you would like to
see the sites on your own, the RE 1 train (quick) or S7 (more frequent)
travel from Alexanderplatz to Potsdam. Potsdam is great for bikes –
just rent with us at either of our Berlin locations and you can take
the bike with you, just remember to pick up a bike ticket!
What about heading to the Sachsenhausen Concentration Camp
Memorial?
Built in 1936, visiting this camp is a moving experience and just outside of Berlin. Head out on your own using public transport, or get
a great tour there with the 100% non-profit Mosaic Tours e.V. See
their info on page 31.
How do I get up the TV Tower?
Our tour customers can save a Euro by picking up
tickets in our shop- just 211! Make sure to have about
an hour in case you go before tour.
Are the locals really in love with David Hasselhoff?
Yes. Well, not really, but at least back when the Wall fell they were.
Hasselhoff played to a crowd of a million strong at what was left of
the Berlin Wall at the Brandenburg Gate on New Year’s Eve in 1989.
His “hit” song, “Looking for Freedom,” was at the top of the West
German charts when the Wall fell, prompting Hasselhoff to say in an
interview, “I find it a bit sad that there is no photo of me hanging on
the walls in the Berlin Museum at Checkpoint Charlie.”

BERLIN FACTS & FIGURES
Ask our guides for more statistics and anecdotes
Here are some interesting facts and figures about Berlin. These are
just some of the many things you‘ll hear about during the tour!
matically speaking, he should have said, “Ich bin Berliner”, but hey,
he still got the point across that, “I am [like] a citizen of Berlin.”
Present Statistics
In just the final days of WWII, more than 100,000 Berliners lost
their lives to the Russians in the fight for Berlin.
The capital of Germany again as of 1999, Berlin is Germany’s largest city with about 3.4 million inhabitants.
Berlin covers 891 km2 (about 556 mi2), making it:
More than 8 times the size of Paris
Still only about 1/2 the size of Sydney or London
The municipal area has more trees than Paris, more bridges than
Venice, 3 opera houses, 2 zoos, 150 concert halls and theaters and
170+ museums and exhibitions.
Until recently there was more construction in Berlin than in any
other European city and it trailed only Shanghai and Dubai worldwide.
Berlin’s debt level is around 2 67 billion, or more than 2 19,000
per Berlin inhabitant.
Elections in 2001 put the Social Democrats in power and made Klaus
Wowereit, Germany’s first openly gay leading politician, mayor.
He famously called Berlin ‘Poor, but sexy’.
DID YOU KNOW?
As flaunted in the tabloids, it was over a 5th floor balcony railing
from the Hotel Adlon (in Pariser Platz, and seen on the City Tour)
where Michael Jackson dangled his baby to the hysterical crowd.
Berlin residents must pay annual taxes of 2 150 to own a dog and
2 25 to own a hamster.
Kaufhaus Des Westens (KaDeWe) is Europe’s largest department
store.
The Berlin Thunder American football team won the World Bowl
in 2001, 02 and 04, but the league was disbanded after 2007.
Berlin in the 20th Century
The Berlin Airlift lasted from June 1948 to May 1949. More than
275,000 flights were flown carrying more than 2.3 million tons of
supplies! There were 70 British and American casualties.
The Berlin Wall was 155 km (96 miles) long and 3.6 m (11.86 ft)
high with 302 watchtowers. More than 170 people were killed trying
to escape.
In John F. Kennedy’s famous speech regarding the Berlin Wall, he
stated, “Ich bin ein Berliner.” Literally, this translates to “I am a
jelly donut” because a ‘Berliner’ is a type of jelly donut. Gram-
DID YOU KNOW?
Hitler brought 7,000 prostitutes back to Berlin for the 1936 Summer Olympics, reminiscent of decadent 1920s Berlin.
The very first bomb dropped by the Allies on Berlin during WWII
killed the only elephant in the Berlin Zoo.
The design for the Neue National Gallery was originally intended for the Bacardi Rum headquarters in Cuba, but, because
of the Cuban Revolution in 1958, ended up in Berlin.
The Trabant, the official sedan of East Germany and with a body
largely made of resin-based plastic, was initially designed to be a
three-wheeled motorbike, and could only go 0 – 60 mph (100 kmph)
in 21 seconds.
Berlin Prior to the 20th Century
The Hohenzollern dynasty ruled Prussia — with Berlin as its
capital — for about 500 years (1414 - 1919).
Berlin lost more than a third of its population during the Thirty
Year’s War (1618 - 1648).
When Berlin became the capital of unified Germany in 1871, the
population boomed and by 1880 the average number of inhabitants per building lot rose to 60. Averages in Paris were only 20
and in London only 8.
DID YOU KNOW?
In November 1923 the hyperinflation after WWI peaked with
1 US$ = 4.2 trillion marks (US$ 1 = 4,200,000,000,000 marks).
Prussian King Friedrich Wilhelm I (1713 - 1740) had a fetish for tall
men and a personal army of giant troops. He also spent 80%
of tax revenue building the mighty Prussian army, which his son,
Friedrich the Great, used extensively.
Friedrich II banned imported coffee to boost sales of the local alternative: beer.
In 1871, after the unification of Germany, Berlin was the center of
the largest military parade of its history and a special “Commemoration Beer” was served. Although exactly the same as the regular brew, restaurants charged a few pennies more because of its
historical significance.

Berlin offers something for every taste
Berlin offers something for every taste
Berlin has more than 170 fantastic museums, galleries and exhibitions
and it would take an entire brochure to cover all of them. We understand that you can‘t see them all, so here are our favorites:

Built in 1962 right next to the famous border crossing, it provides an
inspiring tale of the Berlin Wall and innovative escape attempts.
Organization is not this museum’s strongpoint, so focus your time
in the first half, where many escape mechanisms and tactics are
displayed.
Pergamon Museum 3

German Historical Museum 6
Unter den Linden 2

The front museum houses a magnificent portrayal of German history that’s not to be missed. Start with the upper floor that details
German history from its beginnings until WWI. The ground level continues with the rise of the Third Reich, WWII, and present day Germany as part of the EU. The rear museum, designed by I.M. Pei,
houses temporary exhibits usually dealing with 20th Century topics.
Neues Museum 7
Potsdamer Strasse 50

For 20th Century art, including expressionist and Bauhaus works, as
well as interesting post-WWII pieces, head to the New National Gallery. Afterwards, spend time in Potsdamer Platz, home to the Sony
Center, fantastic modern architecture, and Berlin’s largest originallanguage movie theater.

alone! It’s home to the Pergamon Altar and the Ishtar Gates from
Babylon as well as countless other priceless relics from antiquity.
Don’t forget to check out the Middle-Eastern wood paneled ceilings.

This free outdoor gallery is the longest stretch of Berlin Wall still
remaining. While the graffiti isn’t ‘original,’ the scenes do provide a
vivid tale of the stark political turmoil surrounding The Wall. Make
sure to take a break at the many beach bars now behind The Wall.
26, 24 reduced
Located directly on the Spree River, across from the Berliner Dom,
the DDR Museum is an interactive way to explore daily life in the
former GDR. Check out the hands-on exhibits, watch TV in a GDRera furnished living room and take a simulated drive in a Trabi car!
Jewish Museum
Lindenstrasse 9-14

Tu - Su 10a - 8p, Mo 10a - 10p, closed on Jewish holidays

Housed in an impressive building by architect Daniel Liebeskind, this
museum explains the often troubling history of German Jews from
Roman times to the present day.
Topography of Terror 5

Daily 10am – 8pm (until dusk)
Hamburger Bahnhof
Invalidenstrasse 50
39 78 34 11
Tu/We 10a - 6p, Th 10a – 8p, Sa/Su 11a - 6p
This is another free gallery directly behind a stretch of remaining
Berlin Wall. This exhibit portrays the prison and interrogation tactics
of the Nazi Gestapo. There are free multilingual audio guides with a
picture ID deposit.
This old train station has now been converted into a huge contemporary art museum. Andy Warhol’s works feel right at home amongst
the multimedia displays, sculptures, photography and room & light
installations.
