The first book explains the use of MegaZine3 books and some basic concepts; and summarizes the
features. It is highly recommended to read those chapters before studying this book.
This tutorial is addressing all those who want to create books. It helps to organize all the folders and
files and provides the background information needed to make best use of the features and functions
of MegaZine3.
The third book is for advanced users, developers and designers looking for ways to adjust the book to
their needs, expand the features and change the look&feel.
Also topics like integration into CMS systems or swf pages, the connection to Facebook, use of
Youtube and forms, email, Google Analytics and interactive expansions will be discussed.
This book is not ready yet. We expect to have the first draft available in August 2010.
The fourth book provides details about our license types for commercial users and the license
agreement.
Hint
This is a first, incomplete and not fully corrected and tested version. The first chapters should be usable already, but some links might be outdated or incorrect. Please bare with us, we’ll work on completing and correcting the chapters ASAP.
But what is available already will be helpful nevertheless. Therefore we decided to publish this first
draft despite those deficiencies.

Quickstart
The fast guide for the impatient user
This chapter is dedicated to those who hate reading documentation and an early hands on practice.
This is a how-to for two special use cases are: PDF conversion and photo books.
We prepared a special configuration file for both use cases.
We recommend reading later chapters also, which explain the logic behind naming conventions,
folder structures and the use of the tools. This will help to get the most out of MegaZine3.
The Fehler! Verweisquelle konnte nicht gefunden werden. is a good next step giving an overview
about several features of MegaZine3.
Preparation





Create a new base folder (location and name can be freely selected)
Declare that base folder as trust worthy for use with FLASH
Download MegaZine3 Binaries and unzip/copy into the base folder
Download mz3_creator Tools and unzip/copy into the base folder
Download and install notepad++ (context sensitive text editor) and install
PDF-Conversion






Download and install pdf2swf Tool and unzip/copy into the base folder
Download _config_quick_pdf.bat and unzip/copy into the base folder
start _config_quick_pdf.bat (double click).
The folder _custom_files/c_quick/pdf will be created
Copy a PDF file of your choice the folder _custom_files/quick
Rename that PDF file to quick_pdf.pdf (i.e. bookname = quick and version name = pdf)
Start _config_quick_pdf.bat again.
Now the PDF file will be converted to swf-pages and a MZ3-Buch will be created and shown.

Modify the file _config_quick_pdf.bat with notepad++ to adjust e.g. page count

Photo Book
Preparation:





All Preparation as discussed before
Download _config_quick_foto_en.zip and unzip/copy into the base folder
Copy the downloaded folder and files to the base folder and confirm that a combination of an
existing _custom_files folder with the downloaded one is OK (if that folder already existed).
Either use the provided sample photos or optionally copy your own .jpg or .png photos into
the folder _custom_files/c_quick/de/jpgpng
Most probably you have to rename your photos, because they must be named like img_l1,
img_l2, … with the proper extension .jpg or .png.
If you would like to use higher quality photos for higher zoom levels, you also have to provide
the respective img_h1, img_h2, … versions.
The „Graphic Tool xnview“ or a similar program can be used for those tasks
Version 1: using Plugin Batchpages

Start _config_quick_foto_b.bat (double click)
This creates a MZ3 books and opens it in your browser. Up to 10 photos will be positioned,
each on a single page. The photos will be scaled to fit the page. Aspect ratio of a page is configured to 4:3
Version 2: Single Pages

Start _config_quick_foto_p.bat
This creates a MZ3 books with 4 pages and opens it in your browser.
You can adjust the file quick/foto/megazine.mz3 which describes the MegaZine3 book.
You could copy the 4 sample pages, adjust the name of the files with the photos and with this can
easily create a book with more pages.
You also can adjust the base name of the photo files in the batchpage plugin.
If you have photos in portrait format or images of different aspect ratio than 4:3 you also have to
make some adjustments.
It is also possible to distribute several images on one page..

Demo-Book (short version)
The MegaaZine3 Demo Book uses several different features combined in one book and also can serve
as base for own books. Useful parts can be copied and modified, unused parts can be deleted, new
elements can be added.
These compents are part oft he package:
 Full MegaZine3 Frameworks (Binaries, recent nightly build)
 A directory with sample date
o A PDF File and the already converted swf pages
o Some jpg and png Images
o 2 videos (mp4 and f4v format)
o 1 audio files (mp3)
 Complete set of mz3_creator command files (batch files to supprot in creating MZ3 books)
 A preconfigured _config_d_demo.bat file , which quickly creates a working MZ3 book making
use oft he sample data. An Offline version will be created (prepared to be copied on CD; ready
to run without browser and Flash plugin).
Creation of the demo book


Download Demo-Package (ca. 60 MB) and unzip/copy into the base folder
Start _config_d_demo_de.bat
An Offline MZ3 book will be built, based on the sample data
The file megazine.mz3, which will be interpreted by the MegaZine3 Software, is after a successful run
of the command file located in folder d_cd/demo/megazine/.
This file can be analysed with an editor like notepad++.

In this chapter we discuss some tools we believe being helpful. We give support in installing those
tools that are available for free.
You can find a list of links at Free Tools and Software. Tools discussed here are:

swf-tools (standard tool to convert PDF files into swf pages)

xnview (tool to manage, change, rename pictures)

Notepad++ is free and knows about many different „languages“. It is capapble to color code different
code swgments. Here an extract of languages supported:







The MegaZine3 control file megazine.mz3 is an xml file, despite is’s extension .mz3.
That special extendion is used to distinguish mz3 files from other file types. The same is true for
*.asul files, which are xml files also but special configuration files used by MegaZine3 to define the
look and feel (like color and show of butiins, postion of GUI elements, …).
Please configure notepad++ to use „XML“ settings to show .mz3 and .asul files.
Download and Installation
Notepad++ is free and available in many servers, e.g. at Heise.
After downloading the file the installation is quickly done; jsut accept all suggested settings.

Without the setting of a (programming-) language, only black/white text is presented. Which makes
reading pretty difficult. and syntax errors (like missing paranthesis) are difficult to detect

Everything becomes much easier to be read…
Besides the capailities of every editor like search and substitute, notepad++ is able to substitute
strings in all files in a folder, a file comparison line by line is supported and much more.
The comparison of files is extremely helpful if you want to check for changes in configuration
settings.
Here an example of such a line by line comparison:

pdf2swf – Tool to convert PDF files into swf Pages
Download the swf Tools
Click on the link below to download the pdf2swf tools. The latest version of the tools can be found
directly at http://www.swftools.org.
The installation is shown in a short video.

Our suggested „workflow“ making use oft he mz3_creator tools is explained in chapter Fehler! Verweisquelle konnte nicht gefunden werden..

The Open Source software pdf2swf is used to convert all pages of aPDF file into single swf pages.
we know and describe the use under Windows only. The pdf2sqf tool can also be used under Linux
(most probably also the MAC is supported), but we cannot give any guidance for those platforms.
Besides the use of pdf2swf as part of our mz3_creator tools ((see chapter Fehler! Verweisquelle
konnte nicht gefunden werden. and Fehler! Verweisquelle konnte nicht gefunden werden.), this
tool also can be used stand alone to convert PDF files.
This can be done either using the command line, or together with the program pdf2swf_gui.exe,
which is installed together with pdf2swf and offers a graphical interface. This kind of use could be
helpful to find out the best fit set of parameters for an optimal conversion of PDF pages.

Adjustment of the installation path
The pdf2swf program is expected to be located a tone of these paths:



C:\Program Files (x86)\SWFTools\pdf2swf.exe
C:\Program Files\SWFTools\pdf2swf.exe
C:\SWFTools\pdf2swf.exe
If the pdf2swf.exe file cannot be found at one of these locations, an error message asks to either provide the program or to adjust the path settings.
Such adjustment can be made directly in the _mz3_creator.bat file. The row with the definition tob e
changed looks like this:
SET PDF2SWF=C:\Programme\SWFTools\pdf2swf.exe
You can search for SET PDF2SWF; that row is in the range of row number 560.
Please change the path c:\Programme\SWFTools\ tot he correct path where pdf2swf.exe is located
on your computer.

Use of the pdf2swf Tools
If you use the mz3_creator tools (i.e. _config.bat, _make_book.bat, _mz3_creator.bat), you do not
need to care about pdf2swf. The only reason might be to optimize the parameters/switches controlling the conversion to make some tweaks.

Graphic Tool xnview
If you have to rename many pictures, want to create copies of images with new format or quality or
similar jobs, you should have a look at xnview.
The way to operate that tool is not really intuitive, but learning how to make use o fit is worth the
effort.
Renaming of files is achieved with the command batch-renaming (sorry, I have no English version at
hand)..
With this names of images can be modified in exchanging single characters or part of the name. Or
build the name from scratch based on defined algorithms
A batch conversion support many ways of format changes.

Installation of the Demo Package
An english version is available as mz3_d_demo_en.zip Datei for download on our server.
This step-by-step instruction shows how to build and run the demo book on your computer:
1. Download the package (60 MB!)
2. Create a new folder (name and location at your choice) which we will call base folder and
copy/unpack the files into that folder (WinZip and 7Z are useful tools for it if your system does
not support zipped folders).
3. Call the batch file _config_t_demo_de.bat with a double click
4. At the end of the creation process please hit any key (after reading the messages) to start the
demo book
5. Flip the book to check out the built in features. You also can use the online version of the
book available here: Online Demo Book
6. Check out the created megazine.mz3 file in folder
base_folder/d_cd/demo/megazine/
Use a text editor (suggested: notepad++) for that, and get a feeling about how a complex configuration file looks like. You will make adjustments later directly in those files, since it is the
most powerful and fastest way.

What is needed to create the demo book?
You will need this to successfully build the demo book on your PC:
 A computer with some free disk space (>200 MB)
 A fast internet connection; the faster the better ;-)
 A text editor
You could use even WordPad (in case of Windows), but we suggest to use a context sensitive
editor like notepad++. Links are provided in chapter Free Tools and Software, and a detailed
description can be found in chapter Notepad++ - contect sensitive Editor
 The Demo Package with these components:
 Sample data
 Some sfw pages
 some jpg images
 a png page for the front cover
 audio files (mp3 format)
 video files (in .f4v and .mp4 format)
 The MegaZine3 Software in Binary form (the MegaZine3 frame work)
 The MZ3-FLASH program for Windows (megazine.exe), to create and view an Offline book
(without the need of an internet connection and browser)
 The mz3_creator Tool:

The automatic conversion of PDF files into MZ3 books will be discussed in chapter

Preparations to create the base folder
A new, empty folder should be created, the base folder. This folder will hold the mz3_creator batch
files, the components of the books, the books, the MegaZine3 software.
Name and location can be freely chosen. The mz3_creator tools need red/write permission for all
folders and files in the base folder.
This new folder will be called base folder throughout this tutorial..

Be patient, size is about 60 MB!

The packed files in the ZIP folder must then be extracted/copied to the base folder. If your operating
system dows not support zipped files natively, you can use Winzip or 7Z for that..

Description of the base folder structure
The general structure of the base folder is the same as explained in chapter Fehler! Verweisquelle
konnte nicht gefunden werden. in detail.
This is a snap shot of the base folder content after the files of the demo package had been extracted.
All batch files of the mz3_creator tools start with a „_“.
Supporting files start with the letter „z“.
Discussion: Batch file _config_d_demo_en.bat
This file was created by copy out of the (template) file _config.bat.
This was performed by the batch file _make_book.bat, You always should start with this file first
when creating a new book. Then some parameters had been modified so you just have to start that
file to create the demo book fully automatically. You can edit and analyse _config_d_demo_en.bat
with notepad++. All parameters are explained with comments.
More details about the use oft he mz3_crator tools will be given in chapter Fehler! Verweisquelle

Comments are in green. Parameters are defined by SET. You can adjust the behavior of your
MegaZine3 book in changing these parameters.
Bulding the Demo Book
The demo book is built using the components provided in folder _custom_files/d/demo/.
First the batch file _config_d_demo_de.bat then the _config_d_demo_en.bat should be started with
a double click. Both batch files create the respective language version of the book; without interac-

tion. Some details about the conversion process including what files are found and used are output
in the command file window.
Both batch files are identical but the parameter language.
The demo book works as offline version without internet connection
and browser. All steps are shown in the (to be updated!) Video
Hint:
To have both languages supported at the same time, you must run both versions once. After that you
should start the file _config_d_demo.bat, which as only difference has a language list defined as
lang_list=de,en
This creates a book with both languages and adds the language selector (the country flags) to the
navigation bar.
Discussion: The MZ3 configuration file megazine.mz3
The _config files (or more precisely the batch file mz3_creator.bat which is called by the _config
files) create a new folder named d_cd/demo/. This folder holds all files needed to run the final book.
Those are e.g. the images (on folder d_cd/demo/en/jpgpng/), the swf-files (in folder
d_cd/demo/en/pages/) and the MZ3 control file megazine.mz3 in folder d_cd/demo/megazine/
The Flash program megazine.exe is located in folder d_cd/demo/megazine/.

To start a book, that file megazine.exe must be called.
If an autostart of a CD/DVD is enabled, this is performed by the autoexec.ini file, which will start the
book automatically when the CD is inserted.
If you are a MAC user, you need the folder megazine.app. A link to that file is provided in chapter
Fehler! Verweisquelle konnte nicht gefunden werden.. The megazine.mz3 file defines an MZ3 book.
The definitions in this file are interpreted by the MegaZine3 Software and at the end make the Page
Flip Book.

The following screenshot shows the first chapter of the demo book, which just defines the front cover, followed by the chapter with the swf pages, where (batch)pages is used. Then the declaration of a
single page with audio (<snd> element), two overlayed images (<img> element) and a video file
(<vid> element). follow.
Details on batchpages:
The Plugins batchpages only needs a few rows of definitions, starting with the tag pages, to define all
swf pages. The number of pages is defined with the parameter count.
Here we have 3 definitions/rows:
1. the path names for the two different language versions (with low quality images):
pages_lxx.swf
2. the path names for both supported languages in higher quality:
pages_hxx.swf. The selection of either the low or high quality images is defined by the zoom
parameter scale, here set to the value of 2.
3. the path names to those files (again by language) that will be used in case of print. Here the
same high quality files are used.

Final Remark
The created MZ3 book (the megazine.mz3 file with all folders and files) can be analyzed for educational purposes. Details about the used plugins. elements and parameters can be found in the wiki
and forum; and in the following chapters..

Photo Books
Photo books can be built in several ways:




Using Tools like MS-Word, InDesign, Photoshop, Scribus, ??? the pages can be designed and
photos placed. After completion of the book a PDF file can be created, e.g. by „print as PDF
file“. That PDF file then can be converted as every standard PDF file making use of the
mz3_creator tools (see Fehler! Verweisquelle konnte nicht gefunden werden.).
Advantage:
easy combination of text, grphics and photos, text available in high quality (.swf files with
vvectorized text), easy and fast creation of complete books, full control of the design of the
book
Disadvantage:
Adding video and audio either needs programming in FLASH or a combination of batchpage
chapters and chapters with single, manually defined pages is needed
Definition of single pages
It is possible and after a first learning curve pretty easy to compile chapters and single pages
out of single elements using <img> for images/graphic files, <vid> for video date, <snd> for
audio and similar elements. With a text editor like notepad++ thise elements can be arranged
individually on pages. This is done by defining single command lines like
<img position=“middle center“ src=“images/img1.jpg“ />
This positions an image img1.jpg located in folder images/ centered in the middle of the page.
Advantage:
Full freedom defining the design of the page, option to additionally place active elements,
cloning of pages in copying single lines of „code“, all functions of MegaZine3 available.
Disadvantage:
steeper learning curve, higher risk of syntax errors (incorrect use of controls) with the need to
test and debug (e.g. using validome.org)
Use of mz3_creator Tools
The batchfiles suzpport the creation of sample books with 4 single pages. That working configuration file can be adjusted/modified and the lines of code defining a page can be easily
copied to build more pages.

Flash is pretty picky regarding security, what in general is a good thing. But can drive you nuts ;-)
Flash does not allow moving deliberately across folder margins what is necessary if several books
should share one MageZine3 software installation.
Remark:
To have several different books sharing one MegaZine3 installation, the path and pointing to the
pages and images must be defined as relative path. Like “../book_1/pages/page_l1.swf
With „..“ telling the OS to go one folder up in the directory tree. Since all relative paths are based on
the location of the megazine/megazine.swf file, such relative path names are necessary.
To allow FLASH to move freely within a certain folder, that name of the folder must be added to the
list of folders accepted. This checking and security encapsulation also is known as “sandbox problem”. Try to google for that and you’ll get several hits!
Fortunately there is an easy way to overcome that problem, which only exists on your local PC. On
the server side this is not requested.
The link needed to adjust the settings can be found in right clicking inside the books; or to be more
precise: within the container of the book (close to the book edge will do it). Flash has to have the
focus also, so probably you have to left click into the book first.
With the right click the Adobe “about window” opens:
And after a clicking on the question mark (this is a new behavior with the latest version!) an Adobe
window opens where you can do your setting.

Click on „global security settings“so a new page opens where you can with setting add“ can add your
folder to the list.
After that FLASH allows free access within that folder. If
you create a new folder, you have to add that folder to
the list also… same procedure.
Please keep in mind:
If you run into enpty, grey pages, this whould ring a the „FLASH security setting bell“!
Another possibility is that the pages cannot be found or the path is incorrect. If you use the pdf2mz2
tools and carefully read the information presented, that usually is not the point. If you modify the
index and megazine.mz3 files directly (what is a common thing once you’re more experienced), this
might become your main problem. Then the console (hit the „#“ key when Flash has the focus) will
give you some hints; if it is enabled. What is the case if you use the pdf2mz3 tools ;-)
Also using http://validome.org can be very helpful to valiate your megazine.mz3 file. Again: ldf2mz3
should avoid those problems and create working files.

A mz3-Book which is presented by a Flash program like megazine.exe. No
browser nor online access is needed.
Therefore an Offline books is the ideal way to show documents/book in electronic form, without internet access.
A MZ3 Book usually is run in a browser using an internet connection to retrieve the data from a server. With correct FLASH settings an online book also can be shown locally on a PC:

These thumbnails are used as page preview...
It is possible to provide thumbnails of correct size and name in the folder
thumbs/. This can accelerate the loading of the first page.
Specific programs performing specific tasks like:
- pdf2swf
An Open Source Solution, converting PDF files into
swf pages used by megazine3.
- notepad++
A context sensitive editor
mz3_creator
A set of batch files supporting during the process of
creating book.
Sublicenses are licenses under a MZ3-HOST or MZ3-PUBL license. Depending
on the size of the license (S: small, M: medium, L: large) the number of sublicenses per license varies. For every title/book one sublicense is needed.
Special case: the maximum page number for the S: small licenses is limited.
If that limit is exceeded, more than one sublicense can be bundled to cover
the needed number of pages (bundling).
