The Shrine is a fraternity based on the Masonic Beliefs of the Fatherhood of God and the Brotherhood of Man. Medinah was founded to further promote the tenets of Freemasonry, brotherly love, relief and truth. Remembering our creed – Faith, Hope and Charity –the greatest of these being Charity – we founded our own Charity, the Shriner’s Hospitals for Children. Nobles, support your Fraternity and your Charity. SUBSCRIPTIONS Subscriptions are included in member dues. Cost to purchase a subscription is $15.00 per year. Medinah Shriner The Potentate’s Perspective What is a Shrine Convention? To answer that question, let’s start with the stereotype. It’s a bunch of “wild and crazy guys” who gather in one particular city, once a year, to have the very best time they can. And that it is. But wait, there is more, in fact a lot more. There is even more of the fun part! There are one or two parades featuring all of the ingenuity of the nobles from all 191 shrine centers. Medinah has some very unique parade units, but so do all the others. A spectator at an Imperial parade can be sure to see something he has never seen before. And then there are the competitions. This year the Medinah Patrol and Motor Corps will be competing with the very best from the other Shrines. Both of those units have done exceptionally well in competition. They put their whole heart into the effort and I, as the Potentate, pop my buttons whenever they perform. Of course I will be rooting for them to bring home the prizes, but regardless of the outcome, I will be so proud of them for making the effort. But even with the stress of competition, that’s not all. It’s not just a big party. There is some business to attend to. There are two corporations that have business sessions at the convention; the fraternal corp. and the hospital corp.. The meetings are conducted concurrently, but the representatives may only vote on the issues for which they have been elected. Medinah has 4 elected representatives and 2 Ad Vitam who vote on both corporations and several hospital only representatives who have formerly been elected representatives and have not missed a convention session since. All elected representatives of the fraternal corporation are appointed voting members of the hospital corporation. Here are some of the fraternal issues up for consideration at the Denver Convention. Several amendments to the bylaws are proposed to give Past Potentates and other long serving delegates additional voting power. If passed, they would increase the number of nobles eligible to vote on future proposals. There are other proposals including adjustments to include the temples created in other countries, to allow families of Shriners to participate in parades and to change the initiation fee. There are several proposals to adjust jurisdictional regulations amongst various temples, but none affecting Medinah. In my opinion, the outcome of the vote on any or all of these proposals will have little impact on the day to day operation of Medinah Temple. In the hospital corporation things are much different. If you have not heard, at present we are spending about $20 million a month of the principal in our endowment fund. This is clearly unsustainable. Following the directives voted on at the last convention, the hospitals are pursuing collection of reimbursement for services from insurance companies where the patients have coverage. Unfortunately, some of the biggest insurers argue that their contract with the families require that the provider (Shriners Hospitals) ask for deductibles and/or co-pays. There are some different proposals on how we should proceed, but believe me, this is a BIG deal. There are also some proposals to increase the number of hospital representatives by adding members of the local Board of Governors. This would increase the number of voting hospital representatives by several hundred. I have tried to present this information in an impartial manner. I will also try to inform you of the outcomes in the same way. If I appear to have a bias, I apologize. I will however, along with all of our other representatives, vote the way I believe is in the best interests of our fraternity and our hospitals. I think I speak for all of our representatives in saying that we accept the responsibility of trying to do the best for our beloved fraternity and hospitals. May God grant us the wisdom and strength to do the right thing. There is much more to a Shrine Convention than just a party. Paul D. Barber, Potentate May - June 2011 3 4 Medinah Shriner TEMPLE COMMUNICATIONS Recorder’s Message Parade Reminders Shriners love being in parades and spectators love seeing Shriner parades. Those two things have gone hand in hand since the first Shriner parade. The thing we Shriners have to remember is that with a parade comes responsibility and liability. The responsibility you have as a parading Medinah Shriner is to follow some simple rules. Yes, simple rules! Such as; You should do nothing before, during or after a parade that would endanger anyone. No touching of spectators while parading and you do not throw things at them. No motorized vehicles shall engage their sirens, flashing lights or colored lights. No alcoholic beverages before or during parades. Only Shriners are permitted to parade with Medinah. The Parade Marshal is in total control of the parade. Not too many rules, right? Well, just remember to practice good Shrine etiquette and you should be just fine. Remember, when in public, you represent nobles everywhere. If you follow the rules, our liability and yours is minimized. Medinah has parade insurance to protect the Temple assets as well as the parading nobles. Your Board of Directors reviews the Temple insurance coverage annually and I recommend you review your personal insurance regularly as well. By following simple rules and acting as a responsible noble, a parade can be enjoyed by everyone. Have a fun and safe parade season. Scott W. May - June 2011 9 One of Medinah’s happiest and successful fund raisers celebrated its 36th year on May 14, 2011, the Medinah Ladies Luncheon and Fashion Show. This year’s theme was “Favorite Things”. It was a sunny but cold day and once again the women of Medinah and greater Chicago land came out to enjoy friendship, food, great fashions and the thrill of winning wonderful prizes, all to benefit Shriners Hospital for Children, Chicago Unit. The funds raised this year are to be used for research and care needed to help children with spina bifida. Over 900 women filled the lobby and ballroom of Drury Lane, Oak Brook Terrace, and hoped it would be their “Lucky Day”. They had a chance of winning some of the one hundred raffle prizes, $250 money hats or instant money by buying a pot of herbs with possible hidden cash. The Grand Prize was a luxurious seven day cruise vacation for two to the Caribbean or Mexico, including air fare on Southwest Airlines. There were many very happy winners of prizes. Tracy Tarantio and her company ZZAZZ Productions showed us some fabulous fashions from top retail stores and featured Chicago designers. The show was complete with two of my “favorite things”, dogs, a beautiful Standard Poodle, Eli, and the adorable tiny Lily, a Yorkie, who captured everyone’s heart. Music, another favorite thing, was also a wonderful part of the show and featured singer and model Anthony Rago who added his singing and sexy self to the women’s enjoyment. Tracy’s dozen or so models covered a variety of sizes and ages. During the final section of formal gowns the models were escorted down the runway by our own Medinah Divan, ending the show with an exciting and satisfying array of fashions and glamour. My heartfelt thanks goes out to all of the committee chairs and their members, Medinah office personnel, and all the Medinah Shrine Ladies and their families who donated their time and gifts to make “Favorite Things” a success. Be sure to join us next year for “The Wonderful World of Fashion” on May 12, 2012, again at Drury Lane, Oak Brook Terrace. With your help our Hospitals can continue their work to help our Shrine Children. Barber had his golf outing on the 17th of June in beautiful Darien IL, at the Carriage Greens Golf Course. It was a beautiful day for golf with the two (2) words that golfers love to hear echoing through out the day: NO RAIN! The outing was attended by 72 golfers, both men and women with the “Best Shot” format used for play. Since the notoriety of this annual outing has spread we even had 4 Nobles from Orak participate. Doug Hepp, Terrible Terry Kleban, Bill Gullikson and Big John Skrundz made the trek into IL. Terrible Terry said everything was going fine until they had to show their Passport’s at the IL Border. Cal Tazelaar and John Boszko were instrumental in signing all golfers in and directing them to dogs, brats and camel’s milk. These Nobles also did a fantastic job bringing bottles of ice cold water to those hot golfers on the course and setting up the golf prizes on the prize table as well. Thanks guys!! Prizes were awarded for low gross scores for both mixed and men only foursomes. The mixed foursome of Sue Sycks, Randy Sycks, Teri Evans and Ryan Sycks won with a score of 73. The all male foursome of: John Dismang, James Dismang, Sam Rizzo and Kyle Slechta won with a gross score of 64. Each group was the recipient of a 600 Club Ticket and a chance to win $50,000.00 for their hard work and strong play. The longest putt honors on the 9th green went to PP Jerry Wilson whose mile long putt would certainly put Tiger Woods at awe! Jerry will be celebrating at Medinah’s Oasis with his prize. A big thank you goes out to Jim Brotts who was the official scorer for this event. One of the high-lights of the afternoon was the putting contest held on the practice green next to the 18th hole. The object of the contest was to putt your ball closest to the hole to win a cash prize. Shari Fey and Kristen Holzkopf spent hours on the practice green monitoring this activity insuring that all golfers entered. The word was that some of the contestants were hesitant at first but when the girls smiled and told them that the proceeds would benefit the children at our hospital all were willing to try their skill. The golfer who was closest to the designated hole was Bob Popovich who won $100.00 for his putting skills. In fact, Bob was not only close to the hole he sank the putt!! However, the real winner in this event was our First Lady Peggy Barber. Between the split the pot raffle and the putting contest over $700.00 was raised for her project at Shriners Hospital. This was a Fun Event and it is gratifying to know that all participants were so generous. Cameraman and Chief Aide Bill Morgan was driving around the course taking pictures of all participants. Now if you don’t see your picture accompanying this article you know who to blame! Bill was doing double duty. He was not only taking pictures for the Medinah Review but he was also passing out doctor’s excuses to those that were supposed to be at work. It was signed Capt. Morgan so I am sure it is official. A special Thank You goes out to Kevin Acker of West Suburban Bank, Barrington who donated golf balls and Ken Mercury of State Farm Insurance Agency, Chicago who donated golf towels. Additionally, Guy Trnka of Laurel BMW was very generous in donating prizes as well. These gentlemen helped make the outing a success. Lastly, we cannot forget the time and energy spent by Debbie Evans Prize Chairwoman, working to insure that the whole outing went smoothly and we had quality prizes. She must be married to some lucky guy. Thank you for coming and I hope to see everyone along with John Daily at the Al Daily Memorial Golf Outing on August 8th benefiting the Shriners Hospital for Children. Lance M. Here are some pictures of their vehicle. May - June 2011 21 22 Medinah Shriner MY OLD RED FEZ My old red Fez has faded a bit; But that hasn’t dimmed my love for it; For into that bit of old head gear are woven the friendships of many a year. It knows the touch of a friendly hand, and symbolizes….you’ll understand…. all things I found both good and fine in my happy days with the mystic Shrine. My old red Fez has faded a bit; But I’m still mighty proud of it; Proud of all for which it stands, the loyal hearts, the willing hands; Ready always to do their best and meet with courage every test; Proud of the memories that are mine of Noble Friends of the Mystic Shrine. My old red Fez has faded a bit; and some day I’ll take leave of it, But not without a friendly smile, for it has been mine for a long long while. So here’s to the red Fez and all those who have worn it; May love and loyalty ever adorn it. May the sun of good fellowship eternally shine in the hearts of the men of the mystic Shrine. We have been rehearsing some new music on the first and third Tuesdays of the month. It helps us keep up on our sight-reading abilities. We also have been playing some new and various marches during the Parades. We would also like to mention that the Smith family has been working on the trailer that we use at the parades. They are doing a great job of renovating and keeping it clean and shiny. We appreciate it. At present we are rehearsing tunes for our Brass Band O.V. on Sunday, July 24 in the afternoon where we will be presenting a free out-doors concert at Medinah. After the concert we will have 3-4 bands playing inside for your listening and dancing enjoyment. They will be different venues such as Jimmy and the Bavarians (German) Synful Saints (Dixieland) Doc Watson Blues Band, Chuck Masny and Friends, and a few other surprises. Hot dogs and other foods will be available as will be drinks at bargain prices. We hope you all can attend. We are asking our Chaplain to provide great weather. Hope to see you all there. P.S We would like to see some of our new Medinah Nobles that were or are musicians come and visit our rehearsals. See or call Roy Hanson or Frank Katzbeck or Chuck Masny for more info. Frank Katzbeck , Assistant Director CLOWNS Hello Fellow Nobles and Ladies It was a busy spring. The Medinah Clowns did two St. Patrick Day parades and the Lombard Lilac Parade, and the Libertyville Parade. The entire Unit was especially excited to entertain at Hospital Day once again on June 5, 2011. We once again put tattoos on kids and made everyone smile. Hot Dog spent weeks talking about the thrill of parading around our beloved Hospital once again. On July 15, 2011, we welcomed Medinah Clown One, our new parade vehicle. The entire Unit and members of the Divan welcomed it in style with a pizza party. We just used it in the Libertyville Parade, and we are looking forward to introducing it to all of Medinah at the Geneva Parade. Our summer parade season will be pretty filled up once again. We have 9 parades over the fourth of July weekend. This is all on top of our regular hospital visits. The Unit is under way with preparations for this year's OV on October 15, 2011 at Medinah. Fliers are out and available at medinah.org. This Year's theme is Medinah's Got Talent. We are looking for those who wish to perform. Please let us know if you are interested as soon as possible. Information is on the flier, or you can contact our Unit Director, Joe "Judgie" Consolo. Cash prizes will be awarded to the three top acts as voted by our three Celebrity Judges and those in attendance. Seeing our version of Simon Cowell is worth the ticket price. More importantly we will be honoring our Potentate Paul Barber and his Lady Peggy. As is Clown Unit tradition, Paul will be dressed as a clown, and made an honorary member of the Clown Unit. There may even be a cream pie involved. The Unit already has a great clown costume in production for Paul. Hope to see all of you there. Keep on smiling and laughing. Hope to entertain you at a parade or event real soon. Joe "Judgie" 24 Medinah Shriner News of Units and Committees DEMOLAY COMMITTEE Illinois DeMolay was selected to host the Heartland Ritual Tournament and is very appreciative of the support shown by the Medinah Shrine Center and Potentate Paul Barber. Young men from Illinois, Ohio, Indiana and Michigan who were judged best at the state level in a particular ceremony, gathered to compete in the presentation of the ritual and public ceremonies of the order to be selected as the best in the region. The winner or team judged best received medals for all winners and trophies for the team events. There were 84 recipients of recognition this year in 28 events. Thanks and appreciation are also extended to the members of Frank S. Land Preceptor of the Legion of Honor for providing judges. To Cyrille Girouard and the catering staff for providing assistance with meals and set up. The young men are looking forward to returning. Lee Bradley, Chairman GREETERS COMMITTEE History of the Greeters Committee Written by Charles Ferre Submitted by Robert Beebe The Greeters Committee was originated in 1944. The Committee has changed over the years. It merged with the Hospitality Committee then separated. In 1961 Noble Sellman C. Schulz started the Greeters Committee as the Chairman. In 1962 it was known as the Greeter Hospitality Committee. The Chairman was Noble Walter Teising. In 1963 it was known as the Hospitality and Greeters Committee. It’s Chairman was Noble Tom Roberts who became Potentate in 1972. In 1966 Noble Stafford Light became Chairman of Hospitality and Greeters Committee. In 1967, when Noble G. William Sullivan became Potentate, Noble Arnold Sund asked to start up the Greeters Committee as a separate committee. Potentate Sullivan gave his consent and Noble Sund became the first Chairman and the first Vice-Chairman was Noble John A. Chapin who committed suicide and was replaced by Noble Al Hulben who soon quit his position and Noble Charles Ferre replaced him. Noble Sund set up the rules which were approved by the Potentate. The rules were: That the officers would be Chairman, Vice-Chairman, Secretary and Treasurer. Only 35 Nobles could be on the committee. Must greet all Nobility at the entrance of the Mosque during all ceremonials, and shall receive from each Noble the password and check their dues cards. Must work the Circus and any other request of the Potentate. At the Imperial Sessions the Greeters will work the registration desk and also distribute gifts. During the 1968 Imperial Sessions in Chicago the Greeters were required to go to the airport and different motels to pick up visiting Nobles and bring them to the loop for their meetings. Cars were furnished to the committee for this purpose. Noble Charles Ferre became Chairman of the Greeters and served in this position from 1973 to 1979. F. Y. I. - The 2012 Greeter Calendars will be available November 5, 2011 May - June 2011 25 News of Units and Committees HOSPITAL USHERS COMMITTEE Hey – Summer is here in full force. That means winter is over and you can’t use the bad weather as an excuse for not being present for your Hospital Ushering and also for not participating in Shrine functions. Come out – see what is going on – who knows you might enjoy yourself. Hospital Day – Open House – June 5th, 2011 has come and gone. This year was the 85th Anniversary of the Chicago Shriners Hospital for Children. The Chicago Hospital was the tenth hospital to be built in the system March 1926. The first was Shreveport, LA September 1922, and the last one was Sacramento, CA April 1997. We couldn’t have asked for better weather. Yes, it was a little on the humid side but there was bright sunshine for the afternoon. 735 guests toured the hospital. Staff members, including some of the doctors were stationed in various locations to explain what was done in that area, why and how. The surgical area, central sterile supply, an operating room were also open. There were forty five Ushers, both Medinah and Orak and we proudly marched in the “World’s Shortest Parade”. When our Committee was announced and it was mentioned that we handled the tour, we got a large round of applause. So far in 2011 the Ushers have been busy – and have again turned in some impressive numbers for the first four and one half months: Number of regular tours of 10 guests or less – 20 Number of visitors on regular tours – 61 Number of Ushers available for regular tours – 26 Number or special tours of 10 guests or more – 25 Number of visitors on special tours – 284 Number of Ushers for special tours – 30 Number of Ushers on duty for this reporting period -361 Total hours on duty – 1264 Total hours conducting tours – 45 In the coming months we will be hosting the Illinois Shrine Bowl football players. These young men are recent high school graduates and have been nominated by their coaches to be part of the Shrine Bowl team. They will tour the hospital, have lunch, interact with some of the patients, and try their hand at some wheel-chair basketball Each of the new Nobles who indicated an interest in the Hospital Ushers on the back of their membership petition have been contacted in the hope that they will join the Ushers Committee. So far three have joined. The Ushers Committee, the largest committee in Medinah is made up of dedicated Nobles committed to lending a hand, helping out at the hospital. Yes, each and every one of you are welcome to come visit and see what the Ushers do – the work isn’t hard – some don’t even call it work. Come see for yourself – you might enjoy yourself. Until we see you in the next issue – Yours In The Faith – Robert Gillfillan Director / Scribe MEMBERSHIP COMMITTEE The dog days of summer are upon us, when our thoughts turn to barbecue, cold beer and a lazy afternoon in the back yard. Many of our lodges go dark during these hot days, so what are we as upright Masons to do to keep ourselves busy? Time to make contact with lost Shriner friends. What better way to spend an afternoon, calling old friends. Lost touch with that Shriner buddy of yours? Haven’t seen him around Medinah recently, wonder where he’s been? This is the time of year to pick-up the phone, hit Facebook, send an email or a text and see what he’s been up to. Our fraternity is built on fellowship and the friendships we have built with other nobles. But sometimes we let things slide, we forget to return that call, don’t cross the room to talk to an old friend at a party and just slowly lose touch. It happens all the time. The next thing we know, we’re thinking “what happened to Joe or Tom or Frank?” Pick up the phone and call that old Shriner buddy. I’ll bet he’d like to meet you at the Oasis for dinner or a beer or join you for a Medinah activity. continued on the next page…. 26 Medinah Shriner News of Units and Committees The hot days of summer are also a great time to get back to your club or unit. It may have been awhile since you went to a meeting or dinner. You may feel out of it and not involved anymore. Think the nobles in your group might not give you a warm welcome back? Balderdash! What defines us as Shriners? Along with our support of the world’s greatest philanthropy, it is our hearty hospitable good fellowship. We’re always welcoming old friends and warmly greet prospects and new members. Get up, and get back to your unit or club or check out a new one and start enjoying that fellowship you enjoyed for so many years. Medinah’s units and clubs are very active during the summer with golf outings, picnics, parties, parading, days at the track and many other activities. It’s a great time to get back in touch. As long as we’re talking about keeping in contact; how do you know what the various committees, units and clubs are doing? First, check the Medinah Web site: www.medinah.org. There is a master calendar of Medinah activities. Check the communications section to see if your unit or club has a current newsletter. Go to the leadership section and send an email to the president of the unit or club. If that doesn’t get you up to date on what’s going on, call or email me. I’ll be glad to help you out, it’s my job: [email protected] , 847-501-5221. Mark Donnell, Chairman MOTOR CORPS The Motor Corps is proud to have two newly elected full members, Patrick Temesvary and his Lady Julia and Kevin Peto and his Lady Lynn. We had a great time at Hospital Day on June 5, 2011. While our newly elected full member Patrick Temesvary and his family were busy selling “My Father is a Shriner” shirts, his son Brandon was presenting the Hospital with a bean bag toss game that he custom made and painted to donate to the Hospital. left to right... Across the whispering sands of Shrinedom, our little Band has travelled for 110 years. From one oasis to another, our music has swooned the hearts of beautiful damsels and charmed parade goers all across the United States and Canada. We, gentlemen, are the oldest Oriental Band in all of Shrinedom and the second oldest unit in Medinah only preceded by Medinah’s champion Arab Patrol. As what happens in many groups, we need to actively look for new members from time to time and this is one of those times. We have a good strong core of Bandsmen but are looking for some new members and possibly you may be interested. We play snake-charming horns, tom-tom drums, cymbals, gongs, bass drums, tambourines and a couple of others I can’t spell. And now…get this…you don’t need to already play an instrument. The horns we play by number or note and our drums beats are easy to catch onto. Our members are happy to share their great knowledge. We have a trailer to ride on with a colorful canopy that helps to keep the hot sun and rain off. We practice every first, third and fifth Friday at 7:30PM at our beautiful Shrine Center. We play at Medinah’s Ceremonials and parades. We have periodic dinners with our Ladies. The next one will be held on July 23rd, gathering for cocktails from 6:00 to 7:00PM, then dinner followed by a film on what else?....Oriental Band competitions. This will be held at the Shrine Center and yes..you or you and your Lady are welcome to join us. We also have some of the best looking caps, jackets, and shirts any Noble could want to wear and are working on new uniforms. Well, Nobles, if you have any questions, please call Steve at 630-709-7875. In the Sunshine of the Shrine, Steve Elliott PAST MASTERS COMMITTEE The Past Masters Committee joined with the Mariners on Hospital Day, June 5, 2011, and helped to give out hundreds of popsicles and just as many bags of popcorn. A member of my Lodge volunteered to come along to help and said that it was one of the best experiences of his Masonic life. He said that he could feel the spirit and magic that Shriners Hospital stood for. NOW THAT IS WHAT WE ARE TRULY ALL ABOUT! Every Shriner and his family needs to visit one of our hospitals at least once so that they can see first hand all of the good we do for the children. Also, just a reminder that on August 27th, 2011, the Past Masters Committee will be hosting a Leadership Seminar for Blue Lodge Senior and Junior Wardens. The seminar will be from 9:30 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. with a lunch break in between. Manny Roth and Sherwin Baker have worked countless hours to see that this event will come to pass. The Past Masters Committee is the primary liaison between Medinah Shrine Center and the Blue Lodges; thus, we are truly fulfilling our mission statement. We have received permission and extensive cooperation from the Grand Lodge of Illinois and extend our thanks for all of their help in this endeavor. A letter has been sent out to all of the Lodges announcing this event. If you know of any Senior or Junior Wardens, please encourage them to attend. This seminar will not be ritual instruction, it will truly be a leadership seminar geared towards unifying and building our fraternity to new heights. If you would like further information, please contact Sherwin Baker at (847) 732 -2570. John Peter Curielli, Director 28 Medinah Shriner Shrine Club Activities CHAIN O’ LAKES The CHAIN O'LAKES SHRINE CLUB, located in Lake County, IL, donated 50 lbs of our famous Vidalia Onions to the Holy Family Church Food Pantry located in Waukegan, IL. Past President Art Waller delivered the onions to the food pantry, which was delighted to receive the donation. The Chain O'Lakes Shrine Club has done well with the onions sales the past number of years. As a matter of fact, the club, having sold out again this year, ended up having to purchase the onions from one of the other local Shrine Clubs to accommodate the donation commitment. The Chain O'Lakes Shrine Club will be sponsoring it's second annual Wine & Beer Tasting fraternal fundraiser on November 12 of this year at Wine Knows in Grayslake, IL. The club will follow that fundraiser up with a charitable fundraiser the following weekend, collecting donations with our "Fez Buckets" at a local Jewel grocery store. The Chain O'Lakes Shrine Club meets each 2nd Wednesday of the month at Liberty Restaurant in Libertyville at 7:30 pm (6:30 dinner). All Nobles interested in joining the club, or just joining in some fellowship, are invited to join us.
