2-4 December 09
The International Wood Construction Conference (IHF2008) provides
architects, engineers and builders with an opportunity to report on
experiences, processes and goals related to wood structures and
construction. At the same time the conference provides an opportunity for architects, building officials, builders and craftspeople,
practicians and educators to learn about the latest developments
and to exchange experiences.
Opening Session
Organized by the German Timber Industry Council
SUSTAINABILITY, ECOLOGY, CERTIFICATION and
THE FUTURE OF CENTRAL TIMBER MARKETING IN GERMANY
Chair: Ludger Dederich, DE-Bonn
The opening session at IHF 2008 was used to present and discuss
the background to the debate on sustainable building certification. In
spite of the official launch of the German Sustaínable Building Certificate at BAU 2009, the label has not yet achieved general recognition.
This session will focus on the present situation and try to show what
alternatives still exist.

The presentations ave held in the speaker‘s mother tongne. All presentations ave Simultaneonsly translaled into German, English and
Italian. French translations ave only available in the main hall.
Before the German Wood Marketing Board had to close its doors at
the end of August, a debate had already begun on the question whether there should be a central timber marketing system in Germany
and if so, how it should be organized. The panel discussion will give
representatives of various sectors of the industry an opportunity to
look ahead and formulate their expectations of such an institution
and participate in a debate.

Architecture Forum
Organized by TU Munich (DE) in close collaboration with Lignatur (CH)
Prefabricated Housing Forum
Organized by the German Federal Society for Prefabricated Housing
(BDF) in collaboration with Stora Enso Timber (DE)
Cultivated construction
Chair: Prof. Hermann Kaufmann, TU Munich, DE-Munich
The Architecture Seminar is a challenging opportunity for in-depth
presentations of timber construction projects in demanding architecture. The focus is not on quantity but on the contribution made to the
cultural environment in the field of construction, and on the question
of appropriate and sustainable construction. The objective is to show
that wooden architecture is becoming increasingly attractive for the
resulting symbiosis of quality and the responsible use of resources.
Market analysis and market opportunities
Chair: Rudolf Sellhorst, German Federal Society for Prefabricated
Housing, DE-Bad Honnef
The construction market has been changing for some time now, leaving the buyer in a position of strength. But there has been no change
so far in the self-perception of the contractors, no move away from
“We can build houses” to “We can sell houses”. And yet the process
is inevitable. Analysis of the market must be followed by definition of
a clear profile on that market and consistent marketing with the help
of modern tools and technologies. Those who offer everything will be
compared with everybody – leaving the price as the only distinctive
feature for the customer. This seminar offers an introduction to the
analysis process.

Connector Technology Forum
Organized by TU Graz in collaboration with Vinzenz Harrer (AT) and
Schmid Schrauben (AT)
Added value of sustainable construction
Chair: Ullrich Huth, President of the Association of German Master
Carpenters (BDZ), DE-Berlin
Such developments as climate change, dwindling resources, fluctuating energy prices and demographic change significantly impact
the value of real estate. Yet too little attention, if any, is paid to
such aspects in the context of real estate investment decisions and
development processes. This seminar will address the challenges of
sustainable construction for real estate investors and home owners,
and consider how timber construction companies can market the
economic advantages of sustainable construction.
Screwed and glued connections in timber construction
Chair: Prof. Dr. Gerhard Schickhofer, TU Graz, AT-Graz
Screwed and glued connections are among the most effective
fastening and reinforcement methods available in the field of wood
engineering, permitting heavy loads to be transmitted with great efficiency. The objective of this preconference seminar is to report on the
latest basic research and applications in Europe, present the relevant
calculation methods and invite debate. Innovations in fastening technology will also be presented.

MARKET FRAMEWORK – Like all industries, the wood industry is dependent on the political and economic framework in which
it operates. In the run-up to an international conference it
is therefore meaningful to consider the relevant political
tendencies and economic developments at the national and
international levels.

Structural change: crises and opportunities
Chair: Prof. Uwe Germerott, BFH Biel, CH-Biel
In the last few years the raw materials crisis, energy crisis
and world economic crisis have also im-pacted the construction industry. The resulting necessary rethink in society
and the business commu-nity is generating an increasing
focus on the sustainable use of resources in life in general
and con-struction in particular. A rethink in the marketplace
in terms of new products takes courage, and that in turn
presupposes a need.

In 1963 he took over the Petermann sawmill in Randegg
(founded in 1924) and soon became active in support of the
wood processing industry. In 1974 he started to produce
finger-jointed window stock. That was followed in 1985 by
the first European production plant for solid wood panels.
And in 1988 he pioneered the industrial production of glulam – an innovation that has been one of the keys to rapid
progress in wood construction.
Laudatio: KommR Ernst Buchacher, Senior partner in Buchacher Holzleimbau, AT-Hermagor
Prof. Dr. Peter Glos, TU Munich, DE-Munich,
He studied construction engineering at TU Stuttgart and
became assistant professor in the Department of Building
and Timber Construction at TU Munich. In the framework of
project SFB 96 on the Reliability of Structures, he performed fundamental research into the strength properties of
wood and received a doctorate in 1978. Following research
fellowships in Canada and the UK, he was appointed Associate Professor at the Institute of Wood Research at TU
Munich, where he worked until 2008.

TIMBER CONSTRUCTION – From an environmental point of view,
wood is unequalled by any other construction material. As a natural and renewable resource, wood has qualities that are vital to our
survival. If wood as a building material did not exist, we would have to
invent it. All actors in the construction industry are accordingly called
upon to ensure that wood plays a greater role as a construction material than in the recent past.
Block A
Block B Host country Sweden
Bridges and recreational walkways
Chair: Tobias Schauerte, Växjö University, SE-Växjö
Timber construction in Sweden has undergone a transformation. For
130 years it was illegal to use wood in supporting structures with
more than two stories, but that changed 15 years ago. The Swedish
Wood Construction Strategy (2004-2008) set the scene for improving
the competitive position of wood construction. The main focus was on
practical requirements calling for further developments in wood construction in various respects. Our Swedish colleagues will present the
results achieved in the country to date, the challenges that lie ahead
and the new Swedish strategy for the future of wood construction.
Chair: Prof. Michael Flach, University of Innsbruck, AT-Innsbruck
With new methods for analyzing existing structures and examples of
modern timber bridges, this block will give an insight into the state
of the art with regard to maintenance and the service life of timber
bridges. New challenges await timber construction companies in the
form of high-level recreational walkways in spectacular designs.

Energy-efficient construction
Chair: Prof. Andreas Müller, BFH Biel, CH-Biel
Wood is an ideal material with diverse potential for the construction
of energy-efficient buildings, a fact that is being recognized by more
and more investors, planners and clients. In the context of sustainability, this means savings in limited energy resources and a reduction in the pace of climate change. From the external envelope of new
buildings to the rehabilitation of existing building stock, optimum
solutions are now available and will be presented in this session.

Urban wood construction – research applied
Chair: Prof. Wolfgang Winter, TU Vienna, AT-Vienna
The main sources of future construction business will be urban renewal, and infill and new develop-ment in the existing urban fabric with
its mainly multistorey buildings. The remarkable solutions in terms
of architecture and engineering that have been adopted for individual
timber buildings in the last few years have underscored the strengths
of wood construction and show its potential to capture bigger market
shares. The pioneering work of the architects involved has been
facilitated by the support provided by the research community, the
standards organizations and the supervisory authorities. The Vienna
area and the wooded region of Styria are good examples.
