But in the Brazilian psyche, the area represents something unique and special, a place which cannot be duplicated or replaced. For Brazilians, the sertão connotes a sense of identity through geographic space. The sertão belongs to the Brazilian heart as much as the Badlands or the Great Smoky Mountains belong to Americans. To say "the sertão is no longer the sertão" indicates that the beloved one's absence or waywardness almost robs the geography of its very existence.2 Background Azulão is a song from Brazil, frequently considered a lullaby, although the text does not reflect this.
