1. John Adams pensava que os americanos iram celebrar o acontecimento em 2 de julho.
O Congresso Continental dos Estados Unidos declarou oficialmente a independência no dia 2 de julho de
1776, dia em que John Adams pensou – ainda que erradamente – que as gerações futuras iriam
comemorar o feito nessa data. 4 de julho, porém, marca o dia em que o Congresso adotou a Declaração da
Independência. Assim que cópias da declaração começaram a circular pelas colônias, as celebrações
arrancaram.
2. Três presidentes morreram no 4 de julho.
John Adams e Thomas Jefferson morreram ambos, separados apenas por algumas horas, no dia 4 de julho
de 1826. Foram rivais políticos e, mais tarde, amigos, tendo ambos assinado a Declaração da
Independência. James Monroe, quinto presidente dos Estados Unidos, foi outro dos líderes a morrer, mais
especificamente a 4 de julho de 1831. Já Calvin Coolidge foi o único presidente dos Estados Unidos a
nascer a 4 de julho.
3. As músicas do patriotismo atual não têm raízes revolucionárias.
Antes da Revolução, “Yankee Doodle” era originalmente entoada pelos oficiais britânicos. Mas o hino
oficial dos Estados Unidos não teve origem durante a guerra da independência. “Star Spangled Banner” é
um poema escrito por Francis Scott Key em 1814, quando os ingleses atacaram implacavelmente Fort
McHenry, em Baltimore, durante a guerra de 1812. Mais tarde o poema foi transformado em música,
tornando-se assim no hino oficial dos Estados Unidos, em 1931.
4. A celebração mais antiga é do menor estado.
Levou algum tempo até que as celebrações do Dia da Independência dessem lugar aos extravagantes
espetáculos de fogos de artifício. A maioria das celebrações não se tornaram regulares até ao século XIX,
mas os responsáveis pelo desfile de 4 de julho, em Bristol, alegam que esta é a celebração mais antiga
referente ao Dia da Independência, tendo lugar todos os anos, desde 1785.

1. John Adams thought the American people would celebrate this happening on
July 02nd.
The United States Continental Congress declared officially their Independence on July
02nd 1776, the day when John Adams thought – in the wrong way – the future
generations would celebrate it on July 04th, however it dates the day the Congress had
the Independence Declaration. As soon as the declaration started to circle through the
colonies, the celebrations took them off.
2. Three Presidents died on July 04th.
John Adams and Thomas Jefferson both died, it was just a few hours of difference,
on July 04th 1826. They were political rivals and, later became friends, having both
signed the Independence Declaration. James Monroe, the fifth President of the
United States, was another to die, more specifically on July 04th 1831. And Calvin
Coolidge was the only one to be born on July 04th.
3. The current Patriotism songs don´t have revolutionary roots.
Before the Revolution, “Yankee Doodle” was originally sung by the British Officials.
But the official United States national anthem didn´t have origin during the
Independence war. “Star Spangled Banner” is a poem written by Francis Scott Key
in 1884, when the English people attacked relentlessly Fort McHenry, in Baltimore,
during the 1812 war. Later the poem was changed in music, becoming the official
national anthem of the United States, in 1931.
4. The most ancient celebration is from the smallest State.
It took some time until the Independence Day celebrations started with the fancy
fireworks shows. The most celebrations didn´t become regular until the XIX
century, but the responsible for the July 04th parade, in Bristol, claimed that this is
the most ancient referring to the Independence Day, which has been happening all
the years, since 1785.
