Everyone is entitled to be stupid, but some abuse the privilege. “VOTED BEST PUB TRIVIA AND BEST HOST IN CHICAGO” - Chicago Hearts Trivia blog Pub Quiz Night That Guy by Kirk Williamson This column’s writing presents an intriguing challenge: Spin my nearly-hallucinatory fatigue into literary gold. Let’s see what I can’t stitch together. A big, juicy middle finger to Shane at Mary’s Attic for shooting me square in the back of my head with his laser-sight rubber dart gun. And if anyone can find 1,001 uses for big, juicy fingers, Shane’s your man! Love you, fucker! A big, juicy apology to Miss Sofia Saffire for not having my shit together enough to do an interview for this issue. I wanted to show the community the softer side of Sofia in anticipation of her hosting the 2011 Windy City Gay Idol finals Sat., June 18. Sofia has grown into her new role as host and fits it like a puzzlingly slender glove. Love her glove at the finals at Sidetrack. I will be offering vodkasoaked bon mots from the judges’ mic. Let’s hope Sofia takes mercy on my mortal soul. See the center spread for your handy Windy City Gay Idol voting guide. Suburban? In the mood to vie for a title? Well, you’re in lady luck, lady. Sat., June 18 also gives you two—count ‘em, two—opportunities to hang your head heavy with crown, namely the Miss Gay Joliet pageant at Maneuvers and the Miss Stonewall pageant at Stonewall Inn. I may have agreed to judge the Miss Stonewall joint, which is later the same night as the Windy City Gay Idol finals. Any kindly gentlemen out there wanna give me a lift to Lyons? I shall reward you handsomely. I promised not to Facebook tag a certain singer/ songwriter in his “brief” debut at Crew. Please refrain from tagging him as well. Mom don’t need to see that. Big ups to Mr. Ouano, Mr. Res-5 and Mr. Meade for all their work in this issue. I’m saving my strength for the big Pride issue, coming June 22. Get ready to see me everywhere in the next few days. I won’t however see you at Midsommarfest. I’ll be workin’ Pittsburgh. Look for my travel column in the aforementioned Pride issue. Consult Moose’s column on page 10 for all the tasty acts (to see, not to perform). And look for our booth at the Fest. Grab a paper, and some love. Well, not quite gold, huh? Would you give me, at least, tungsten? [email protected] nightspots #1044 • June 8, 2011 MAIN COVER IMAGE Sofia and the 12 Windy City Gay Idol finalists Photo by Kat Fitzgerald, www. You have figure out how you can see the amazing cover band Rock Candy, featuring Molly Callinan (Cat Fight), the sexiest frontwoman in Chicago, then have time to squeeze in the always sexy Chicago favorite Sixteen Candles and their crowd-pleasing takes on John-Hughes-era rock. If you miss them, make sure you get to The Glenwood’s Pride Day party with Moosebox as the opener/host [PLUG!]. As I write this I’m staring at a well-worn plastic beer stein (filled with water--it’s only noon) and dreaming of six hours from now when my official street-festival-mojo kicks in with Lincoln Square’s Maifest. You’d think as one of the biggest Some festivals seem to load up all the top acts later in the day. Not Midsommarfest. Sunday kicks off at 2 p.m. with one of my favorite bands. 7th Heaven, a cover band brimming with way to much talent and featuring a reality show winner, will blow your ARCHITECTURE by Marc “Moose” Moder Rock Candy Photo from rockcandychicago.com 7th Heaven Photo by Snack King music whores in this town, I’d be dreaming of Lollapalooza and Pitchfork, but believe it or not, those are just too much for my wallet, and I’m a sucker for great local acts served up by one of Chicago’s zillions of summer street fests. Last year Andersonville’s Midsommarfest eclipsed Boystown’s Pridefest and Market Days for me in terms of good music and hot men: two things that rule my world. This year it’s looking to make both look positively gauche. MSF, as I’m calling mind. If you leave right as the last riff comes from 7th Heaven, you may have time to get to hear the Brazilian rhythms of Chicago Samba at 3 p.m. for a great change of pace. Personally after Chicago Samba I have to go home and walk the dog, but if you’re raging on, the funk and soul of Bumpus will chill you out like a cold beer. Leave it to this fest to give us something for everyone for the finale. You probably already saw Sixteen Candles the night before, so skip them Robbie Fulks Photo by Jon Herrington Sixteen Candles Photo from sixteencandlesband.com it, kicks off at 11 a.m. on Sat., June 11, and just two hours after it starts I’ll be front and center for the rollicking alt-country sounds of Devin & the Straights. Hang tight there because the acrobatic Chicago Spirit Brigade—always a crowd favorite— show how they make cheerleading even gayer, followed by one of my favorite local acts, The Joans (think The Cramps and The B-52s opening for The Smiths in Joan Crawford drag). Then, at 6 p.m. it 10 nightspots June 8, 2011 on Sunday and check out the truly legendary al-country god Robbie Fulks with Nora O’Connor. They’re most likely going to be doing some kids’ stuff too, but no worries. Robbie could sing NWA covers and still make you miss Hank Williams. If you want more Sixteen Candles, come see Moose host them at The Glenwood’s Pride North Festival June 26 at 4 p.m. CREW Splitting the difference. Halsted St., www.glhalloffame.org Brazilian banana Interview by Randy Pubert Nightspots Magazine: Hi, Alex. Where are you from? Alexsander Freitas: I am from Brazil near Copacabana beach, in between there and Ipanema. NM: So you grew up there? AF: Yes, and then moved to LA in 2003. It has been about seven years since I have been back to Brazil. I hope to go back next year, maybe for Carnival. NM: I couldn’t believe how small Carnival actually was until I went there. AF: Everyone goes to the beach. There are tons of people but it is very compact. For 24 hours people are walking, dancing and drinking. NM: How did you get involved in performing in adult movies? AF: I started body building in 2006. I tried to become a pro the year after so I invested more time. I was a personal trainer at the time so I was working out full Alexsander Freitas is an up-and-cumming porn star who has already made a mark, winning Best Three Way at the Grabbys recently. He has shot many films for Raging Stallion Studios and has worked for Hot House, Falcon and Lucas Entertainment, among others. Find out why Nightspots Magazine went bananas over this Brazilian! time. In 2008 I stopped after Mr. Muscle Beach and winning several contests for some health problems. I started modeling. I took some pictures with a good friend of mine in New York and got more comfortable with modeling. I did my first shoots for websites but my first video is Adrenaline with Spencer Reed and Dominic Pacifico. From there I started to do a lot of movies with Raging Stallion and other companies. NM: Do you have a favorite company that you have worked for? AF: My favorite is Raging Stallion because I did most of my videos with them. I feel like they are my little crazy family. I love Steve Cruz. NM: Are there any stars you want to work with but haven’t? AF: I would like to work with Francois Sagat but he is not working anymore. Sometimes we chat on Skype. I would like to work with Spencer Reed again. NM: You seem angry in these videos. AF: I become a little aggressive but it is not like I want to kill the other person. I have directors on my back telling me things to do. I would like to be a little more romantic like when I did My Brother’s Hot Friend in pool, not a power fuck. NM: You worked with Michael Lucas before. AF: It was really tough. One shoot took about 12 hours to finish. NM: Do you stop for lunch? AF: Eating is the last thing at 7 pm. Michael makes a movie with a history then the sex scene is at the end. They make it in one day but two days would be better for the model if they split it in two. But look at the results.
