BIRTH: Santa Cruz, Manoel, legitimate son of Faustino Jose da Cunha, native of
this parish, and of Filisbella Joaquina da Trindade, native of Our Mother of
Light, both towns of this Mother Church, was born the fourth of December one
thousand eight hundred and twenty, and baptised on the seventeenth of the same
month, in this Mother Church of Santa Cruz da Graciosa, by Pedro Correa de
Mello, Vicar. God parents are Captain Antonio Fugaia de Athaide and his
daughter Maria Roza, natives of Sao Mateus Church of Villa de Praia Evora,
Source, Santa Cruz baptismal records, Graciosa, Azores
MARRIAGE: On the 27 day of July in the present year of 1842, in the morning,
in this Mother Church of Villa de Santa Cruz, on the island of Graciosa,
canonical banns were posted as determined by the Council of Trent in this
diocese without having discovered any matrimonial impediment in the archives
of this Matrix Church by the Reverend Ecclesiastical Judge, Manoel Antonio de
Mendonca, in the presence of Reverend Vicar Andre Maria PicanÃ§o Franco and
the witnesses who signed below and the priest of this Mother church, the
Reverend Curate Francisco Jose Medina who solemnly married in the church and
received for husband and wife with vows, Manuel da Cunha, legitimate son of
Faustino Jose da Cunha and his wife, Filisbella Joaquina da Trindade, and Dona
Maria Francisca da Saudade de Betencourt, legitimate daughter of Antonio de
Betancourt Vasconcelos and his wife, Dona Maria Mildes? (I think is is Emilia,

OBITUARY: Durango Herald 26 Jun 1920, Funeral Services for Frank Cunha Monday
A.M.at 10. "Monday morning at 10 o'clock Rev.L.K.Wells of the Presbyterian
church will conduct services at the Cunha home in memory of the late Frank
Cunha, the pioneer barber, who died yesterday at noon, following an operation
for relief from cancer of the stomach. Interment will be made at Greenmount
under the direction of Mortician Hood. The late Mr.Cunha, who opened the first
barber shop in this city, some forty years ago, was a native of Portugal, but a
staunch and ideal citizen of his adopted country. He is survived by his wife
and two daughters, Mrs.Will Galbreath of Del Norte and Mrs.Earl Faris of
Mancos, besides a number of grandchildren. Mr.and Mrs.Faris are in the city
comforting the stricken wife and mother, and Mr.and Mrs.Galbreath will arrive
this evening to attend the ceremonies. Two of their children, a son and a
married daughter, also are here for the services. Out of respect for the late
decedent the Strater hotel barber shop, owned by the deceased, has remained
closed since his death. The late Mr.Cunha enjoyed perhaps a larger
acquaintance with the traveling men making the basin than any other individual,
for for more than forty years he had been at the same stand."

BIOGRAPHY and RESEARCH NOTES from Annetta Cunha Boulden (some of this has been
proved incorrect):
His father was Manuel De Cunha Pacheco and he owned land on the island of
Graciosa, Azores.
According to my father, he was sort of a slave driver. All
his sons left home. My father was the youngest. The older boys, after coming
to America, had my father run away (he would have been about 17). They paid
his way in the steerage to cross the Atlantic. He was supposed to have landed
on the coast of New Hampshire (unlikely). He could not speak English, but as
far as I know he made his way to Durango, Colorado where his brothers Antonio
and Frank were running 4 or 5 barber shops. (unlikely, Frank did not arrive in
CO until after 1880) When he was 20 or so, he suffered callouses and corns on
his feet and toes from standing so long and he had to quit. Later in his life,
he thought as a result of this, he had to have 2 toes amputated because they
looked like they might become cancerous.
He went into the mountains around Delta and Telluride, CO. He saved his money
and followed the railroad into Green River, UT. He was running a tent saloon
when he met my mother. He gave it up because she did not approve. Green River
had the terminal at that time. Most of the time, he worked in the Round House,
putting his wages into stock cattle. He did this until he went to San Raphael
River to take up an abandoned spread. He lived there for eight years with his
wife and child (me). His brother, Frank, lived and died in Durango, CO.
Antonio left and went to Nevada and was interested in mining. I wrote to him
as a young girl for some time. But, after my mother died when I was seventeen,
I quit writing, of which I have always regretted. He seemed so intelligent and
kind, and I feel he could have helped me so much in a genealogical way. I
think he was my father's favorite brother. It has been said that his older
brother Manuel went to Brazil. John (Juan) went to Massachusetts. Only one of
his sisters ever came to America. She was Candida. She was married to Domingo
Mendonga in the Azores. They settled in Santa Clara, CA. They had two sons
named Joseph and Frank. I have written to both of them, but haven't been able
to get much information from them. Frank Cunha married Fannie Estelle Frost.
They had three children, Louise, Elizabeth, and Frank.

who lives on the way to the church, baptized solemnly and put the Holy Oils on
one child of the feminine sex, to whom he gave the name Francisca, who was
born at the eleventh hour of the night on the twentieth fourth day of the
month of February of the current year of one thousand eight hundred and sixty
one, legitimate daughter the first with this name, of Manuel da Cunha Pacheco,
farmar, and his woman, D. Maria Francisca de Soledade, received in the Main
Church of the Villa of Santa Cruz, ???? (I think it means they attended church
there) of this County, living in Farrojal?, paternal grandaughter of Faustino
Jose da Cunha and his woman, Felisbela Joaquina de Trindade, maternal
(grandaughter) of Antonio Bettencourt Vasconcellos and his woman, D. Maria de
Soledade, godfather the paternal grandfather, proprietor living in Charco
Velho, that I know be who he is. And to (I think to ensure the validity of the
document) this certificate of baptism, and after being read before the
Baptizing priest and the godfather, I'll sign for him, at his request, since
he can not read or write, the Treasurer of this church, Manuel Jose da
Esperanca. (Sorry But I can't make up much at the end, but is mainly just the
signatures of the Church's Treasurer, Manuel Jose da Esperanca, the Priest
Father Francisco de Paula Bettencourt e Mello and D. "Prebistero" Bettencourt
