I.
GENERAL MEMBERSHIP
1. The Philippine College of Physicians-Southern Mindanao Chapter is composed
of the following provinces: Davao del Norte, Davao Oriental, Davao del Sur,
Davao City, North Cotabato, and Maguindanao. There are six PCP-accredited
training institutions under our chapter namely:
a. 3 private hospitals
Davao Doctors Hospital (DDH)
San Pedro Hospital (SPH)
Brokenshire Hospital (BIHMI)
b. 3 government hospitals
Southern Philippines Medical Center
(SPMC)
Davao Regional Hospital (DRH)
Cotabato Regional Medical Center
(CRMH)
In 2012, Davao Medical School Foundation Hospital (a private hospital set up by the
Davao Medical School Foundation, the only medical school in the region ) submitted its
application for Internal Medicine Residency Training Program to the Accreditation
Committee. It received its first visit from the Accreditation Committee last March 15,
2014. The hospital still has to comply with some residency training requirements set by
the committee.
2. Presently there are 363 members classified as follows :
a. 136 fellows
b. 64 diplomates
c. 163 affiliates / members
3. There are 17 candidates for diplomates for induction during this year’s annual
convention in May, 2014.
4. All of these training institutions are involved in the activities / conferences of the
chapter. We had a total of 6 general membership meetings from 2013 to 2014.
II.
MEMBERSHIP BENEFITS
1. Group Insurance - This year, we renewed the group health insurance for our
members with coverage for death of P500, 000.00. The chapter contributes half
of the premium payment (P897.50) so the member needs to pay only the other
half. This health insurance is purely voluntary.
This year, more chapter
members (156) have agreed to take part in this program.
2. Calamity Fund - Each member is required to contribute P200.00 per year to the
calamity fund of the chapter. The calamity fund was set up a few years back to
generate funds which members can tap anytime in the event of a calamity to
minimize asking for donations from the members during these instances. Last
year, three flood victim members were given P5, 000.00 each as calamity
assistance.
This
year,
no
serious
calamity
hit
the
region.
Members (fellows, diplomates, and affiliates) can also avail of the one-time
disability and death benefits from the local chapter. This is on top of the benefits
from the PCP national.
III.
RESIDENCY TRAINING AND RESEARCH
1. Consultants and residents of the 6 accredited training programs (and also
members who are not affiliated to any particular training program) are required to
attend in the interhospital activities. This year, we had a total of 5 interhospital
conferences plus the traditional annual research contest among the residents of
the 6 training institutions. In addition to the quarterly scheduled activities for the
residency training programs, there were two additional chapter-initiated lectures.
10 CME units (total 90 CME units) were allotted for each activity. General
membership meetings are held every after the scheduled quarterly lectures.
Residents under the PCP Southern Mindanao Chapter ( the Southern Philippines
Medical Center team comprised by Dr Julie Ann Kristy Torres, Dr Aileen
Herceda, Dr Tara Nath Koirala and Dr Virgilio Dave Cania ) became
National Champion for the second straight year on May 7, 2013 (the first was on
May 8, 2012) during the PCP Annual Convention the PCP – Pfizer Quiz Bowl
Contest.

Just
this month, largely through the efforts of Research Committee Adviser
Dr Alisa Bernan who in addition to being an internist and cardiologist is also an
epidemiologist, the chapter has worked out the acquisition of a licensed statistics
software STATA 13 which can be used by the training hospitals for research purposes.
We have applied for a 5-user network license amounting to $1650. One software each
will be given to the 4 Davao City-based hospitals and the remaining one will be set up in
the PCP office for use by members in Tagum City and Cotabato City. With this, we are
confident that our residents would come up with better research outputs.

Starting January 2013, the Infectious Specialists’ Group of the chapter has come up with an
Infectious Medicine Review Program involving residents of the 6 training hospitals, and other
chapter members who are interested to attend. This is scheduled every third Friday of the
month at 5 pm. Three residents are set to lecture on Infectious Medicine topics every meeting
(based on Harrison’s Principles of Internal Medicine). Pretest and posttest are given every
meeting to assess the knowledge gained by the attendees. This activity is preparation for the
yearly RITE and the PSBIM examination. The chapter is still in the process of coming up with a
similar review program involving the other subspecialties.

IV.
MEMBERSHIP PARTICIPATION / PATIENT CARE / ADVOCACY
1. “No Approved Therapeutic Claim” Poster – For the fourth year now since the
time it was started by Past Chapter President Dr Bernard Chiew, the chapter has
reprinted its advocacy posters for distribution to new members and members
who need more posters.
2. Adopt-A-Site Watershed Project
a. PCP-SMC adopted an area equivalent to one (1) hectare located in Mt.
Talomo-Lipadas, Mt. Apo Natural Park, at P 6,000.00, per hectare per year
for a period of five (5) years, or in the total amount of Thirty Thousand Pesos
(30,000.00) payable in installment. This is our 3rd year.
3. Anti-Alcoholism Advocacy
a. PCP-SMC has had initial meetings with DECS and CHED for them to be
partners in this advocacy. We have come-up with a WHO-initiated
questionnaire for high school and college students so the chapter will have
baseline data on the knowledge and practices of students in relation to
alcohol use. These data will be used in future interventions (e.g. lectures
on alcoholism) to be conducted by PCP Chapter members.
b. The chapter has come up with the slogan “Hinay-hinay sa Tagay, Para
Atay Lipay-Lipay” (Slow Down with Alcohol Intake so the Liver Will Be
Happy) for car and office stickers.
c. We have a series of radio and television-based programs discussing the
evils of alcoholism featuring our PCP chapter members.
4. HERO Program
V.
INVOLVEMENT IN COMMUNITY
The chapter has an ongoing community-based project which was conceptualized during
the term of Past President Dr Romulo Uy in Bantacan, New Bataan, Compostela Valley
(ComVal), one of the areas badly hit by typhoon Pablo in December 2012. In
partnership with the local government, we were able to construct a health center to
replace the one which was destroyed by the typhoon. Our counterpart (building
materials plus autoclave and steel cabinet) amounted to about P300, 000. The
Memorandum of Agreement between the PCP-SMC and the local government of New
Bataan was signed on April 30, 2013 during the Board of Directors’ meeting. The
chapter promised to conduct regular health maintenance activities in the adopted
community. The first medical mission participated in by several PCP officers and
members plus other doctors from the Pediatrics and OB-Gynecology specialties, was
scheduled during the groundbreaking ceremony of the proposed health center on July
6, 2013. We had subsequent activities in the community last October 20, 2013 and
March 9, 2014, and we still have future activities lined-up. For these health
maintenance activities, we have assigned hospitals (two at a time) to spearhead
(e.g. SPMC and Davao Adventist Hospital, DDH and Community Health Development
Center or CHDC, SPH and Metro Davao Medical and Research Center) . Since at
present, Barangay Bantacan seems to have recovered from Pablo’s onslaught, the
chapter is looking into the possibility of adopting another disaster-ravaged community
which still needs help.
When typhoon Yolanda hit Leyte and Samar and other parts of the Visayas, some
chapter members partnered with the Catholic Church through the DADITAMA Mission
( involving the Dioceses of Davao, Digos, Tagum and Mati) last January 20 to 25, 2014.
The 27-vehicle caravan travelled for 6 days, transferring from one town to another
everyday. The target areas were the towns surrounding Tacloban City. While the
church workers worked on helping out the parishes reconstruct their churches and
chapels, the medical team attended to the typhoon victims who needed medical
attention.
To sustain these disaster-related projects, the chapter had the following fund-raising

In addition, the chapter also received donations and funds from some subspecialty
groups and private individuals. We also decided to forego the usual “lavish” Christmas
Party last year to minimize expenses and instead just held a simple get-together for all
members on November 23, 2013 at the conference room of San Pedro Hospital Medical
Arts Building.
