e from the Maestro
by Valentin Radu, Artistic Director & Conductor
Season 28 continues our tradition of excellence and brings you another
fabulous selection of extraordinary concerts by the three VoxAmaDeus
performing groups:
l
Vox Renaissance Consort returns with its traditional Renaissance Noël
and Renaissance Candlemas concerts and brings you back in time to the
glory of Old Europe, through lush costumes and instruments of the period,
and heavenly music of Italian, English and German masters, as well as
traditional carols.
l
Ama Deus Ensemble will enchant you with Mozart and Beethoven
in November (with yours truly conducting and playing on a Bösendorfer
Imperial Grand!), the traditional December holiday Messiahs on Baroque
instruments; the Bach B-Minor Mass on Palm Sunday and Good Friday;
“awesome” Americans—Gershwin, Copland, John Williams—in January;
and the Three B’s in May. The last two concerts will feature British virtuoso
pianist Peter Donohoe, back by popular demand!
l
Camerata Ama Deus brings you three exciting programs (spiced with
Maestro’s “live notes”): Bach and Mozart in September (with yours truly—
again—on the Bösendorfer Concert Grand), Vivaldi in October, and an
exciting mix of German and Venetian Baroque masters in April.
Mark your calendars and be part of Season 28!

Performing Groups
Vox Renaissance Consort,
founded by Maestro Radu
in 1987, features lushly
costumed, high-caliber
professional singers with
a small ensemble of
period instruments
performing enchanting
concerts of masterpieces from the High Renaissance of Old Europe.
“A warm and communicative sound...” Alan Krizan, The New York Times
“...the execution is rousing...” J.F. Weber, Fanfare Magazine
Ama Deus Ensemble
was founded in
1991. The group
performs the larger
works, both
orchestral and
vocal-symphonic.
Often appearing in
the Perelman
Theater at the
Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts, the ensemble offers programs of
Baroque and Classical masterworks by Bach, Handel, Vivaldi, Mozart,
Beethoven, Brahms and Verdi. Ama Deus Ensemble concerts feature
internationally renowned solo artists. Ama Deus Ensemble currently
records exclusively for VAD Classics. Earlier recordings on Sony Classic,
Time Warner, Polygram, Newport Classic, Lyrichord and ESX/Vox Classic
are also available.
4
“Exhilarating...” Kyle Schonberg, The Washington Post
Camerata Ama Deus chamber orchestra, founded in 2007, performs on
instruments appropriate for the Baroque or Classical period. Maestro
Radu introduces each work on the program with unscripted, lively “live
notes.” The concerts feature stellar soloists from within the group,
including Maestro Radu himself on piano and organ.
“...It’s nothing short of perfect for a concert performed on period
instruments...”
Michael Caruso, Chestnut Hill Local
“...both soloists and orchestra play with considerable verve.”
Robert Maxham, Fanfare Magazine
Valentin Radu has led numerous orchestras and
vocal ensembles in Europe and the U.S. He is
the founder, artistic director and conductor of all
VoxAmaDeus performing groups.
Maestro Radu holds doctoral and master’s
degrees from the Juilliard School and a Bachelor
of Music degree from the Bucharest Academy of
Music. In 1976 he founded and conducted
Juvenes Musici chamber orchestra (under the
auspices of the Bucharest Philharmonic). In
1980 he founded The Juilliard Bach Players
chamber orchestra and the Bach at Juilliard concert series at New York’s
Lincoln Center. Maestro Radu was awarded the Golden Apple by New York
City Mayor Rudolph Giuliani in 1997 and the Romanian Music Critics’
Association’s “Musician of the Year” prize in 1999. He was bestowed the title
of Honorary Citizen of the City of Bucharest in 2003, and in 2005 was
knighted by the President of his native Romania.
“[Radu] delivered the same combination of historical insight, energy and
unpredictable personal flair.” Michael Caruso, Chestnut Hill Local

Piano Concerto in f minor
Orchestral Suite No. 2
Violin Concerto No. 5
Piano Concerto No. 20
In addition to his vast trove of
sacred choral masterpieces, Bach
wrote magnificent instrumental works ranging
from his renowned Brandenburg concerti to
his delightful orchestral suites, one of which,
the Suite No. 2 featuring a solo flute, is being
performed in this program. Also, Bach
being a consummate organist and keyboardist,
composed solo concerti for one, two, three and
four keyboards with orchestra. The f minor is one
of his finest. Like Bach’s, Mozart’s amazing legacy
includes both vocal and instrumental masterpieces.
Of his twenty-seven piano concerti, the No. 20 stands
among Maestro’s favorites, and his soul-stirring
Violin Concerto No. 5 enchants the senses.

“Radu exploited inner colors in the string orchestra...The orchestral colors
behind the four soloists prompted solo work with strength and conviction.
No mystique about that.” Daniel Webster, The Philadelphia Inquirer
“Radu obtains the best of two worlds, drawing remarkably full and rich
sounds from his forces and yet maintaining rhythmic litheness and
textural (and textual) transparency.” James Altena, Fanfare Magazine
“[Brahms Requiem] is a disc to have...a new experience—which
is what a great performance should be. This disc and that

“First-rate vocalists...magical. The Vox concert was a jewel – a visit to a
