My friend and Editor in Chief of 27Stars, Flávia Amaral, told me that the camellias were symbol of the movement for the abolition of slavery in Brazil. The camellia flowers were symbol of rebellion and synonym for import and purity and have inspired me to create the international section of the magazine. The city of Sao Sebastiao of Rio de Janeiro was founded by Estacio de Sa in 1565. Its strategic position on the Brazilian coast created the development of its waterfront and commercial timber, and its fishing and sugar cane production, causing a rapid population growth. In the 18th century, the gold discovery of Minas Gerais, Rio de Janeiro, had established a bridge between the mines and Europe. At the end of this same century, the cultivation of coffee and the arrival of the Portuguese Royal family in 1808 gave a new injection to the city’s economy. This royalty also marked the arrival of gas lighting and public transport with animal traction. O Rio de Janeiro teve seu grande esplendor entre 1920 e 1950, quando turistas de várias partes do mundo, atraídos pelas suas belezas naturais e sua imagem romântica, vinham gastar dinheiro em seus cassinos Rio de Janeiro had its splendor between 1920 and 1950 when tourists from various parts of the world, attracted by its natural beauty and its romantic image, came to spend money in its casinos 11 B AHIA O INÍCIO DE UMA NAÇÃO Em 1960 a cidade deixou de ser capital do Brasil, passando o posto para Brasília. 12 In 1960 the city was no longer the capital of Brazil and the capital became Brasilia. From 1964 to 1985 there was a military government in Brazil. It was an era of dictatorship characterized by a lack of democracy, a great deal of censorship, repression and political persecution. With the end of the military rule in the country, the new constitution based on democratic principles was established in 1988. Today Rio de Janeiro is seen as the international capital of Brazil, effectively elected by citizens of the world. This beautiful city is blessed by the open arms of the Corcovado and will face the challenge in the upcoming years of being the center of global attention for the World Cup Soccer in 2014 and Summer Olympics in 2016. These important events promise to further promote the already famous “curves and shapes” of Rio : the mountains and the Carioca women famous for their swagger and voluptuousness. Among the 16 townships surveyed by the Fip Zap index, the homes in the Leblon neighborhood in the southern area of Rio have a higher cost per square meter than Rio de Janeiro. In January 2013 the average cost of $20,451 U.S. values almost 70% higher than the most expensive square meter in the city of São Paulo, in Vila Nova Conceição, whose value is around R $12,100. 13 O Leblon é um bairro onde cada vez mais o metro quadrado é valorizado, devido à sua localização privilegiada no sinuoso recorte da orla do Rio, ficando num canto especial, onde se beijam mar e montanha magistralmente. 14 The increasing square meter value in the Leblon neighborhood is due to its prime location on the edge of the winding river, a special corner where the sea and mountain masterfully meet. The fact is that the neighborhood has nowhere else to grow, hence the stratospheric values. So for those who cannot but would like to acquire a piece of this ground which is worth more than gold, one can only be nostalgic about revisiting the romantic history of this “ cool “ neighborhood. The name Leblon originates from the owner of the farm that was there in the mid 19th century. Frenchman Charles Le Bron was a whaler and owned the entire length of this southern Rio corner that at this time did not even exist yet. The urban population was concentrated in the city center and outskirts and extended all the way to Botafogo. To get to Leblon it was necessary to use a horse-drawn carriage to arrive to the furthermost neighborhood of Gavea, after which it was necessary to travel for a while on foot. The French Le Bron sold his land to the Portuguese merchant, Seixas José Magalhães, who owned a bag factory in downtown Rio and cultivated camellias on his farm, where he welcomed runaway slaves. Seixas was an abolitionist who was passionate about the history of Brazil. With the help of other famous abolitionists such as Jose‘ do Patrocino and Rui Barbosa, Seixas created Quilombo Leblon, while putting himself in danger all for a good cause and equality among men. The camellias cultivated in Leblon became a symbol of the abolitionist movement and were often seen on the dresses and hats of the ladies of the court, on gentleman’s lapels and in bouquets as well. They also adorned the gardens of homes to identify their owners as sympathetic to the abolition of slavery. The international brand most loved of the brazilian peoples, Chanel has the Camelia flower symbol Photo credits Chanel Tanto as camélias quanto os escravos foram trazidos para o Brasil, tirados de seu habitat natural. Jóia Chanel Chanel Jewel This symbol goes far beyond their beauty and fragrance. The camellias represented the flourishing life desired by slaves that suffered. ts weakness was identified with the fragility of the slaves. Both camellias were brought as slaves to Brazil and taken from their natural habitat. Both have undergone severe processes of adaptation to survive away from home. The slaves that came from Africa suffered terrible acts of inhumanity. They, camellias, came from Asia then to Europe. Accustomed to extreme cold, they needed the attention of the refugee slaves to suit the hot and humid tropical climate .Perhaps all this romantic appeal of camellias justifies the reasonable cost of 20 thousand dollars per square meter at Leblon. As the poet Rui Barbosa refers to camellias: “the most tender of all popular charities”. NÃO SE ENCONTRAM MAIS CAMÉLIAS NO CARO BAIRRO DO LEBLON. NELE, O LUGAR MAIS POPULAR E ACESSÍVEL É A PRAIA. Camellias are not easy to find nowadays and the most affordable aspect of Leblon is the beach. 16 17 27STARS SUGESTÃO - 10 Dias de Férias no Rio 27STARS SUGGESTION - 10 Holidays days in Rio Camila Mattos/DelBianco Travel Experience Camila Mattos/DelBianco Travel Experience 1. Quando há a mudança do destilado ela ganha outros nomes, por exemplo: se for usado Vodka, é Caipiroska e se for Rum chama-se Caipiríssima The lounge, Bar dos Descasados, was centuries past the slave quarters of the Guimarães Mansion, yet today, offers a Bohemian-Boutique setting to enjoy drinks and light appetizers. As everyone knows, rum, also known as “drip”, was brought up with the slaves of the Captaincy of São Vicente, thanks to the resourcefulness of the royal court. Some sources say that it was discovered by chance: during the process of manufacturing molasses, the steam produced in the fermentation condensed and dripped from the ceiling, hence the derivation of the name drip. Caipirinha has several different versions; by changing the lemon, strawberry, pineapple, kiwi, lychee, cashew or mixing all fruit. You can also change the distillate, but in this case it will no longer be a Caipirinha. A change of distillate also modifies the name of the drink, for example: if Vodka is used, it becomes a Caipiroska and if Rum is used, it’s called a Caipiríssima. Costa Verde (Green Coast) is the name given to a strip of land that runs from the southern coast of Rio de Janeiro to the north coast of São Paulo. It encompasses the cities of Mangalore, Angra dos Reis and Paraty, in Rio de Janeiro and Ubatuba, Caraguatatuba, São Sebastião and Ilhabela Sao Paulo. The name derives from the expressive and forceful presence in this part of the Atlantic off the Brazilian coast. The sea and mountain display an incomparable beauty and lie in perfect harmony with the unique historical heritage and generous hospitality. A diversão é garantida! 34 The natural beauty of Costa Verde is endless, with the intense blue color of the sea, in addition to the exuberance of green hues of the Atlantic Forest, with over an infinite amount of island paradises. Costa Verde is perfect for water sports, for deep sea fishing and also for leisurely boating. The fun is guaranteed! Paraty is one of the towns in the Serra do Mar region which UNESCO has declared a World Heritage Site. It is known internationally for its extensive historical and cultural heritage. Mansions from the colonial period add to the charm of the streets of Stone Town. In the surroundings of this beautiful architecture there are hundreds of beaches and islands with waterfalls and other ecological treasures. A little further than 25km from Parati, closer to the beaches of Trinidad and Sono towards São Paulo, there is a very special and exclusive place called “Condo Orange”, designed in the early 1970s in a flat plain between the mountains and sea. Condo Orange is like a little piece of paradise on earth with its four beautiful beaches, plus a complete infrastructure: golf course, clubhouse with swimming pools, restaurants and tennis courts, helipad, medical center, generator systems for possible power outages applicants in the region, plus a marina with a considerable area of navigation. 35 Photo Credits Relais Casa Turquesa Photo Credits Cssa Turquesa Photo Credits Casa Turquesa Casa Turquesa, em Parati, um charmoso e romântico hotel na Costa In Parati, Hotel Casa Turquesa’s Charm and romantic in the cost O grande diferencial de Laranjeiras é o sossego, devido à exclusividade do lugar. 36 A wonderful characteristic of Orange is its peace and tranquility due to its restrictive nature. Its plots are between 1,000 and 2,000 square meters, with luxurious and comfortable homes which are quite far apart from each other. The social pattern of their regular customers is AAA, spending their sunny summers and springs there, glamorous and irresistible, where examples of elegance and good taste are too ostentatious. There it is possible to isolate oneself from the world under the care of an efficient and discreet security. The mentality is luxury prioritizing comfort without exhibitionism. The price of the local real estate can reach 5 million dollars and rents are quoted in U.S. dollars with daily rates during high season reaching up to U.S. $ 2500. This luxury accommodation is not for everyone’s wallet but for those who can afford a place in paradise, this is it! 40 Not everything that glitters is gold, say the old prospectors who, because of their greed and ignorance, mistook pyrite for gold. Golden and shiny, pyrite is a mineral found in crystal form, very bright and brittle, while the glitter of gold is not very intense in its raw state, is rarely found in crystal form and is extremely malleable. Hence the nickname for pyrite is a “fool’s gold”. Gold is not only used in jewelry or as a commodity exchange. It can also be used to perform critical functions in computers, internet calling, spaceships, reaction engines in aviation, and many other products. This extraordinary metal can be found in its “white” version which is worshiped by rappers as “bling bling”, which is nothing more than gold alloys with other white metals such as silver, palladium or nickel. Another name linked to gold emerged during the heyday of mining in the country, between the 17th and 18th centuries. The term “saint of hollow wood” began to be used by the miners who hid the precious metal inside hollow wooden saints. So driblavam charging the 20% tax that the Portuguese Crown charged of all precious metals mined in Brazil. The expression used to designate false people continues to be used today. Atualmente, Bahia e Pernambuco, no nordeste do Brasil, produzem uvas internacionais. 48 More and more we are able to produce wines of exceptional quality, winning several competitions abroad. Particularly in the spumante and sparkling wine category, the results have been quite satisfying and a great source of pride for all Brazilians. With the arrival of Portuguese settlers in the sixteenth century, arose the cultivation of the vine in various regions of Brazil. From the 1960s, Italian grape growing took place in the semi-arid region “Vale do Sub-Médio Sao Francisco”. This marks the beginning of the rapidly expanding tropical viticulture in Brazil, with the consolidation of the northern region of Parana in 1970 and the regions of northwest Sao Paulo and northern Minas Gerais in 1980. Since 1990, several new wine growing regions have emerged. Currently, international grapes are being cultivated in Bahia and Pernambuco in northeastern Brazil. Since 1990, several new wine growing regions have emerged. Currently, international grapes are being cultivated in Bahia and Pernambuco in northeastern Brazil. The midwest region is also a stage for experimental production of wine grapes. The mountains of the Pirineus is one of the first areas of clearing? “desbravamento” the winery region. The southern region of Brazil is the largest producer of wines, due to its European colonization, as well as its colder climate in winter and hot in summer which provides relief. One of the states that produces wines of excellent quality with French grapes (Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay) is Parana. The climate and geography of Santa Catarina is like no other state in the country, with one of the lowest temperatures during the year. In this state, some areas of grape production take place at elevations higher than a thousand feet and can produce white and red wines which are very structured and intriguing. Santa Catarina has also produced the first “ice wine” of Latin America. The Acavitis is an association that brings together all the wineries of Santa Catarina; their wines are exclusively produced from Vitis vinifera grapes. The owner of the Italian Agency Aria Advertasing has cured the global marketing WWF, in they interview, he’s telling us his experience with Brazil. Michele uses for advertising campaigns of his international customers, nature scenarios in Brazilian. INTERVIEW ☑ AS: Michele tell me about your experience in Brazil, especially your relationship with nature in this land so full of resources, wide open spaces and beautiful people. Tell us about the interaction with fashion and your relationship with the beauty of Brazilian women often required for your advertising campaigns. ☑ M.P. : Yes, I had the good fortune of being able to work in Brazil for many years, when the country still had a very complicated situation, with a lot of corruption and very little control of its territory, especially on the Amazon Basin, for years the prey of the large oil and wood manufacturing companies. Going back there after a few years, I noticed many changes in Brazil, especially with the election of President Lula who has contributed to the rebirth of this land. I found that the people were much more aware of seeking harmonious solutions to save their natural heritage which focuses mainly on the Amazon basin. 54 So much so that this year, given our role for some time now as WWF’s advertising agency, we will devote a great deal of attention in observing and appreciating all the initiatives aimed at the development of the Amazon territory. Even in light of the fact that this year Brazil will have a huge amount of media attention due to the World Cup celebration. It will be the perfect stage for the appreciation of the positive and negative aspects of this nation. I like the country of Brazil so much; it is very diverse, very large, and quite suitable for the work that I do in fashion, as well as for the environment. It has been one of my preferred places for its natural landscape beauty, and especially for its beautiful women who are some of the most famous models in the world. “ ... I’ve always been a friend of Brazil and its people.I hope that in the future I may have more exchange opportunities with Brazil Because I have always thought of it as my second home....” 55 M ATO GROSSO A POESIA DO PANTANAL THE POETRY OF PANTANAL Ph.D. Fabiana Filardi [email protected] 56 57 Rico na fauna, no pantanal existem inúmeras espécies de aves. Rich in wildlife, in Pantanal there are numerous different species of birds. 58 Poetry is “the art of creating images, suggest emotions through a language that combine sounds, rhythms and significances” and the Brazilian Pantanal, the smallest biome of the country (1.76% of Brazil’s territory), has sounds, rhythms and significances that reflect the poetry of nature. The Pantanal is a floodplain with relief ranging between 80-150 meters, inserted in the central part of the Upper Paraguay River Basin in the states of Mato Grosso and Mato Grosso do Sul. This geographical depression is surrounded by plateaus that have altitudes between 2001000 meters and the water that comes from the high parts, as well as the great rainfall in the headwaters of the rivers flow into the plain causing the floods. As it is not possible to drain all accumulated water from the Paraguay River, it spreads out and covers continuously large tracts toward a natural outlet, which occurs from its encounter with the Paraná River, which flows into the Prata River reaching the Atlantic Ocean. The rainy season begins between November and December, extending until March, and up to 2/3 of the Pantanal area might remain flooded through the month of May. So is the pulse of the waters which dictates the rhythm of life in the Pantanal, which is dynamic, complex and delicate. The Pantanal biome is one of the largest continuous moist extensions of the planet and presents exuberant natural beauty, with direct influence of three other Brazilian biomes: Amazon, Cerrado and Atlantic Forest, in addition to strong influence of vegetation known as Chaco, present in northern Paraguay and eastern Bolivia and structurally very similar to the Brazilian Caatinga. The greater part of the territory of the Pantanal is covered by non-forest formations (about 80%) that form a mosaic of vegetation according to the proportion between the presence of species of trees and of species of herbs. For example, the vegetation type of the “cerrado sensu stricto” (savanna) and type of the “campo limpo” (grassland), are extremes of vegetation in relation to the dominance of trees and shrubs and subshrubs and herbs, respectively. On the other hand, forests formations, namely, that have trees in a greater proportion and form canopy, in the Pantanal occupies few extensions (about 5%). The amplitude of the occurrence of more open vegetation is related to the very rich fauna of the Pantanal. Threatened species in other regions of Brazil can maintain large populations in this biome, such as the “tuiuiú” (Jabiru mycteria), bird symbol of Pantanal. Specific studies have cataloged the presence of 263 species of fishes, 41 species of amphibians, 113 species of reptiles, 463 species of birds and 132 species of mammals native of the biome. The ability to transform destructive practices in sustainable forms of production also reflects the dynamism of the Brazilian Pantanal: the nature presents unique and insurmountable conditions and the man adapts himself to the strength and to the rhythm of the Pantanal for obtaining prosperity with significance, with beauty and poetry!
