A exposição individual de Darío Escobar (Cidade da Guatemala, 1971) a ser
realizada na Casa Triângulo, em São Paulo, se intitula “Composições”. Esta é a
primeira exposição do artista na galeria e a segunda individual dele na cidade.
A pesquisa artística de Darío Escobar se desenvolve a partir de atos escultóricos
e instalativos dados a partir da apropriação de objetos industriais. No decorrer de
sua trajetória de mais de quinze anos, o artista já trabalhou em diálogo com
tradições visuais tão diversas como o “barroco guatemalteco”, carcaças de carros
acidentados e objetos vistos como símbolos do consumismo. Sua operação
como artista se dá a partir da seleção dessas peças e reconfiguração das
mesmas a partir de ações como a justaposição e repetição, fragmentação e corte
de materiais e uma reflexão sobre como instalá-los dentro do espaço expositivo.
Em “Composições”, dando prosseguimento a essa investigação, o artista
apresenta trabalhos inéditos no Brasil que propõe distintas possibilidades
compositivas a partir da apropriação e aproximação de elementos díspares. Nas
séries “Construção geométrica” e “Construção modular”, Escobar recodifica a
tradição de se pintar as traseiras de caminhões na Guatemala, e cria novos
padrões que convidam o espectador a abri-las e fruir suas distintas
configurações. A pesquisa formal a partir da bidimensionalidade também é
perceptível nas suas “Composições de óleo de motor”, onde, também se
utilizando de um material não-convencional, o artista explora as possibilidades do
papel e do desenho.
Quanto à tridimensionalidade, na série “Natureza-morta”, o artista explora formas
de apresentar objetos advindos da indústria do esporte, como as bolas de
basquete, ainda assépticos e distante do seu uso pelo corpo humano. Já em
“Equilíbrio”, há uma tensão tanto do material, quanto dos elementos citados pelo
artista: de um lado, as placas de metal remetem às esculturas minimalistas de
Carl Andre, do outro, sustentando o seu peso, o vidro se faz presente a partir dos
famosos copos americanos comercializados em São Paulo desde 1940 e já
alçados a símbolos do design brasileiro.
Além desse trabalhos, em diálogo com este pensamento escultórico que
compõem a partir da geometria inerente aos objetos banais, serão apresentados
trabalhos novos que serão desenvolvidos a partir do encontro entre Darío
Escobar e as mercadorias dos mercados populares de São Paulo. Essas
composições visam, portanto, estabelecer outras conversas diretas com a cultura
visual do Brasil, do mesmo modo que o artista responde diariamente aos objetos
industriais utilizados na Guatemala.

2010. Entre as exposições coletivas podemos mencionar: “Fútbol: the beautiful

Raphael Fonseca: vive e trabalha no Rio de Janeiro. Trabalha como crítico,
curador e historiador da arte. Recebeu o Prêmio Marcantônio Vilaça de curadoria
(2015). Doutorando em Crítica e História da Arte (UERJ). Professor do Colégio
Pedro II. Escreve periodicamente para as revistas Art Nexus e DasArtes. Como
curador de exposições e mostras de cinema, destaque para “Quando o tempo
aperta” (Palácio das Artes, Belo Horizonte e Museu Histórico Nacional, Rio de
Janeiro, 2016); “Derek Jarman – cinema é liberdade” (Caixa Cultural Recife,
2014); “Água mole, pedra dura” (I Bienal do Barro, Caruaru, PE, 2014); “Deslize

The solo exhibition by Dario Escobar (Guatemala City, 1971) to be realized at
Casa Triângulo, Sao Paulo, is entitled “Composições” [Compositions]. This is the
artist’s first exhibition at the gallery and his second solo show in the city.
Dario Escobar’s artistic research develops from sculptural and installation acts
started with the appropriation of industrial objects. Throughout a path of over
fifteen years, the artist has already worked in dialogue with visual traditions as
diverse as the Guatemalan baroque, the skin of broken cars and objects seen as
symbols of consumerism. His operation as an artist happens from the selection of
those pieces and their reconfiguration through actions like juxtaposition and
repetition, fragmentation and cut of materials, and a reflection on how to install
them inside the exhibition space.
In “Composition”, continuing this investigation, the artist presents new works in
Brazil, which propose multiple possibilities of composition through the
appropriation and approximation of dissimilar elements. In the series “Geometric
construction” and “Modular construction”, Escobar recodes the tradition of
painting the back of trucks in Guatemala, creating new patterns that invite the
spectator to open them up and enjoy their distinct configurations. The formal
research starting with the two-dimensional is also perceptible in his “Motor oil
compositions”, in which also using a non-conventional material the artist explores
the possibilities of paper and drawing.
Regarding the three-dimensional, in the series “Still-life” the artist explores ways
of presenting objects from the sports industry, like basketballs, still aseptic and
distant from its use by the human body. In “Balance” there is a tension of the
material as well as of the elements mentioned by the artist: on one hand the metal
sheets recall the minimalist sculptures of Carl Andre, on the other hand,
sustaining its weight, the glass is present in the famous American glasses
commercialized in Sao Paulo since 1940 and already elevated to symbols of
Brazilian design.
Besides those works, in dialogue with this sculptural thought that composes
through the geometry inherent to ordinary objects, there will be presented new
works which will be developed through the meeting between Dario Escobar and
the commodities from the popular markets in Sao Paulo. Therefore, these
compositions aim to establish other direct conversations with the Brazilian visual
culture, in the same way the artist replies everyday to the industrialized objects
used in Guatemala.
