Brief announcements and upcoming events * CNIA meetings are held the second Monday of every month at 7:00pm at the Community Center, 177 Estoria St. HP meetings are normally held on the first Monday of the month at 7 p.m. All are welcome to attend. Brainstorming: Everyone wrote words describing their park 3. Writing One-Word Descriptions: Going around the group, Pat requested everyone’s words, noting them on sticky notes stuck to a poster board. Set Priorities. Each member indicated by placing marks on the sticky notes, which items were a priority for describing their goal for the park. Everyone had 3 votes. See table. 4. Discussed and elaborated on several words. “Green” included landscaping and sustainability. “Event-friendly” meant a staging area that could be a lawn, not a hard surface like a plaza or deck. A “Shade Structure” could include “Picnicking” and “Electricity” and “Multi-Purpose”. “Multi-Purpose” grouped with “Maximize”, Multiple Entrances”, and “Optimize”. 5. There are so many wonderful volunteers in our community and it was great to hear about the accomplishments of the Grant Park Conservancy. In SEABAland, we believe that the accomplishments in our community directly impact our businesses. Thanks to the Grant Park Conservancy for keeping our community beautiful and a desirable place to do business! Our next Soiree will be held on June 16, 2011 from 5:30 p.m. until 7:15 p.m. at AGAVE! This has historically been one of the best events CABBAGETOWN NEIGHBOR of the year. Come enjoy some eats and drinks and meet other business owners and entrepreneurs in the neighborhood. This is where deals get started, so don’t forget your business cards! On June 31, 2011, Zoo Atlanta will host our quarterly SEABA business luncheon from noon to 1:15. CABBAGETOWN NEIGHBOR M AY 2011 PAG E 7 APRIL & MAY CRIME REPORT 1280 Caroline St NE 4/18/2011 (19:20-19:41) Parking lot By Jiri Vala 2011 Nissan Rogue 177 Estoria St SE 5/12/2011 (11:00-14:00) Taken: Laptop w/bag Victim advised someone took listed property from her backpack at location (place of employment) while she was away. Victim stated there were 8 other co-workers there at the time, but she is unsure who took it. Taken: I-pad Someone broke out rear driver’s side window and stole listed items. 1210 Caroline St NE 4/16/2011 (17:45-17:50) Business – Caribou Coffee Victim: W/F, 23 YOA, lives on Jackson St in Atlanta Weapon: Physical force Victim: B/M, 21 YOA, works security at location Listed as commercial on pull. Police saw arrestee (carrying listed property) run out of listed location followed by witness. Witness grabbed arrestee and arrestee punched him in the chest. Witness then yelled to police that arrestee had just robbed someone. Arrestee ran from location and police caught up with him a short distance later. While arrestee attempted to elude police he knocked over and punched two bystanders. Police administered O.C spray to subdue arrestee after he refused to comply. Arrestee was treated on scene by police with water and also EMS. Victim then arrived on scene and advised arrestee snatched her laptop from her lap while at location. She stated she held on to it as long as she could, but arrestee kept shaking it back and forth until she lost her grip. No injuries were reported by witness or bystanders. Weapon: Gun Taken: Laptop Victim advised he was notified by a cashier that 3 B/M’s were possibly shoplifting. Victim stated he checked the males receipt and all were cooperative, but the suspect. Victim stated the suspect pulled out a gun and told him if he came outside he would blast him. Victim advised video surveillance possibly caught incident. Arrestee: B/M, Antavious Monds, 19 YOA, lives in Decatur, GA Suspect: B/M Someone pulled the screen back on the front security door, entered location and stole listed property. An audible alarm also came up shortly after the prowler call and police found the front window to location broken. Witness advised she saw arrestee in the backyard of her neighbors house and then on the front porch. Witness stated she decided to canvass the area and noticed arrestee jump in the bushes after she saw him. Police located suspect a block from incident location. Witness positively identified arrestee as the individual she saw at location. Victim responded and advised nothing was taken. Can you feel the excitement? The 9th Annual Chomp and Stomp Chili Cook Off and Festival is just around the corner. For those of you new to the neighborhood, Chomp and Stomp is a party, race, chili cook off, artfest, and folk music all wrapped up into 2 parks and 5 streets. It has been hailed by Creative Loafing as the best intown hipster hootenanny. This is a complete twohour, hands-on class that will give you the basics of food preservation using the most popular method: water-bath canning. The class will prepare two kinds of the most popular canning products. Selections will draw from fruit, tomato and pickle recipes. Students will leave with a notebook of the standards of canning along with recipes of the products canned and a jar of each product. All supplies are included. $45.00 per class. And did you know there’s seasonal bounty ready to can all year long? Lyn Deardorff (Cabbagetown resident) has over thirty years experience in canning. She holds a Serve-Safe Food Safety Certificate and a Food Preservation Certificate from the National Food Preservation Center based at the University of Georgia. CABBAGETOWN PROM 2011 Cabbagetown class of 2011, are you ready to dance? Your local prom committee is working hard to provide you the prom you always wanted. Where the dress doesn’t matter and anything goes. The party where expectations are low for the décor but the punch will be spiked. We have rented out our local Cabbagetown Community Center for June 25th beginning at 7:00pm. Tickets are $10.00 per person. Bring your fellow classmates. Doors opened to freshmen and seniors alike. Beer, Punch, and and snacks will be provided but feel free to BYOB. We all know where the night will end so no hotel keys needed. We will party like it’s 1999, 1970,1980, and 2001. I think you get the picture. Speaking of pictures, make sure you are ready for that close up. Prom pictures will be taken at the door. So practice those Dance moves and get ready to do the Electric Slide. I had mentioned to him how I wanted to make a garden box but didn’t have a saw and if I could borrow one from him. The next week I came home to find a box made for me in the back yard. It was a great and grand gesture. He was born and raised in cabbagetown. His stepfather Grady recently past away and he came to stay with his mother Cathy to keep her company for awhile. He shares wonderful stories with us of how Cabbagetown used to be. Andy and his mother Cathy are wonderful people I would love it if you mentioned his nice neighbor gesture. He’s a dog in training! BIO: Mauricio is adopted, a Christmas present from David. It took 3 months to house train him.. Very loving and playful, sometimes too much. He’s a good warning system, I know when the mail is here. He knows time, sitting at the front door he doggies going for their morning walks before work and after work. He goes on neighborhood walks with Auntie Karen (he has a social life) and knows his way to the Esther-Peachy Lefevre Park. Miss Lucy (Doberman) is his girlfriend, and they made a You Tube video! Here is some of the things we are looking for: Pictures – Any interesting pictures taken in the neighborhood. Pictures of your pets, children, friends, public art, happenings, events, what you do in your back yard, etc. Calendar Events and Announcements – Anything happening in or around Cabbagetown, anything happening in Atlanta that you think would be interesting to the community or anything Cabbagetown or Cabbagetown resident related. Articles – Would you like to write about something happening in the neighborhood, about an interesting person in the neighborhood, about neighborhood history? Send it to me. Like to write, but need ideas about what to write about. Let me know, I have plenty of ideas. Cabbagetown Profiles – Are you or do you know a neighbor with an interesting job, hobby, volunteer activity, lifestyle, etc.?
