County-level submissions are in the process of being evaluated. We will let you know if
Eastvalley has any winners at that level, in the next newsletter. Thank you, parents, for supporting your children in the arts!

From the Principal
December 2008
Dear Eastvalley Families,
As we approach the busy holiday season, I want to take this time to thank each and every one of you for a
wonderful first half of our school year. Your students are working hard every day to learn and the teachers are
working to ensure that they are going to meet (hopefully exceed!) standards for their grade level! Your support for the teachers/staff and for me personally has made this year so rewarding for all of us. Have a wonderful holiday season with your family whether you celebrate Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, Los Posada, another holiday or any combination of the holidays! Be safe and we’ll see you back on Tuesday, January 6th!
Here are a few tips for reducing holiday stress…I’m sure we can all use these! Children's Hospital Boston
psychiatrist Stuart Goldman, MD, offers the following tips and advice to help children and parents enjoy
healthy, happy holidays:
SHOPPING
Set realistic expectations for holiday shopping and do so well in advance of the day presents will be opened.
Parents and children often mistake the best holidays with those in which they give or receive the most presents.
Addressing this early helps take the pressure off everyone.
SCHOOL VACATION
Add a little structure to your child's school vacation. Plan activities, such as playing board games, going to the
movies or sledding outside. Consider scheduling activities the whole family can participate in together.
GET OUTDOORS
Keep children active. The winter brings less daylight, which can lead to more inside time and less physical activity. Try to get outdoors, even if only for a little while.
BEDTIME
Make sure children get plenty of sleep. Holiday time often begets later bedtimes. Make sure you get your child
gets back on his regular sleep schedule before going back to school.
HEALTHY EATING
Give children sugary treats in moderation. Excessive sugar is believed by some to cause hyperactivity, irritability and sleeplessness, and it certainly does little good.
TRADITIONS
Consider establishing special holiday traditions that children can look forward to year after year. This gives
them something to focus on other than presents
TALK
Be mindful of past events, like the death of a loved one or a divorce in the family that may resurface around
the holidays. Address these changes in advance, explaining that the holidays will be different and that it's okay
to express feelings about it.
HAPPY HOLIDAYS TO YOU AND YOUR LOVED ONES!!!!

Mantenha as crianças ativas.
Estes acontecimentos as
vezes voltam em pensamento na época dos feriados. Fale com sua criança, explique que neste feriado vai ser
diferente, e que é normal expressar seus sentimentos.
FELIZ FESTAS PARA VOCÉ E TODA SUA FAMÍLIA!

Eastvalley Giving Tree
In the past, our school has extended a helping hand to some of our families during the holidays.
Please consider helping us again this holiday season to provide assistance to those less fortunate
in our own school community. We are asking for donations in one of the following forms:
Gift cards or Gift Certificates
The dollar amount is at your discretion, but please choose a store that offers a variety of items or is targeted to
children, (e.g. Target, Wal-mart, Toys-R-Us, even Kroger or Publix).
Monetary Donations
If you don’t have time to pick up a gift card, we welcome your dollar donations in the form of
a check, or money order. (Please do not send cash). All monetary donations will be used to
purchase gift certificates/gift cards. Please make checks payable to Eastvalley PTA, and indicate on your envelope that the donation is for the “Holiday Giving Tree”.
Please have your child bring your donation to the main office at school and drop it into the box marked
“Holiday Gift Fund”. At that time, a star ornament will be placed on the Holiday Giving Tree in the school
lobby with your family name on it. Donations will be accepted until Monday, December 16th. The PTA Outreach Committee and the school counselors thank you for any help you can provide.
Dear Parents,
It is never too early for students to start learning about different careers. We are looking for parents who would
like to come to the school and talk about their career. Our goal is to improve career awareness among our students. This will give us the chance to get to know you, as well as, allow the students the opportunity to learn
all about your career field. This will also broaden the scope of our students’ knowledge of occupations and
various work environments.
If you would like to donate a portion of your workday, we would love to learn about your career. Please complete this form and return it to the school with your child by January 12, 2009.
Thanks for getting involved in our children’s future…..today!

December 2008
During the past three weeks, Eastvalley has participated in our annual United Way campaign. This year
we raised our financial goal for faculty/staff participation and we gave generously, far surpassing our
goal. In addition, the students at Eastvalley raised $263.03 (one penny at a time) during the “Red Ribbon
Penny Drive”. We were delighted that this money was donated to our United Way fund. Also, our
teachers and students participated in “Pajama Day for United Way”, and raised $400.46 (one dollar at a
time). This was great fun for everyone who participated and we were so proud of the generous response.
We know this money will greatly benefit our community by helping worthy organizations, as well as
help alleviate the needs of many individuals, especially children.
We also had a great response from our local merchants. So many of them are supporters of United Way,
and wished to encourage our efforts with small incentive gifts and gift certificates. When you are out
shopping during the holiday season and new year, hopefully you will return the favor by supporting them
and thanking them as you shop at their businesses. (Please tell them you are from the Eastvalley Elementary community.)
We appreciate the encouragement and support of our efforts by the following stores (near our school):
All Star Pizza, Applebee's, Atlanta Bread Company, Bead Dreams, Bella Decor, Big Peach Running
Company, Bookmiser, Bruster's, Cafe de Paris, Cajun Meat Company, California Pizza Kitchen, Capozzi's New York Deli, Casabella, Chick-fil-A, Chili's Restaurant, Cookies, Curves, Dairy Queen, Dave
and Buster's, Dinner A'Fare, Exceptional Embroidery and Gifts, Firehouse Subs, Flying Biscuit Cafe,
Frameworks Gallery, Frankie's Italian Restaurant, Fresh Market, Goldberg's Deli, Harry's Whole Foods,
Home Depot, Honeybaked Ham, Houlihan's, Invites, Just Fitness, Krispy Kreme, Kroger(Roswell Road),
la Madeleine, Lili Nails, Marietta Diner, Massage Envy, Mellow Mushroom (Johnson Ferry), Panera
Bread, Publix (Johnson Ferry), Saporito's Pizza/Italian, School Box, Starbucks Coffee Company
(Johnson Ferry), Subway (Lower Roswell), The Coffee Park, Thompson's Frame and
Gallery, Walmart (Big Chicken) and Williamson Bros. Bar-B-Q.
Thanks to everyone for the great job. United, we did it!

Dear Eastvalley Students, Staff, and Parents,
We hope that everyone has a wonderful Thanksgiving Holiday and enjoyed some special time with family and
friends during the break. We at Eastvalley are so blessed to be a part of such a special group of teachers, staff
and families. There are some many things we are thankful for but here are a few we would like to mention.
We would like to thank everyone for his or her participation in the Silent Auction. Special thanks to those
families that donated items for sale and gathered items for the class raffle baskets. The Auction was a big success. Kudos to Paddy Phillpotts and her committee!
We would also like to thank the Teachers for their contributions to the raffles during Friends and Family
Luncheon. The students are really looking forward to the special events with their teachers. The lunch was
fun, and it is always so nice to see all the parents, grandparents and special friends at school. Great job Food
Dude and the cafeteria staff on the yummy Thanksgiving lunches! We are very grateful for all that you do for
us.
Lastly, we would like to thank all the families that contributed to the Outreach Food Drive.
This time of year really starts to move by fast and before we know it the Winter Break will be here. The last
day of school is December 19th and the students return on January 6th.
We are still collecting donations for our EV Giving Tree. All donations are tax-deductible, and every penny
goes directly to Eastvalley. We have some great projects for school improvements in the works.
Wishing all of you a happy and peaceful Holiday Season.
Your Eastvalley PTA Co-Presidents
Marlene Kassens and Tammy Feilmeier
On October 27th and 28th, all of the students in 1st and 4th grades were screened for potential hearing and vision difficulties, which may impact learning ability. Here at Eastvalley, we have a strong tradition of supportive parents who are generous with their time and energy, helping to make our screening an efficient success.
This year, close to 200 students were tested. Students who did not pass the initial screening were retested on
November 3rd. If the second screening revealed possible problems, a parent notification letter with instructions
was mailed home. It is very important that the student receive a follow-up examination, which will be at no
cost. Working together, we can give the students of Eastvalley the edge for success. A huge thank you to the
parent volunteers who helped make this happen. In addition, thank you to Kroger, who provided snacks
throughout the screening. Finally, an enormous thank you to our testers: Deborah McCoy, Krissy Graba,
Gaye Maggart, Pam Mullen, and Ashley Staley. Each and every one of you was critical in this worthwhile
cause.

Marlene Kassens e Tammy Feilmeir
Many thanks to all the teachers, staff, parents and kids who helped the Silent Auction thrive this year despite
our economy! We are grateful for all who donated their time, talents and treasure to help us raise close to
$7,000.00. We appreciate all who generously donated items to either the Silent or Live Auction. All of the
funds raised will go towards educational programs for our students at Eastvalley.
Many thanksPatricia Drives (Phillpotts)

“RED RIBBON WEEK” Recap….
Thanks to all of the students and staff for making the week a huge success.
The students especially enjoyed the Penny Drive using the theme “Drugs Don’t Make Cents” as they watched
their pennies “grow” that had been collected in the jars in the cafeteria. It was such a wonderful outpouring of
“kindness” from students, as well as “staff” dropping in money. A total of $263.03 was collected and was
given to United Way.
Loraine James, Counselor had been stressing “Drug Awareness” during her time with students. She provided
morning announcements as well as a lottery drawing using tickets she has previously given to each student
from each grade level and given a prize.
A “special thanks” to the following people that assisted me in counting out ribbons; decorating; counting pennies; and distribution of items to teachers: Debbie Davis, Kristina Davis, Jordan Davis, Jim Jordan and Anne
Fitzpatrick!
We feel it is never too early to start drug-prevention programs and seem to more effective if they are begun in
elementary school. Data suggests that the early use of alcohol, tobacco, and marijuana by children of elementary-school age is associated with greatly increased odds of later use. Parents of elementary school-aged children can be the best front-line prevention specialists.
We urge parents to continue stressing the important message daily to their children of saying “NO TO
DRUGS.”
Peggy Jordan
Red Ribbon Week Chairperson

December 2008
Mrs. Janice Ritt, Media Specialist
Mrs. Cindy Moran, Media Paraprofessional
Eastvalley Reading Club EVRC
The Eastvalley Reading Club has set a goal of reading 19,000 points this year. Eastvalley has earned
8,500 points year to date. It would be wonderful if each of our students set individual goals in order to help
with our school wide goal. At the end of the school year, teachers give certificates to those students who
earned 100, 200, 300, 400 or more points. Eastvalley earned over 18,000 points last year, so our school-wide
goal is very doable, but we need everyone’s support.
Dedicate-A-Book Program
Congratulations to the Feilmeier Family, the Bunch Family, the Larsen Family and the Antoniades
Family for making a donation to our Dedicate-A-Book Program this year. Thank you so much for your gift
which will support the love of reading at Eastvalley!
Would you like to dedicate a book in your child’s name? With a ten dollar donation, you may have a
brand new book donated to Eastvalley Media Center in the name of anyone you wish. A bookplate noting the
donation will be placed inside the cover and the book will become a permanent part of Eastvalley’s collection.
This is a fun way to honor a relative, a teacher, student or a birthday while supporting Eastvalley’s Media Center and instilling the love of reading. Donation forms may be picked up in the Media Center.
Volunteers
Eastvalley’s Media Staff is proud to report that our students are reading at a rapid pace and checking
out books on a regular basis. We have checked out over 13,600 books this year! In order to meet the demand,
the Media Center is in constant need of volunteers. Please consider becoming a Media Mom or Dad and donate a few hours of your time a week. For more information, please see Mrs. Ritt or Mrs. Moran.

Don’t know what to get your loved one for the holidays? Want to give a
unique gift? Why not make a donation to the Foundation in your loved one’s
name! Visit our website for more information or make a donation to the Giving Tree project!
*We Want YOU to help us make Eastvalley Beautiful!!!
Your support and talents are needed to improve the school’s playground/
backyard area. Contact a Foundation member to volunteer your time, talents
and/or materials. Let’s make our children’s playground beautiful!
*Want to Help? Don’t Know How?
Donate your “My Coke Rewards” points to Eastvalley or bring in your
printer and toner cartridges and place them in the Cartridge World bins. Bins
are located in the main hallway and on the stage. All donations support the
Foundation’s fundraising efforts and projects. With your help, we CAN make
a difference!

Eastvalley's 1st Annual America Recycles Day Celebration
A small, but enthusiastic group, celebrated America Recycles Day by the Eastvalley
recycle area on Saturday, November 15. The Cub Scouts from Pack 565 helped to
unload the carloads that people brought by and also helped separate the plastic, aluminum, and paper. A rowdy group of Eastvalley girls held up the Go Green Eastvalley sign by the road in an attempt to attract more participants. The most fun was
had during the sure-to-be annual event of can stomping. Make a note to join Go
Green Eastvalley next year for America Recycles Day in November 2009!
