In 1830 and during the installation
of a coal deposit, the island of São
Vicente changed from a harsh land
to a safe haven for ships coming
from everywhere. From then to
the present day, from coal to diesel,
São Vicente and Mindelo asserted
themselves as a great cosmopolitan centre, of music festival, carnival, religious feasts and craft, where

VERKEHRSMITTEL
Buses run in the city of Mindelo and
surrounding areas for about 37$00.
In the months of July and August,
the buses go to Baía das Gatas. Public transports also run to São Pedro, but if you want to go to other
than those you may need to hire a
taxi. The taxi fares for a tour in the
city is about 120$00, 1,500$00 for
a trip to the top of Monte Verde,
1,400$00 for a round trip to Baía
das Gatas, and 2.000$00 to Calhau.
Buses and taxis are usually parked
in a square located on the West of
the Presidential Palace (Palácio Presidencial).

The island de São Vicente was discovered on January 22 of 1462,
but it was uninhabited until 1838,
when the British decided to install
a coaling-station in Mindelo to supply the ships that navigated in the
Atlantic routes. Before that time, a
last attempt for settlement in the
island occurred in 1795, with no
result. During many centuries, São
Vicente was used for cattle pasturage, namely goats and temporary
hunt-preserve.

Nevertheless, the excellent port
characteristics of the Bay of Mindelo
made the island in one of the most
important world’s trade post for the
supply of coal to the ships that crossed the Atlantic, and it soon became
the uppermost place where foreign
going ships came for coal supply.
The growing prosperity of the island
led to the attraction of successive
flux of people searching for better
living conditions. The cosmopolitan
lifestyle established in Mindelo at
that time was a decisive factor for
the establishment of the capeverdean cultural and intellectual elite in
the city.
Today São Vicente has a population
of 74,000 inhabitants approximately, and the majority lives in the city
of Mindelo, the capital of the island.
Am 22. Januar 1462 wurde die Insel entdeckt, sie blieb aber bis 1838
praktisch unbewohnt bis die Engländer sich entschieden, ein Kohlelager

Mindelo is one of the most beautiful
and picturesque cities of Cape Verde, encrusted between the ocean
and a rocky and very arid mountain.
On one of the extreme points of
the island, Monte Cara rises up. It’s
a mountain with the shape of a human face formed by erosion. Outside the bay, the islet named Ilhéu
dos Pássaros rises up from the sea.
The avenues are wide, ornamented
with palm trees, and there are squares of colonial architecture typical of
the 19th century XIX, articulating, in
a charming manner, the Portuguese
style, witnessed in the houses painted with very strong pastel colors,
with the British colonial touch, particularly found in the steep roof and in
the cambered window-glasses.

main objective is the preservation of
traditional arts which are typical of

NATIONALPARK MONTE VERDE
The soils of Monte Verde are mostly occupied with dryland farming
activities. The current floristic composition of Monte Verde and the
literature available allow for the
reconstitution of the original vegetation of the area. The species
that covered the northern slope of
Monte Verde from 400 m upwards
was Euphorbia tuckeyana.

Nightlife in Mindelo is the most
amusing of the whole country. Normally, the night starts in the Square, Praça Amílcar Cabral, and continues in the restaurants, pubs and
night clubs of the city. Life music is
played everywhere, and almost all
of the restaurants offer capeverdean
music nights. The night clubs open
around 10:30 p.m. and 11:00 p.m.,
but usually the night goers only arrive around midnight. They close

around 5:00 a.m. On the way back
home, from the night, people usually stop somewhere to eat cachupa
(corn based dish cooked with pork,
beef, and a great variety of vegetables). The entrance tickets in the
night clubs cost about 200$00 and
300$00. The cultural life in Mindelo
is also intense, with a variety of exhibitions, shows, theatre, and dance.
