E cá vamos nós navegando por este mar que nos cerca mas
também nos une.
Com alguns obstáculos inerentes à nossa atividade, certo é
que conseguimos uma vez mais enfrentar algumas intempéries, colocando-nos sempre ao serviço daqueles que nos
dão o privilégio da sua companhia.
Não podia deixar de vos dar nota do nosso novo serviço
wi-fi, agora disponível a bordo dos nossos navios “Gilberto
Mariano” e “Mestre Simão”. Desta forma, pretendemos fazer
das nossas viagens um momento confortável, de lazer ou
até de trabalho, colmatando assim uma limitação que nos
dias que correm se mostra incompatível com um serviço que
se pretende de excelência.
Com o objetivo de melhorarmos os nossos serviços, inauguramos as novas instalações na cidade da Horta, onde se
destaca uma nova loja de vendas.
Por fim, lanço-vos o desafio: Ponham-nos à prova!

unites us.
Despite some obstacles encountered on the way, related to our activity, once again, we have succeeded in
facing some bad weather, and we continue to work, to
provide a better service to those who give us the privilege of their choice.
I could not miss the opportunity to present our new Wi-Fi service, now available on board our ships “Gilberto
Mariano” and “Mestre Simão”. We want thereby make
your journey a pleasant and smooth moment, or a productive working time, if you so wish. Our new service
will fill a gap which is nowadays incompatible with an
outstanding service.
To further improve our quality, we opened new facilities in the
city of Horta, among which the new Box Office is highlighted.

Chegados à cidade da Praia da Vitória, deixamo-nos envolver pela sua extensa baía, local que, em 1829, lhe deu o nome de Vitória,
e que, hoje, é um dos seus cartões de visita.
As águas cristalinas e o seu areal convidam-no a momentos de lazer, refrescando-se do sol e contemplando as serras do Cume e
do Facho, que abraçam a cidade e a baía, levando-a docemente a envolver-se com o mar.
Pela cidade, num périplo fácil e agradável, pode visitar diversos monumentos que se destacam na história da urbe: na Casa Vitorino Nemésio, conheça a obra do escritor praiense, figura incontornável da Literatura Portuguesa do século XX; visite os Paços do
Concelho, edifício do século XVI que marca a Praça Francisco Ornelas da Câmara, coração da cidade; entre na Igreja Matriz, descobrindo os seus tesouros e a sua monumentalidade; embrenhe-se pelo comércio tradicional e pelo mercado municipal, descobrindo
sabores, cheiros e a mestria dos artesãos locais; deixe-se levar pela marginal da cidade, sobranceira à baía, inspirando a maresia
num puro momento de descanso; visite o Paul da Praia da Vitória, exemplo perfeito da conjugação da natureza com o edificado
urbano; ou suba aos miradouros das serras do Facho ou do Cume, contemplando, no primeiro, a planície que se estende da baía
às Lajes, e, no segundo, a manta de retalhos que caracteriza a paisagem da Terceira.
Immediately after our arrival in Praia da Vitória, you’ll be enchanted by the large bay to which, in 1829, was added the name
of Victory: nowadays it is one of the city’s most visited sites.
Clear waters and sand are a refreshing invitation to stay and to contemplate Cume and Facho mountain ranges surrounding
the city and the bay, or to enjoy all the beauty of the sea.
Making your way around the city on foot, it will be easy and pleasant to visit several monuments that stand out for their
significance. In the Vitorino Nemésio House, you will learn more about the work of this famous writer, prominent figure in
20th-century Portuguese literature. In the heart of the city, don’t miss a visit to the Town Hall (Paços do Concelho), a 16th-century building that characterize the square (Praça Francisco Ornelas da Câmara). Visit the main Church (Igreja Matriz),
and discover its treasures and its monumentality. Let yourself be seduced by traditional retailing, where you will admire the
works from local artists and artisans, and by the municipal market with its flavors and smells. Walk along the waterfront
boulevard, overlooking the bay, and enjoy a relaxing time breathing the intense smell of the sea. Visiting the Paul da Praia da
Vitória, you will discover a perfect example of how well nature and built patrimony can interact. From the viewpoints of Facho
or Cume mountain ranges, you will see the plain between the bay and Lajes, and a landscape comparable to a ‘patchwork
quilt’, so typical of Terceira island.

In Quatro Ribeiras, visit the oldest church in the municipality. In Biscoitos, discover the vineyard landscape and taste the
Verdelho wine, born from the warmth of small enclosures built with the traditional black basaltic stone. In Agualva, you

Discover the walking trails of Rocha do Chambre, Bays of Agualva and Rrelheiras de São Brás.

A ilha Terceira e o arquipélago dos Açores dispõem na Praia da Vitória de uma infraestrutura portuária que
é um caso singular no âmbito da dialética entre as gentes destas ilhas e o vasto oceano que as circunda.
Na realidade, o Porto da Praia da Vitória não foi idealizado e materializado como prolongamento natural
de uma povoação local - cidade, vila ou freguesia, como a generalidade das situações por essa Região
fora -, mas foi antes resultado de um pensamento e de uma visão de futuro, não só para a ilha onde, em
particular, se situa, como para todo o espaço geográfico açoriano, de uma forma alargada.
As notícias que são contemporâneas da sua construção falavam de um “empreendimento destinado
a produzir efeitos de grande relevância na vida económica da Região Autónoma dos Açores”, tendo a
infraestrutura obedecido, na sua génese, a “requisitos básicos ordenados à implantação de uma área
industrial e comercial”.
Juntava-se, evidentemente, à criação deste porto oceânico o reconhecimento da posição geoestratégica das ilhas
açorianas e a ideia de integração dos Açores em espaços económicos amplos, de dimensão nacional e internacional.

Todas estas considerações fazem perspetivar que o desígnio do Porto da
Praia da Vitória, para além das suas variadas funcionalidades locais e regionais, mais rotineiras - de abastecimento da ilha Terceira de mercadorias diversificadas, de escoamento dos produtos produzidos internamente,
de embarque, desembarque e trânsito de passageiros, de apoio seguro
às pescas, de base de uma importante frota da cabotagem insular e da
sua zona de reparação naval, entre outras dimensões -, possa ter um forte
impulso nos próximos anos, quando se começar a generalizar a utilização do
gás natural como combustível de eleição no transporte marítimo e quando, aí,
se afirmar absolutamente necessário dispor de um terminal de abastecimento
daquele tipo de hidrocarboneto a meio do Atlântico Norte.
O novo desafio, à escala internacional, está em marcha e o Porto da
Praia da Vitória irá apresentar-se na linha da frente deste inovador paradigma que começa a desenhar-se no universo do tráfego oceânico por
via marítima entre, sobretudo e no que a nós nos diz respeito, os continentes europeu e americano.
With all these considerations in mind, it seems appropriate to foresee that the Port of
Praia da Vitória, in addition to carrying out its routine tasks - the supply of goods to
the Island of Terceira, the distribution of its products, the embarkation, disembarkation
and transit of passengers, the logistical support to fisheries and to the coastwise fleet
of the Island, with ship repair yards, among other facilities - will grow significantly over
the next few years, when the use of natural gas as a primary fuel will become a general
usage in oceanic shipping, than making this kind of fuelling facilities absolutely necessary in the middle of the North Atlantic.
This is the challenge we face now, at an international scale. The Port of Praia da Vitória
lead from the front the innovative paradigm which is already appearing over the horizon,
into the oceanic shipping universe and, being crucial for us, between the American and
European continents.

FESTAS DA PRAIA 2016, FROM JULY 29 TO AUGUST 7
As Festas da Praia 2016 decorrem de 29 de julho a 07 de agosto, na cidade da
Praia da Vitória, tendo, este ano, como tema central A Magia do Circo.
As festas assentam em quatro vetores: animação de rua (com vários cortejos,
desfiles, espetáculos, animação infantil e música); Blue Music Resort (palco central do cartaz musical das Festas da Praia e cenário do maior festival de música
de dança do Arquipélago); Feira de Gastronomia do Atlântico (com restaurantes
de várias zonas turísticas do País e da Região); e tauromaquia (tourada de
praça e touradas à corda).
No programa festivo de rua destaca-se o Cortejo de Abertura, no dia 30; o
Desfile de Marchas, a 05; o Cortejo Etnográfico, a 06; e o Desfile Infantil, a 07.

The event ‘Festas da Praia 2016’ takes place from July 29 to August 7 in the
city of Praia da Vitória. This year, the Magic of Circus was the theme chosen.
These festivals present four main activities: street entertainment (with
several parades, shows, children entertainment and music); Blue Music Resort (main stage of the line-up of Festas da Praia - the largest
Azorean dance-music festival); Atlantic Food Fair (restaurants from
several Portuguese and Azorean touristic regions); and bullfighting
(Portuguese-style bullfights and bullfights by rope).
Highlights: Opening Parade, on July 30; Folk Dance Parade, on Aug.
5; Ethnographic Parade, on Aug. 6; and Children Parade, on Aug. 7.

musical do Blue Music Resort 2016. As noites musicais complementam-se com os Dj’s Riot e Macow&Gonga (29),
Mastiksoul e Gaspar (30), Drumma Scratch e F3lix (31), Eddie Ferrer e Jesus (01), Danny Avila e Rodrigo d’Ó (02), Rod
Ávila e Pedro F (03), Vinai e John C (04), Kevu e Master Vibes (05) e André Henriques e Matti (06). De 27 de junho a 23
de julho, a pulseira semanal terá um custo de 35 euros. A partir de 25 de julho, as pulseiras passam a ser vendidas
no secretariado das Festas, na Praça Francisco Ornelas da Câmara, custando 40 euros. As pulseiras diárias têm
um custo de 15 euros, excetuando na noite do concerto da banda Extreme, cuja pulseira custará 20 euros. Estão
disponíveis também os pacotes “pulseira+viagem Atlânticoline” por 50 euros; “pulseira+viagem Atlânticoline+zona
de campismo” por 55 euros; e “pulseira+zona de campismo” por 40 euros.
Tourada de Praça
Os cavaleiros António Telles, Ana Batista e João Pamplona vão abrilhantar a Corrida de Toiros das Festas da
Praia 2016, que decorre no dia 01 de agosto, às 18h30, na Praça de Toiros da lha Terceira. As pegas deste
ano estão a cargo dos Grupos de Forcados Amadores do Ramo Grande e Amadores de Lisboa. Em praça,
estarão presentes dois toiros de três ganadarias distintas, nomeadamente a Casa Agrícola José
Albino Fernandes, o Ezequiel Rodrigues e João Gaspar.
O programa da Feira de Gastronomia do Atlântico será apresentado brevemente.

Cavaleiros António Telles, Ana Batista and João Pamplona (2 horsemen and 1 horsewoman)
will further enhance the ‘Corrida de Toiros das Festas da Praia 2016’, which will take place on
August 1, at 6:30 p.m. h30, in the Praça de Toiros of Terceira Island. This year, two groups Forcados Amadores do Ramo Grande and Amadores de Lisboa - will perform the catches
(pegas). Three bulls, from three different bull breeders (Casa Agrícola José Albino Fernandes, Ezequiel Rodrigues and João Gaspar) will enter in the arena.

A Biblioteca Municipal Silvestre Ribeiro (BMSR) está localizada na cidade da Praia da Vitória,
na ilha Terceira, umas das nove ilhas que integram o arquipélago dos Açores. O seu edifício,
que remonta ao século XVIII, foi outrora a casa das tias do célebre escritor praiense Vitorino
Nemésio, pai da “açorianidade”.
A origem do seu nome deve-se ao fundador desta instituição, José Silvestre Ribeiro (político,
historiador e governador civil português), que desempenhou um importante papel no apoio
às vítimas e na reconstrução do concelho da Praia da Vitória aquando da Segunda Caída
da Praia (intensa crise sísmica), que ocorreu a 15 de junho de 1841. Esta ilustre figura da
toponímica da Praia da Vitória ofereceu ainda à cidade, em 1891, a sua estante privada
com 1181 obras.
Entre 1966 e 2002, a BMSR integrou a Biblioteca Fixa 123 da Fundação Calouste
Gulbenkian, com serviço de Itinerância a partir de 1963, incutindo hábitos de leitura
na população das onze freguesias do Concelho.
Silvestre Ribeiro Municipal Library (BMSR) is located in the city of Praia da Vitória, on
the island of Terceira, one of the nine islands of the Azores. The building, going back to
18th century, was once a house belonged to the aunts of the famous writer Vitorino
Nemésio, born in Praia da Vitória and considered the “father of Azoreanity”.
Its name was chosen o homage the founder of this institution, José Silvestre Ribeiro
(a Portuguese politician, historian and prefect), who has played an important role in
supporting the victims and in rebuilding the municipality of Praia da Vitória, when
a severe seismic crisis, on June 15, 1841, destroyed the city. This event is remembered as ‘the Second Fall of Praia”. This distinguished personality also offered to
the city of Praia da Vitória, in 1891, his private library (1191 books).
Between 1966 and 2002, has been integrated into BMSR the Fixed Library no.
123 of the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation (its bookmobile, started in 1963, promoted reading habits among the inhabitants of the municipality, subdivided
into 11 civil parishes).
Esta biblioteca possui um vasto e diversificado espólio, constituído por cerca de 35 mil
obras de várias áreas, que abrangem pessoas de diferentes faixas etárias.
Além das tarefas diárias, como catalogação, indexação, cotação e arrumação, os
colaboradores desta instituição promovem a leitura junto dos utilizadores deste
espaço, através da concretização de iniciativas que fomentem o gosto pelos livros,
das quais se destacam a “Hora do Conto”; “Dar uma Nova Casa ao Livro (troca
de livros); Ler e Reler (empréstimo de manuais escolares); “Uma Mão Cheia de
Livros; “Praia da Vitória - Cidade dos Livros”; e “Escola Virtual”.
A BMSR tem uma parceria com o Centro Local de Aprendizagem da Universidade Aberta e participa ativamente em eventos culturais, como o “Outono Vivo”
e o “Conto Contigo na Praia”, desenvolvendo ainda diversos projetos de índole
educacional, ambiental e cultural junto das escolas do Concelho.

In addition to their daily tasks (cataloguing, indexation, inventory and organization), the staff of the library promotes reading habits among the public, through
initiatives as “Storytelling time”; “Give this Book a New Home” (Books exchange); “Reading and Rereading (lending of textbooks); “A handful of Books; “Praia
da Vitória - City of Books”; and “Virtual School”.
BMSR also has forged partnerships with the Local Learning Center of Universidade Aberta, and actively takes part in cultural events such as “Living Autumn”
and “I count on you - Storytelling in Praia”; it develops several educational,
environmental and cultural projects for schools of the Municipality.

O Governo dos Açores, através da Secretaria Regional da Agricultura e Ambiente, disponibiliza uma nova aplicação para telefones móveis dos Parques Naturais dos Açores.
Esta iniciativa, da Direção Regional do Ambiente, promove a exploração dos
Parques Naturais dos Açores, disponibilizando informação variada sobre o
Parque Natural de cada uma das ilhas do arquipélago, permitindo que o visitante pesquise todas as valências que cada um tem para oferecer.
Nesse sentido, faculta informações sobre biodiversidade, vulcanologia e geologia, prémios e classificações, designadamente distinções ao nível de património
mundial, reservas da biosfera ou sítios Ramsar, assim como sobre áreas protegidas, trilhos pedestres e centros ambientais.
Esta plataforma conta ainda com um guia de campo, informações sobre os Parceiros dos Parques e que são empresas de animação turística ou outras, contatos e
ligações úteis, além de sugestões de itinerários de visita em cada uma das nove ilhas.
The Government of the Azores, through the Regional Secretariat for Agriculture and
the Environment, offers a new Azores Natural Parks mobile application.
This initiative of the Regional Directorate for the Environment, promotes exploration
of the Azorean Natural Parks, providing a variety of useful information on the Natural
Park of each of the nine islands. With it, the visitor can learn more about all the natural
treasures they offer.
The app provides information about biodiversity, volcanic and geological heritage, awards
and ratings, namely classification as World heritage, biosphere reserves or Ramsar sites,
as well as about protected areas, hiking trails and environmental centers.
This platform also offers a field guide, information on Park’s Partners, as tourist entertainment companies or others, useful contacts and links, in addition to suggested itineraries to
visit all the nine islands.

Nove ilhas, nove parques
O arquipélago dos Açores constitui o extremo mais ocidental da Europa, sensivelmente
a um terço do caminho entre a costa ocidental do continente europeu (1 600km) e
a costa oriental da América do Norte (3 900km). Composto por nove ilhas, divididas
em três grupos distintos: o grupo oriental (São Miguel e Santa Maria), o grupo central
(Terceira, Graciosa, São Jorge, Pico e Faial) e o grupo ocidental (Flores e Corvo). Com
fisiografia e dimensões diferentes, totalizam uma área de aproximadamente 2 333km2 e
uma extensão de cerca de 600km.
Os Açores são a parte emersa de uma elevação com raiz submarina, formada pela acumulação de depósitos vulcânicos assentes sobre o fundo oceânico. A sua origem morfológica, localização remota, relativa juventude e a forte influência da corrente do Golfo,
lhe conferem uma grande variedade de geopaisagens, derivadas dos diferentes tipos de
vulcanismo e da posterior dinâmica de diversos agentes modeladores. Assim sendo, foram
identificados no arquipélago, 121 geossítios que integram o Geoparque Açores.
Geocaching
Os Parques Naturais dos Açores também estabeleceram uma parceria com o GeoPT - Portugal Geocaching and Adventure Portal, associando-se à rede de travelbugs por geocaching,
atividade de lazer e desporto na natureza que pode ser desfrutada em todo o arquipélago e
se articula com a utilização sustentável das áreas protegidas, assegurando que os praticantes
cumpram adequadamente a legislação e os códigos de conduta nessas áreas.
Foram lançados nove “Travel Bugs”, um por cada ilha, com o propósito de “viajarem” com informação sobre os respetivos Parques Naturais no seu interior.
Foram lançados ainda outros dois que dão a conhecer a Rede de Centros Ambientais dos
Açores e os nove Parques Naturais de Ilha, o primeiro destinado a viajar pelo arquipélago e
o segundo por todo o mundo.

This app helps us locate each point of interest inside the Natural Park, through Google Maps,
GPS system or the simple description “How to get there”.
All parks maps are available offline, with no need to have an internet connection to consult them.
The app is free and available, in Portuguese and English, to iOS and Android mobile devices. It
can be downloaded from Play Store (for Android system) and from App Store (for iOS system).

Geocaching
The Azores Natural Parks have established a partnership with GeoPT - Portugal and Geocaching Adventure,
and have joined a network of travel bugs by geocaching, a nature activity that combines leisure and sport.
This activity is available all over the archipelago, in coordination with the sustainable use of protected areas in
order to ensure that participants comply with the legislation and the codes of conduct in these areas.
Nine “Travel Bugs” were launched, one for each island, to “travel” with information about its parks inside them.
Two other Travel bugs were launched, to make known the Network of Environmental Centers of the
Azores and the nine Natural Parks: the first one is aimed at travelling within the Archipelago, the
other can travel all over the world.

The Archipelago of the Azores is the westernmost point of Europe, at 1/3 of the distance between the West Coast of the European Continent, (1 600 km) and the East coast of North America
(3 900km). I tis composed of nine islands divided into three groups: he Eastern group including
Santa Maria and São Miguel, the Central group including Terceira, Graciosa, São Jorge, Pico and
Faial and the Western group including Flores and Corvo. The nine island, each of them have its own
distinct characteristics, occupy a total area of 2,333 km2, and they extend for more than 600 km.
The Archipelago of the Azores is the emerging part of a submarine mountain chain, formed by the
accumulation of volcanic deposits lying on the Ocean bottom. Their morphological origin and their
remote locations, as well as their recent formation and the strong influence of the Gulf Stream,
determine aa wide variety of geolandscapes, derived from the types of eruption, its dynamics and
the subsequent actions of weathering. 121 geosites were identified as parts of the Azores Geopark.

A vegetação natural dos Açores contém uma das últimas e mais velhas florestas
virgens da Europa: a floresta húmida laurifólia, ou como é vulgarmente conhecida,
laurissilva. A geodiversidade e a biodiversidade estão estreitamente ligadas às distintas condições ecológicas desta zona.
É igualmente assinalável a riqueza faunística dos Açores. Num total de 2 298 espécies e subespécies, 266 são exclusivas destas ilhas. Das 70 espécies de vertebrados
terrestres, 38 são aves nidificantes, das quais podemos destacar o pombo-torcaz-dos-Açores (Columba palumbus azorica) e o milhafre (Buteo buteo rothschildi), visto
como um símbolo do arquipélago. Os mamíferos apresentam uma baixa diversidade
de espécies, contudo, importa salientar a única endémica: o morcego-dos-Açores
(Nyctalus azoreum).
Para preservar tão precioso mundo natural, foram criados os Parques Naturais dos
Açores e para promover a sua divulgação, a Rede de Centros Ambientais, orientadas
para a conservação da diversidade e para a utilização sustentável dos recursos naturais, de forma a potenciar o turismo e o bem-estar das populações.

Among the natural vegetation, the Azores islands present one of the last European
old primary forests: a subtropical laurel forest, generally known as laurissilva. Geodiversity and biodiversity are closely linked to various ecological conditions.
The wealth of their fauna is also of great significance. Among 2 298 species or subspecies living in the Archipelago, 266 are endemic. 70 terrestrial vertebrate species
exist here, being 38 breeding birth, as the Azores wood pigeon (Columba palumbus
azorica) and the common buzzard (Buteo buteo rothschildi), which is one of the symbols of the Archipelago. On the contrary, mammals present a less diversity, being the
bat of the Azores (Nyctalus azoreum) the only endemic terrestrial mammal.
To preserve this rich natural heritage, the Azores Natural Parks were created. To promote and disseminate them, a Network of Environmental Centers was implemented,
in order to protect our biodiversity and to promote a the sustainable use of natural

Pelo facto de vivermos em ilhas, torna-se imprescindível que a
população se consciencialize para o problema da produção de resíduos, dando-lhes um encaminhamento adequado e garantindo
assim a sustentabilidade ambiental do planeta.
Numa sociedade em constante desenvolvimento, onde a produção de resíduos tem vindo a aumentar significativamente, deverá
ser preocupação de todos nós, contribuir com simples gestos e
atitudes no dia-a-dia, adotando medidas para a prevenção/redução de resíduos que é o comportamento do topo da hierarquia
de gestão de resíduos.
Uma outra opção a repensar, poderá passar pela reutilização de
resíduos, como por exemplo, dando-lhes uma nova utilidade e
apenas em último caso, procurar dar a melhor solução possível aos resíduos produzidos nas habitações, depositando-os nos
ecopontos corretos, por forma a permitir a sua reciclagem.
The fact that we live on islands becomes indispensable that the population raise awareness of the issue to the waste production by giving
them an adequate destination and thereafter ensuring the environmental sustainability of the planet.
Atualmente, uma das principais preocupações da
sociedade, passa por preservar o meio que nos
rodeia. Desta forma, é urgente a adoção de boas
práticas e políticas de forma a irem contra as tendências relacionadas com a elevada produção de
resíduos, o consumo exagerado e a inadequada
gestão dos recursos naturais.
Nowadays one of the main concerns of the society is to preserve the environment that surrounds us. Therefore it´s urgent the adoption
of good habits and politics to avoid tendencies
related with the elevated production of waste,
the exaggerated consume and the inadequate management of natural waste.
In a society that is constantly in development, where the waste production has been increasing significantly, it should be a preoccupation of all of us, to contribute with simple gestures and attitudes on
our everyday living, adopting habits for the prevention/reduction of
waste which is on top of the residues management hierarchy.
Another option is to reuse the waste, for example, by giving them
other utility and only in last case trying to give the residues produced
in our houses the best solution possible, by depositing them in the
recycling bins so that they can be recycled.

Numa perspetiva de futuro e de sustentabilidade torna-se essencial uma gestão que fomente, simultaneamente, o desenvolvimento económico das regiões e do país, a proteção do ambiente, a coesão social e
a melhoria da qualidade de vida da população.
A chegada do verão acarreta inevitavelmente uma maior produção de resíduos quer nas praias e piscinas
quer nos festivais de verão. É por isso indispensável privilegiar o uso de materiais reutilizáveis, recicláveis
ou biodegradáveis e consequentemente minimizar a sua produção. Nas praias e piscinas uma das inúmeras
soluções passa pela utilização de cinzeiros portáteis reduzindo deste modo as beatas espalhadas pelo chão, já
nos festivais o uso de copos ou canecas reutilizáveis é uma forma de evitar o desperdício de copos de plástico.
A participação e envolvência de toda a comunidade é fundamental para a redução dos resíduos e consequentemente o sucesso da reciclagem na ilha de Santa Maria.
In a future perspective and sustainability it becomes crucial a management that promotes, simultaneous, the economic development of the regions and the country, environmental protection, social cohesion and the improvement
in quality of life.
The arrival of summer leads inevitably to a major production of waste at pools, beaches or festivals, and so it´s
essential to give preference to the use of reusable, recycle or biodegradable materials and that way reduce their
production. At pools and beaches one of the numerous solutions is to use portable ashtrays reducing the number of
ashes left on the floor or sand. In the festivals one of the solutions would be to use reusable cups or mugs and this way
reduce the waste of plastic cups.
The participation of the community is fundamental for the reduction of waste and consequently the success of the recycling on Santa Maria island.

Fort of Santa Cruz (Faial). Because the events associated with this fort, from Cumberland’s invasion in the 16th century to “General Armstrong’s” episode in the 19th century,
deserve that you look for someone who can tell them to you.
Boqueirão Factory (Flores). Ah! The many Azorean whaling adventures in the deep
ocean that often happened as the day was dawning.
Windmills (Corvo). On islands where the wind is a constant element, these are true monuments to the technology, the territory, the climate and the age-old know-how that
were brought from Europe to these remote outposts of the deep Atlantic.

Luís Godinho nasceu em Angra do Heroísmo, em 1983. Em 2009
concluiu a licenciatura em Engenharia e Gestão do Ambiente
na Universidade dos Açores. Atualmente trabalha na Secretaria
Regional da Agricultura e Ambiente e como fotógrafo Freelancer.
O seu trabalho fotográfico é reconhecido internacionalmente pelos
editores dos principais sites de fotos como a National Geographic,
500px, 1x, Leica Fotografie International, entre outros.
Foi várias vezes marca de excelência em concursos de
fotografia Leica. Foi vencedor de um concurso nacional chamado
“Paisagens de Portugal”. Tem várias fotos publicadas na
imprensa nacional e publicações internacionais, como a revista
“O Mundo da Fotografia digital”, “Visão”, “Vander Love Magazine”,
entre outras.
Já tem um livro editado e está a acabar o segundo.
Luís Godinho was born in Angra do Heroísmo, in 1983. In 2009

Regional Secretariat for Agriculture.

THE QUEEN’S TARTLETS
Estes bolos foram confecionados na Ilha Terceira aquando da visita régia de D. Carlos e D.
Amélia em julho de 1901.
Apesar da vocação marítima de 5 séculos de conquistas e descobertas, nunca um rei de Portugal se tinha deslocado em visita oficial a qualquer território português do mundo.
Nas casas abastadas de Angra abundavam as especiarias, que na época da rota das Índias nos habituamos a consumir, assim como o mel de cana vindo do Brasil. Havia uma classe privilegiada, habituada à
boa mesa, que guardava nos escaninhos da memória os aromas e os paladares, deixados de geração em
geração. Conservavam como inalienável tesouro os receituários manuscritos pelos antepassados.
These tartlets were first made on the island of Terceira during the royal visit of King Carlos I and
Queen Amélia in July 1901.
Despite the maritime tradition stemming from five centuries of conquests and discoveries, a king of
Portugal had never traveled on an official visit to any Portuguese territory in the world.
Spices abounded in the wealthy households of Angra, as people had grown accustomed to consume
them since the time of the Route to the Indies. Sugar cane syrup from Brazil was also a common sight,
as there was a privileged class that was acquainted with good food and remembered the aromas and
flavors passed down from one generation to the next. They also preserved as an invaluable treasure the
handwritten recipes of their ancestors.

São um ex-líbris da doçaria Terceirense.
Têm registo de marca nacional 333012 do INPI, são certificados como produto artesanal dos Açores e exibem o Selo “Açores - Certificado pela Natureza”.

So with locally available ingredients, spices and sugar cane syrup, feminine, wise
and affectionate hands concocted tartlets with a honeyed texture and a simple
appearance yet with an exquisite flavor that delighted the Queen, so much so that
from then on they would be named after her - BOLOS D. AMÉLIA [Queen Amélie’s
Tartlets]. They have become an iconic element of the confectionery of the island
of Terceira.
They carry the National Trademark Registration No. 333012 from the INPI [patent
office] and are certified as an Azorean homemade product, featuring the seal “Azores
- Certificated by Nature.”

QUAD BIKE RESCUE
A beleza das ilhas dos Açores tem potenciado
o crescimento dos passeios na natureza. Os
espaços naturais são bastante convidativos e têm
grande potencial para a atividade turística. Mas
a dificuldade de alguns destes passeios ou um
turista mais incauto, resulta ocasionalmente
em situações de auxílio e assistência, com
necessidade de prestação efetiva de socorro.
A maioria destes espaços não permite a
circulação de veículos de socorro.
The beauty of the Azores Islands has led
to the growth of nature walks. Natural
spaces are very welcoming and have
great potential for tourism. However, the
difficulty of some of these trails and some
unwary tourists occasionally result in
situations that require the provision of
aid, assistance and actual rescue.
Traditional emergency vehicles cannot
access most of these spaces.

Contudo, a ocorrência de situações de
emergência em zonas de difícil acesso resulta
na mobilização de um elevado número de
operacionais, exigindo mais tempo e esforço. O
aumento das intervenções nestas áreas originou
a criação do projeto “Moto 4 de Salvamento”,
apoiado na necessidade operacional de diminuir
os tempos de resposta sem sacrificar a qualidade
do socorro prestado.
A primeira unidade operacional deste projeto foi
colocada no Corpo de Bombeiros da Calheta, na
Ilha de São Jorge, um Concelho com inúmeras fajãs
apelativas ao turismo de natureza. Este meio de
socorro é constituído por três bombeiros certificados
para a sua operação, com formação em emergência
pré-hospitalar, apoiados pelo equipamento de tração
e equipamento de estabilização e transporte.
É utilizada uma moto-quatro adequada aos locais de
operação, complementada por um guincho elétrico
frontal e com capacidade de transporte para malas
com equipamento de emergência pré-hospitalar e
dois operacionais.
However, when emergency situations occur in hard-to-reach
areas, they result in the mobilization of a large number of rescue
workers requiring additional time and effort. The increase in the
number of operations in these areas has led to the creation of the
“Quad Bike Rescue” project based on the operational need to reduce
the response time without sacrificing the quality of assistance.
The first unit of this project was stationed at the Calheta Fire
Department on the island of São Jorge, a municipality with countless
fajãs [flat strips of land by the sea] that invite tourists to engage in
outdoor activities. This means of assistance includes three firefighters
who have been certificated for this operation with pre-hospital
emergency training and who benefit from the support of traction
equipment and stabilization and transport equipment.
They use a quad bike that is suited to different rescue sites, features a
front electric winch and can carry cases with pre-hospital emergency
equipment and two rescue workers.
Para a estabilização e transporte, a unidade operacional
dispõe de um atrelado com suspensão e dimensão
adequadas, capaz de anular a maioria das oscilações que
possam agravar o estado clínico da vítima. É dotado de
um eixo com rodas de dimensão generosa, que permite
ultrapassar obstáculos de forma segura, e um banco para
o terceiro elemento da guarnição acompanhar de forma
constante a vítima durante o transporte.
Apesar de recente, é um trabalho viável pelos resultados positivos
apresentados em operações reais de salvamento, ultrapassando de
forma muito satisfatória as expetativas depositadas no projeto. É um
serviço inteiramente desenvolvido a nível nacional, complementado
com a exigência do SRPCBA, que se preocupa em desenvolver e
otimizar a prestação de socorro aos açorianos e a quem nos visita.
Este meio de elevada mobilidade em operações de socorro em
locais de acesso limitado, é seguramente uma aposta do SRPCBA,
que pretende num futuro próximo abranger outros Corpos de
Bombeiros da Região Autónoma dos Açores. Será uma mais-valia
ao apoio tático no salvamento e adequação técnica em diversas
operações de proteção civil e socorro.
For the stabilization and transport, the unit includes a trailer with an
appropriate size and suspension that is able to cope with most of the
impacts that can worsen the clinical condition of a victim. Its axle is
equipped with large wheels, which allow it to overcome obstacles safely,
and a seat from where the third member of the team can constantly
monitor the victim during the transport.
Although this is a recent project, it is clearly viable given the positive
results of actual rescue operations that noticeably exceeded the
expectations placed on the project. It is a service fully developed at
the national level, complemented by the requirements of the SRPCBA
[Regional Civil Protection and Fire Fighting Service], which aims to
develop and optimize the provision of aid both to Azoreans and to visitors.
Providing high mobility in rescue operations in hard-to-reach areas,
this means of assistance is a priority for the SRPCBA, which intends to
implement similar units at other Fire Departments of the Autonomous
Region of the Azores in the near future. They will be an asset providing
tactical support and being technically suitable to various civil protection
and rescue operations.

Nascido em Lisboa em 1951, entrou para a Marinha de Guerra em fevereiro de 74,
comandou várias unidades de Fuzileiros, foi agraciado com diversos louvores e possui três condecorações militares. Em 1990, já como oficial superior é colocado nos
Açores no Comando Chefe das Forças Armadas e em 1995 passou à reserva tendo
ingressado nos quadros da Administração Pública Regional.
Desde essa data passou sucessivamente pelo Centro das Capelas, e pelos cargos
de Chefe de Gabinete do Secretario da Agricultura e Pescas, Inspetor Regional
das Pescas, Presidente da Lotaçor e Presidente da Atlânticoline. Foi Vice-presidente da Associação Europeia de Lotas, representou a Região na Comissão Nacional de Planeamento de Emergência e foi também Presidente da Associação
de Atletismo de S. Miguel.
Captain António Raposo was born in Lisbon in 1951, joined the Navy in February
1974, captained various Marine units and was awarded many accolades and
three military decorations. In 1990, when he was already a senior officer, he
was placed in the Azores in the High Command of the Armed Forces, becoming
a reserve officer and joining the Regional Public Administration in 1995.
Since then, he has successively held positions at the Capelas Center, as the
Chief of Staff of the Regional Secretary of Agriculture and Fisheries, as the
Regional Inspector of Fisheries, as the Chairman of the Board at Lotaçor and
as the Chairman of the Board at Atlânticoline. He was the Vice-president
of the European Association of Fish Markets, represented the Autonomous
Region of the Azores in the National Commission on Emergency Planning
and was also the President of the São Miguel Athletics Association.

Na reforma desde janeiro de 2011, tem vindo a dedicar-se a projetos de voluntariado, nomeadamente na Fundação Liga e na Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian,
tendo inclusive efetuado uma missão em Angola em 2013, atualmente integra
também a direção da Associação dos Antigos Alunos do Colégio Valsassina.
Quando em novembro de 2007, recebeu o convite para presidir à Atlânticoline
e sabendo que era uma empresa ligada ao Mar, não hesitou na resposta, “se
é aí que a Região precisa de mim, é para aí que vou”. Na altura a empresa
com pouco mais de um ano e meio de existência e três funcionários fixos,
dava os seus primeiros passos e como tal o desafio era gigantesco mas
muito gratificante. Com o final do mandato em novembro de 2010, e após
mais de 36 anos de serviço público, solicitou a sua passagem à reforma.
Na sua opinião, a Atlânticoline é sem sombra de dúvida uma empresa imprescindível numa região arquipelágica como os Açores, de importância
vital para a dinamização e desenvolvimento económico, para o turismo
e mesmo para o combate à desertificação, aproximando as ilhas e as
suas dinâmicas.
Retired since January 2011, he has been involved in volunteer activities,
particularly in the Liga and Calouste Gulbenkian Foundations, and even
carried out a mission in Angola in 2013. Today he is also a member of
the board at the Association of Alumni of Valsassina College.
Knowing that Atlânticoline was a company linked to the sea, he did
not hesitate when he was invited to chair the board in November
2007, “if that’s where the region needs me, then there’s where I
will go.” At the time, the company had been operating for a little
over a year and a half, had three permanent employees, was
taking its first steps and therefore represented a huge but very
rewarding challenge. When his term ended in November 2010, he
applied for retirement after more than 36 years of public service.
In his view, Atlânticoline is undoubtedly an indispensable company for an archipelagic region such as the Azores, playing a
vitally important role in economic promotion and development,
in tourism and even in combating desertification, approaching
the islands and their dynamics.

Para a Atlânticoline a segurança é um desígnio orientador da nossa atividade.
A atividade de transportar pessoas exige que um conjunto de normas seja
cumprido, garantindo que tudo está conforme o previsto.
Com estas páginas, pretendemos que o passageiro fique a conhecer alguns dos
mecanismos obrigatórios a que navios e tripulações estão sujeitos.
Qualquer navio operado por nós é sujeito a fiscalizações e inspeções obrigatórias,
nomeadamente:
1.Inspeções e certificados no porto de origem.
2.Certificação de toda a tripulação.
3.Lisboa - inspeção DGRM.
Durante as viagens, os navios têm internamente mecanismos de gestão de segurança
obrigatórios, que conduzem a revisões periódicas de todos os pontos mais sensíveis.
Felizmente as emergências são a exceção e não a regra, contudo tudo fazemos para
que a sua segurança esteja acima de todo o tipo de interesses.
Safety and security of Atlânticoline crew and passenger has always been and remains our greatest
priority. Passenger transport requires compliance with strict rules, to ensure that everything is
operating as it should.
The aim of these pages is to explain how some mandatory mechanism have been envisaged and are
applied to ships and crew.
Any vessel operated by us is subjected to mandatory checks and inspections, namely:
1. Inspection and certification in the home port.
2. Certification of the whole crew.
3. Lisbon - DGRM inspection.
During the trips, internal safety management systems are necessarily working. They ensure
periodical checks regarding all relevant points.
Luckily, emergencies are the exception rather than the rule, but even so we do everything
possible, and your safety takes precedence over any other interest.

Em viagem, é muito importante estar atento a todas as indicações
transmitidas pela tripulação, assim como observar com atenção o
vídeo de segurança projetado.
Todos os navios da Atlânticoline são espaços verdes, ou seja livres
de fumo, pelo que não é permitido fumar no seu interior.
Não é também permitido o uso de garrafas ou copos de vidro. Nos
nossos bares, ser-lhe-á sempre entregue material de plástico.
É ainda proibido permanecer de tronco nu, colocar os pés em cima das
cadeiras e sofás.
Sempre que ache necessário, chame a tripulação, eles estão treinados
para o ajudar, conhecem muito bem o navio. Se perceber que algo está
errado no navio ou com um passageiro não hesite em pedir ajuda, pode
ser fundamental para manter a normalidade e segurança a bordo.
A Segurança para a Atlânticoline não é um conceito abstrato e teórico, tem
sido alvo de forte investimento cujo retorno tem sido o esperado. Com Recursos Humanos cada vez mais experientes, qualificados e devidamente formados, estamos cientes que esta operação vai decorrer com tranquilidade
para todos.
A segurança deste navio começa em si, respeite todas as indicações transmitidas pela tripulação, eles estão devidamente treinados para o ajudar.

Atlânticoline vessels are green spaces, smoke-free, so smoking is banned in all indoor areas.
It is not allowed to use glass bottles or cups; in our bars, only plastic material is used.
Passengers cannot be bare-chested or put their feet on the chairs or sofas.
Whenever necessary or convenient, call a crew member. The crew has been trained to
help you, and our staff knows very well the ship.
If you need any help, or you think something is wrong in the ship or with a passenger,
please do not hesitate to ask the crew. His/her intervention may be crucial to ensure
normality and safety on board.
For Atlânticoline, safety is not an abstract or theoretical concept. We have made a
significant investment in this aspect, and its return was the expected one. Our Human
Resources are increasingly experienced, qualified and well-trained, so we are sure that
this operation will run smoothly.
Safety on board starts with you. Please follow the instructions given by the crew: they know
what they must do to help you.

da Atlânticoline - “Ler no Atlântico”
Muito em breve, em qualquer embarcação ao serviço da
Atlânticoline, tanto na operação sazonal, como na operação
regular, poderá desfrutar do prazer da leitura enquanto navega pelo nosso oceano. Foi para isso que implementamos o
projeto ‘Ler no Atlântico’, o qual pretende ser uma biblioteca
de bordo autónoma. Para isso foi oportunamente criado,
nas nossas embarcações, um espaço próprio onde serão
disponibilizados gratuitamente diversos livros, os quais
podem ser levados pelos nossos passageiros desde que
em troca seja entregue outro.

O sucesso deste novo projeto dependerá unicamente da conduta dos nossos passageiros, uma vez que a eles caberá fazer
uma utilização responsável e cívica dos livros desta biblioteca, sendo nossa convicção que o mesmo será acarinhado por
