águas memórias
The thing is that we were born and bred in
cities erected around rivers, like most
cities that popped up around the midSouth of Brazil. The borders of
Tupaciguara, Minas Gerais, Andrea’s
hometown, are drawn by the Paranaíba,
which was once a river and is now a
reservoir and whose waters flow into the
Paraná, running southwards towards the
ocean. In the hometowns of Conversa
Ribeira’s other members, the river is not
only present in the district but also in its
name: Jundiaí, Daniel’s hometown, is both
the tupi name for a species of fish
(jundiahy) and the name of its main river.
Mogi das Cruzes, São Paulo, João’s
hometown, mixes the Portuguese
language with an indigenous language:
mogi (m’boijy), in tupi-guaraní meaning
river of snakes. These days, these
primordial rivers, like many others,
survive by silently sighing, having shifted
from their original courses—oftentimes
polluted or hidden underground.
In the dialogue we, as proud descendents
of caipiras, propose to engage in, lives the
search for these rivers memories, these
rivers that are true springs of stories,
sounds, music—folias de reis, modas de
viola, Guaranias, cateretês, cururus,
toadas, various caipira musical rhythms...
And within this dialogue lives the
reinvention of these memories and this
folklore, in our new age and in all its
transformation. Conversa Ribeira sails in
only seemingly opposing directions,
seeking the universal while
simultaneously discovering and
recreating what is so fundamental and
particular to those who lived, and who
continue living, off these rivers.
And so we picture Águas Memórias as
two journeys that mirror each other, both
up and downstream. In both these
journeys, we touch on universal subjects:
the nostalgia for a happiness now
impossible to obtain; the pain of loving;
the tremendous force of nature and of
man; tragedy, and, ultimately, death. Also
touching on what is, to us, singular in
caipira prose in its astute and unique way
of seeing the world. Finally, we lay out the
reverberations of these contemplations in
our music.
We lend our new perspective, in our
latest album, to a repertoire where
every song is a universe in itself, with
its own characters and narrative, a
certain sonority and expressive
language. Together, they echo the
diversity and richness of caipira
culture, thereby constructing a
whole that ranges from songs by the
genre’s greatest composers (Zé
Carreiro, Carreirinho, João Pacífico,
Raul Torres, Zé Fortuna, Tião
Carreiro, Lourival dos Santos), to
those by renowned MPB artists who
are sensitive to the ancestral depth
of those cultures that live in Brazil’s
interior (Milton Nascimento, Dori
Caymmi, Lupicínio Rodrigues, João
Pernambuco), thereby revealing a
certain vitality in the presentation of
new compositions alongside a new
generation of artists (Rogerio Santos,
Zaca de Oliveira, Luis Felipe Gama)
who are concerned with bringing
their roots to fruition.
Trajectory
Stitching together Andrea dos
Guimarães’ vocals, João Paulo Amaral’s
viola caipira and vocals, and Daniel
Muller’s piano and accordion, the trio
continues down their chosen, since their
inception in 2002. Conversa Ribeira
reaps the benefits of a fertile trajectory,
having played concerts throughout
Brazil as well as internationally,
representing Brazil in festivals in both
Mexico and Portugal. After releasing
their first album in 2007, the trio was
selected to participate in two important
programs, the Projeto Pixinguinha
(FUNARTE, 2007) and the Rumos Itau
Cultural (2008) program. In 2011, the
trio won the Innovation Award at the
Festival Voa Viola . They later shared
the stage in 2012 with the Municipal
Orchestra of Jundiaí, arranging the
music for the group in order to better
incorporate the string orchestra to
Conversa Ribeira’s unique conception
of caipira music. Throughout the band’s
trajectory, they have played alongside
such contemporary and renowned
artists as Guinga, Monica Salmaso and
Paulo Freire.
