:: Esq. para direita:: left to right: Cadeira/chair ‘Portuguesa’; Hospital Mirandela, Portugal 1960/70; Miguel Costa Rodrigues, CEO; Armário para instrumentos/Instrument cabinet 214ª; Cadeira/chair ‘Ava’. 59 Sentido horário:: Clockwise: Conjunto/set ‘Estrela’; Cadeira/chair ‘Butterfly’; The Oporto Show 2010 (Junho/June) ; Mesa escolar/school table ‘Tina’; Cadeira/chair ‘Ama’; Marquesa ginecológica polifuncional/polyfunctional gynecological examination couch 1606. Perhaps this isn’t known by many, but the history of Adico, which celebrates its 90th anniversary this year, blends almost imperceptibly into the collective imagination of 20th century Portugal. This metal mechanics company was founded in 1920 by Commander Adelino Dias Costa, as an industry dedicated to the production of iron beds. Just a decade later, it had mastered sophisticated technologies which enabled it to branch out into different areas of activity including hospital equipment, such as the production of hydraulic operating tables. It was at this time that the first line in chairs and tables for outside terraces was produced, with the launch of the emblematic ‘Portuguesa’ chair, which to this day can be seen all over our cities. With 350 workers, it became the leader in exports to the ex-colonies in the 1940s, transforming it into the largest Portuguese producer of hospital furniture. Finally, in the 1990s, it began to specialise in the creation of new models of chairs for indoor and outdoor use, particularly in the clinic, hotel and school sector. The integration of values such as ergonomics, functionality and the quality of materials embody a philosophy inspired by excellence, innovation and the challenges of contemporary design, as seen in the competitions presented in the last two editions of THE OPORTO SHOW, promoted among young designers with the aim of publicising and rewarding creativity, while also stimulating national industrial design. ::
