CSUN and the National Center on Deafness (NCOD) take pride in being the largest and best mainstream university program for deaf and hard of hearing students west of the Mississippi River! Per the CSUN mantra, we are focused on our students and recognized nationally. We take great pride in the quality of our staff. NCOD also employs deaf and hard of hearing students as teaching/service assistants, tutorial center tutors, technological assistants, library assistants, captionists and front desk assistants, which gives them great career opportunities and helps to make their resumes sing. The NCOD Tutorial Center, now in its 4th year, has achieved certification through the National Tutoring Association. The increasing numbers of students utilizing its many strands of training is a testimony to the contribution of this program to their academic success. NCOD also receives small grants to provide students with career education and with training in mentoring/tutoring school-age deaf and hard of hearing students in nearby schools. The Deaf CSUNians is a dynamic organization offering various opportunities for leadership and community service. Early November they hosted a 3-day National Deaf College Student Leadership Conference for students from all over the USA. Speakers included Howard Rosenblum (NAD), Leah Katz-Hernandez (DYUSA), Sheri Farinha (NorCal), Julie Rems Smario (DeafHope/CSDF), Flavia Fleischer (CSUN) and Kavita Pipalia (KODA-West). The presidents of student body organizations from CSUN/DC, Gallaudet and NTID also presented on a panel. The conference was a roaring educational and entertaining success; students gained much from seeing leaders and each other in action. Pictured here are some members of the 2011 National Student Leadership Conference Committee. 1 The 2011 Sign n Run event occurred at two sites, with thanks to our fantastic alumni in Sacramento and their supporters. Mark April 15, 2012 for this year’s phenomenal 5K Sign n’ Run Festival. CSUN NCOD was awarded the 2011-2016 National Postsecondary Network federal grant from the U.S. Department of Education. We are ecstatic about this. For more info, www.pepnet.org. Kudos to Catherine McLeod and her fabulous team, located in Minnesota, Wisconsin, Montana and Texas as well as at CSUN.
