Há uma nova voz cultural no Algarve. Chamase «Kulturpunkt» e nasceu há cerca de um
mês e meio da vontade de criar eventos-ponte
entre a cultura alemã e a cultura portuguesa. A
sua dinamizadora é Catrin George, uma alemã
residente há 14 anos no Sul de Portugal. O
projecto é abrangente e quer envolver os vários
agentes culturais da região. Fora de portas, para
já, conta com o apoio da associação luso-alemã
de Berlim (a maior do país, juntamente com a de
Hamburgo), que representa no Algarve.
There is a new cultural voice in the Algarve. It calls
itself “Kulturpunkt” and came into being around six
weeks ago through the wish to create events bridging
both German and Portuguese cultures. The force behind
the initiative is Catrin George, a German resident in
southern Portugal for the last 14 years. It’s an ambitious
undertaking as she means to involve the various cultural
agents of the region. For the time being, Kulturpunkt is
backed by the Luso-German association of Berlin (the
largest in the country, along with a similar association in
Hamburg), which it represents in the Algarve.

Es gibt einen neuen Partner für Kulturveranstaltungen in
der Algarve. Der Name der vor etwa eineinhalb Monaten
gegründeten Organisation lautet «Kulturpunkt». Ihr Ziel ist der
Brückenschlag zwischen der deutschen und der portugiesischen
Kultur. Initiatorin ist die Deutsche Catrin George, die seit 14
Jahren im Süden Portugals lebt. Das Projekt ist vielseitig und
beabsichtigt die verschiedenen Kulturvermittler in der Region
einbinden. Bisher kann das Projekt auf die Unterstützung der
in der Algarve vertretenen deutsch-portugiesischen Gesellschaft
e.V. aus Berlin zählen (die gemeinsam mit der Hamburger
Gesellschaft die größte derartige Organisation im Land ist).

“Neste momento estamos a criar uma rede com artistas,
associações e instituições que já têm os seus próprios
eventos culturais. Por exemplo, a Deutsche Schule Algarve
(DSA), a Tertúlia de Aljezur, o município de Lagoa e a
Quinta dos Vales. A ideia é ajudar-nos mutuamente na
divulgação. Todos nós temos um nicho, uma audiência.
Contudo, se fizermos a divulgação em conjunto,
ganharemos mais público”, diz.
“Às vezes tenho a sensação que a comunidade
estrangeira em geral, fica muito fechada em si própria.
Contudo, com os poucos eventos que já organizámos,
observei que o bilingue é um atractivo para as pessoas,
quer portugueses, quer estrangeiros. A cultura, a arte,
a música é um bom elo de ligação. Nestes eventos, as
pessoas comunicam e tentam entender-se. Penso que
esta é uma boa base para colmatar essa separação”. No
prelo, está uma colaboração com o conhecido cantor e
declamador Afonso Dias. “Há muita poesia portuguesa
que está traduzida para o alemão. Temos o Rui Belo,
que é um dos mais contemporâneos, mas também os
clássicos como Camões, Eugénio de Andrade e Florbela
Espanca só para citar alguns. Boas traduções. Penso que
será muito interessante fazermos recitais em ambas as
línguas. Mesmo que as pessoas não dominem um dos
idiomas, é engraçado brincar com o som, ver e ouvir
as diferenças. É uma experiência boa, com música à
mistura”, diz.
“Em Maio, vamos apoiar a divulgação de uma peça de
teatro da DSA em língua alemã: Frau Müller muss weg,
de Lutz Hübner. É um projecto da professora Carola Luy
com os alunos da classe 8. Mais tarde, se houver acordo
entre pais e professores, talvez a possamos repetir em
Lagos ou Aljezur”. Está marcada para 18 de Maio.
Um dia antes, “no ISMAT, em Portimão, vamos ter uma
colaboração com o genealogista Nuno Campos Inácio.
“Right now, we are creating a network with artists, associations and
institutions that already stage their own cultural events. For example,
the DSA (Deutsche Schule Algarve), the Tertúlia de Aljezur, the
borough of Lagoa and Quinta dos Vales. The idea is to help all of us
mutually with promotion. All of us have a niche, an audience - thus, if
we do our promotion together, we will get more of a following.
“Sometimes, I feel that the foreign community in general remains
very much closed in on itself. Yet, with the few events that we have
organised this far, I’ve seen that people enjoy speaking another
language - whether they’re German or foreigners. Culture, art and
music provide excellent links in this connection. At our events, people
communicate with each other and try and understand each other.
I think it is a very good basis for breaking down the boundaries that
separate us”.
One plan for the future is collaboration with the well known singer
and reciter of poetry Afonso Dias.
“There is a lot of Portuguese poetry that has been translated
into German. There’s Ruy Belo and Eugénio de Andrade, both
contemporary poets, but also classical poets like Camões, Florbela
Espanca and others have been translated, very well. I think, for
instance, it would be very interesting to do recitals in both languages.
Even if people don’t speak one of the languages, it is fun to play with
the sounds, and see and hear the differences. With music added into
the mix, it is a good experience”, she adds.
“In May, we’ll be supporting a play by the Deutsche Schule Algarve,
performed in German. Frau Müller muss weg, by Lutz Hübner. It is
a play put on by teacher Carola Luy with pupils from class 8. If the
teachers and parents agree, we may repeat the performance in Lagos
or Aljezur”. “On 17th May, at ISMAT in Portimão and in collaboration
with genealogist Nuno Campos Inácio we’ll be presenting the first in
a series of books that he’s writing on the town. We’ll be making the
presentation in both languages, and thus joining different audiences
in one event. It will be interesting because a lot of people have
Portimão in their hearts - lots of nostalgia for the way it was in times
gone by”.
“Momentan sind wir dabei ein Netzwerk aus Künstlern und
Institutionen zu schaffen, die bereits ihre eigenen Kulturveranstaltungen
durchführen, wie zum Beispiel die Deutsche Schule Algarve (DSA), die
Tertúlia aus Aljezur, der Bezirk Lagoa und die Quinta dos Vales. Dahinter
steht die Idee, sich bei der Werbung für die jeweilige Veranstaltung
gegenseitig zu unterstützen. Wir alle haben bereits unseren festen
Nischenplatz, unser festes Publikum. Wenn wir uns nun künftig
gegenseitig bei der Bekanntmachung unterstützen, so werden wir alle
noch mehr Publikum bekommen“, sagt sie.
Ich habe manchmal den Eindruck, dass die ausländische Gemeinde im
Allgemeinen meist unter sich bleibt. Bei den wenigen Veranstaltungen,
die wir bereits durchgeführt haben, konnte ich jedoch beobachten, dass
die Zweisprachigkeit sowohl für Portugiesen als auch für Ausländer
attraktiv ist. Kultur, Kunst und Musik sind ideale Bindeglieder für einen
solchen Austausch. Bei derartigen Veranstaltungen kommunizieren die
Menschen und versuchen sich gegenseitig zu verstehen. Ich glaube das
ist eine gute Ausgangslage, um die Trennung aufzulösen. Geplant ist die
Zusammenarbeit mit dem bekannten Sänger und Vortragkünstler Afonso
Dias. “
Es gibt sehr viele portugiesische Gedichte, die ins Deutsche übersetzt
wurden. Da sind zum Beispiel Rui Belo, einer der zeitgenössischeren
Dichter, aber auch Klassiker wie Camões, Eugénio de Andrade und
Florbela Espanca, um nur einige zu nennen. Gute Übersetzungen.
Ich glaube es wäre sehr interessant, Lesungen in beiden Sprachen
durchzuführen. Selbst wenn die Leute nicht beide Sprachen
beherrschen, ist es schön, sich am Klang zu erfreuen, die Unterschiede
zu sehen und zu hören und gemischt mit Musik, ergibt das ein schönes
Kulturerlebnis“, sagt sie.
Im Mai werden wir die Aufführung des deutschsprachigen Theaterstücks
„Frau Müller muss weg“ von Lutz Hübner an der DSA mit Pressearbeit
unterstützen. Es ist ein Projekt, dass die Lehrerin Carola Luy mit den
Schülern der 8. Klasse realisiert. Wenn Lehrer und Eltern einverstanden
sind, könnte das Stück später vielleicht auch in Lagos oder Aljezur
wiederholt werden. Die Premiere findet am 18. Mai statt.

Será a apresentação do primeiro de uma série de livros
sobre a cidade que ele está a escrever. Vamos fazer uma
apresentação bilíngue e juntar diferentes audiências
no evento. Será interessante, porque muita gente tem
Portimão no coração, tem muita nostalgia de como a cidade
costumava ser”, diz.
Ao contrário do que acontece com o Inglês, idioma há
muito sem barreiras, na comunicação social portuguesa
(rádio, televisão e até imprensa), o alemão não tem muitos
pontos de contacto com Portugal. “Sim, é verdade. Mas
penso que isso é uma tendência que se está a inverter.
Recentemente falei com a representante do Centro de
Línguas, Cultura e Comunicação (CLCC) em Portimão, e
neste momento têm mais alunos portugueses interessados
nos cursos de alemão. É uma evolução nova diferente.
Há cada vez mais gente a aprender alemão e russo como
terceira língua”, diz.
Questionada sobre a comunidade alemã residente, George
vê uma tendência para o decréscimo. “Neste momento
vejo uma evolução negativa. Há uma tendência de saída,
especialmente reformados que estão a regressar à Alemanha
para perto das famílias. Em relação à geração mais jovem,
também há uma tendência de regressar porque faltam
perspectivas de trabalho. Sobretudo aqui no Algarve. Em
Lisboa, penso que as coisas estão mais estáveis.”
Recentemente, a «Kulturpunkt» trouxe ao Algarve
o escritor austríaco Andreas Gruber, autor do livro
«Rachesommer/Verão do Medo» que foi traduzido e
publicado no mercado brasileiro.
“O mercado na Alemanha está a crescer. Há uma grande
tendência no mercado livreiro alemão que está a apostar
em autores de língua portuguesa, sobretudo brasileiros. Em
Portugal, acho que há uma lacuna no romance policial, e
neste âmbito, penso que vamos ter alguns novos autores
alemães traduzidos para português”.
Perguntamos-lhe de onde vem o seu interesse pela
cultura? “Essa é uma história engraçada. Sempre fui uma
pessoa interessada em geografia, literatura, história e
línguas. Um dia, estava em Aljezur no festival da batatadoce, que não é um fruto europeu e perguntei a mim mesma
de onde teria vindo? Comecei a pesquisar e descobri que as
romãs, os dióspiros, as nêsperas, os feijões e até as oliveiras
e o medronho não são originários daqui”. “Fui à procura de
lendas e das ligações ao tempo do Infante D. Henrique, e
mais para a frente, e encontrei um fio para contar a história
de Portugal através da gastronomia”.
As suas pesquisas deram origem a uma série de artigos
publicados na revista «Entdecken Sie Algarve». E ainda este
ano, George vai editar um livro inédito no mercado alemão
(está a negociar com várias editoras interessadas), com o
título «Algarve seduz-me». “O livro contém apontamentos
sobre o imaginário do Algarve e das suas gentes, e contém
passeios literários e culturais no barlavento. É uma
abordagem apaixonada à região”
E o Algarve seduz a Alemanha? “Temos de fazer a pergunta
ao contrário. Porque é que Portugal e o Algarve não se
representam melhor no estrangeiro? E há outra questão. Nas
minhas pesquisas, cada vez que escrevo para uma junta de
freguesia ou câmara municipal, por exemplo, a perguntar
sobre o património histórico, quase nunca apanho uma
resposta”.
Catrin George crítica também a postura dos municípios, de
costas voltadas, para os eventos dos vizinhos. “E quando as
regiões não funcionam, como pode funcionar tudo?”
Uma última pergunta: a Alemanha não é vista com bons
olhos nos dias que correm. George desdramatiza: “Sempre
fui bem-vinda aqui e gosto de cá viver. Há dias li um artigo
de opinião no jornal espanhol «El Pais», cujo título chamava
Hitler à senhora Merkel. Acho que é um grande insulto. A
imprensa moderna deve basear-se em factos, em pesquisa
de fundo, e não em polémicas”.

Contrary to what happens with English - a language which
for a long time has been heard on Portuguese radio, television
and even in the press - the German language doesn’t have
many points of contact with Portugal. “That’s right,” agrees
Catrin. “But I think it is a tendency that’s changing. I spoke
recently with the person in charge of the CLCC (language and
cultural centre) of Portimão, and right now there are more
Portuguese pupils interested in learning German. This is new.
There are more people learning German, with Russian as a
third language.”
Questioned over the resident German community, Catrin
sees it on the decline. “At the moment, I see a negative
evolution. People are leaving, particularly retired people who
are returning to Germany to be with their families. With regard
to young people, with families, there is also a new tendency to
return due to lack of work - particularly here
in the Algarve. In Lisbon, I think, things are
more stable”.
Recently, Kulturpunkt brought Austrian
writer Andreas Gruber to the Algarve. He is
the author of “Rachesommer/ Verão de Medo”
(Summer of Fear), which has been translated
and released on the Brazilian market.
“The German market is growing. There is a
growing sector in the publishing world that
likes Portuguese authors, as well as those
from Brazil. In Portugal, there’s a real dearth
of police novels, I feel, and so we’re going
to get some new German authors’ books
translated into Portuguese”.
We ask Catrin George where she got her
interest in culture? “That’s a funny story. I
have always been interested in geography,
literature, history and languages. One day I
was in Aljezur, at the sweet potato festival. Now, the sweet
potato isn’t from Europe, so I asked myself where it came
from. I began doing some research, and I discovered that
pomegranates, prickly pears, crab-apples, beans, and even
olive trees and medronho bushes did not originate in Portugal!
I looked into stories and legends from the time of Henry the
Navigator and I found a thread by which one could tell the
story of Portugal via gastronomy...”
Her research resulted in a series of articles published in the
German language magazine here, “Entdecken Sie Algarve”.
Later this year, Catrin will be publishing a book for the German
market, with new stuff under the title “Algarve seduz-me”.
She is currently negotiating with various publishing houses
that are interested, she tells us.
So does the Algarve seduce Germany? “We have to ask that
question the other way around! Why is it that Portugal and the
Algarve don’t promote themselves better abroad? And there’s
another question. When I am researching, every time I write
to a parish council, or a town council, and pose say historic/
heritage questions, I almost never get a reply!”
Catrin George also criticises the way municipalities fail to
support events being staged by neighbouring authorities.
“While regions don’t function together, how can anything
function?”
A final question: People right now aren’t wild about Germany,
are they? George makes light of the situation: “I have always
been made very welcome here. A few days ago, I read an
opinion article in the Spanish newspaper “El Pais”, the title of
which called Angela Merkel Hitler. I think that is a huge insult.
The modern press here should base itself on facts, in research
- not pander to controversies.”
Einen Tag zuvor, werden wir in Zusammenarbeit mit dem Ahnenforscher
Nuno Campos Inácio, im ISMAT in Portimão, sein Buch „Portimão – cidade
com hístoria“ vorstellen. „Geplant ist eine zweisprachige Präsentation
und Interpretation. Das wird sehr interessant, denn viele Menschen haben
Portimão ins Herz geschlossen, vor allem die Nostalgie hinsichtlich der
Vergangenheit dieser Stadt“, sagt sie.
Anders als die englische Sprache, die geringeren Beschränkungen in der
sozialen Kommunikation Portugals (im Radio, Fernsehen und in der Presse)
unterliegt, gibt es für die deutsche Sprache nur wenige Anknüpfungspunkte in
Portugal. „Ja, das ist richtig. Ich glaube jedoch, dass das eine Tendenz ist, die
sich gerade wandelt. Ich sprach kürzlich mit der Repräsentantin des Centro de
Línguas, Cultura e Comunicaçao (CLCC) in Portimão und derzeit ist die Zahl
der Portugiesen, die sich für Deutschkurse interessieren, zunehmend. Das ist
eine neue Entwicklung. Immer mehr Leute lernen Deutsch oder Russisch als
dritte Sprache. Über die hier lebende deutsche Gemeinschaft befragt, sieht
George eine rückläufige Tendenz. „Momentan beobachte ich
eine negative Entwicklung. Es gibt eine Tendenz das Land zu
verlassen, besonders bei Pensionären, die nach Deutschland
zurückgehen, um in der Nähe ihrer Familien zu leben. Auch
bei der jungen Generation, bei den Familien, gibt es eine
Tendenz zurückzugehen, weil die beruflichen Perspektiven
fehlen - vor allem hier in der Algarve. In Lissabon ist die
Lage, glaube ich, etwas stabiler.“
Vor Kurzem hat «Kulturpunkt» den österreichischen
Schriftsteller Andreas Gruber vorgestellt, den Autor des
Buches „Rachesommer/Verão de Medo“, das für den
brasilianischen Markt übersetzt und dort veröffentlicht wurde.
“Der Markt in Deutschland wächst. Es gibt eine deutlich
zunehmende Tendenz auf dem deutschen Buchmarkt
hinsichtlich der Nachfrage nach portugiesischsprachigen
Autoren, vor allem aus Brasilien. In Portugal gibt es, so
glaube ich, eine Lücke, was Kriminalromane betrifft und
deswegen werden einige neue deutsche Autoren gerade in die
portugiesische Sprache übersetzt.“
Wir fragten sie, woher ihr Interesse für die Kultur kommt? „Das ist eine
lustige Geschichte. Ich habe mich schon immer für Geografie, Literatur,
Geschichte und Sprachen interessiert. Eines Tages war ich in Aljezur auf dem
Festival der Süßkartoffel, die keine europäische Frucht ist, und ich fragte
mich, wo sie eigentlich herkommt. Ich begann nachzuforschen und fand
heraus, dass Granatapfel, Kakifrucht, Mispel, Bohne und sogar Oliven- und
Medronhobäume ursprünglich nicht von hier stammen“. Ich begab mich auf
die Suche nach Legenden und Verbindungen, die bis in die Zeit von Heinrich
dem Seefahrer, und weiter, zurückreichen und fand einen roten Faden, um die
Geschichte Portugals anhand der Gastronomie zu erzählen.“
Ihre Nachforschungen bildeten die Grundlage für eine Artikelserie in der
Zeitschrift «Entdecken Sie Algarve». Noch in diesem Jahr wird Catrin George
einen literarischen Reisebegleiter mit dem Titel „Algarve, seduz-me“ auf den
deutschen Markt bringen (sie verhandelt derzeit mit diversen interessierten
Verlagen). Das Buch vereint verträumte Betrachtungen über die Algarve und
seine Menschen mit literarischen Kulturspaziergängen durch den Barlavento.
Und verführt die Algarve Deutschland denn? „Wir müssen diese Frage
andersherum stellen. Warum präsentieren Portugal und die Algarve sich nicht
besser im Ausland? Und es gibt eine weitere Frage: Warum bekam ich bei
meinen Nachforschungen fast nie eine Antwort auf die Briefe, die ich an die
Gemeinde- und Bezirksverwaltungen schrieb, um mich nach dem historischen
Kulturerbe zu erkundigen?“
Catrin George kritisiert auch die ignorante Haltung der Bezirke hinsichtlich
der Veranstaltungen von Nachbarbezirken. „Wenn die Regionen nicht
kooperieren, wie soll das Ganze dann funktionieren?“
Eine letzte Frage: Deutschland ist momentan nicht besonders gut
angesehen. George wiegelt ab: „Ich war hier immer willkommen und liebe es
hier zu leben. Vor einigen Tagen las ich einen Kommentar in der spanischen
Zeitung „El Pais“, in dem Frau Merkel als Hitler bezeichnet wurde. Ich halte
das für eine schwerwiegende Beleidigung. Die heutige Presse sollte sich auf
Fakten stützen, auf fundierte Recherchen und nicht auf Polemik.“
