STEVE MCCURRY (b. 1950)
BIOGRAFIA
Steve McCurry é uma das vozes mais icónicas da fotografia contemporânea desde há mais de
30 anos, com dezenas de capas de revistas e de livros, mais de uma dúzia de livros, e inúmeras
exposições à volta do mundo em seu nome.
Nascido num subúrbio de Philadelphia, Pensilvânia; McCurry estudou cinema na Universidade
Estadual da Pensilvânia, antes de ir trabalhar para um jornal local. Depois de vários anos de
trabalho como freelancer, McCurry fez a primeira do que seriam inúmeras viagens à Índia.
Viajando com pouco mais do que um saco de roupas e um outro de película, percorreu todo o
subcontinente, explorando o país com a sua câmara.
Foi depois de vários meses de viagem que se encontrou a cruzar a fronteira com o Paquistão.
Aí encontrou um grupo de refugiados do Afeganistão, que o contrabandearam através da
fronteira para o seu país, precisamente no momento em que a Invasão Russa fechava o país a
todos os jornalistas ocidentais. Aparecendo com roupas tradicionais, com barba crescida e
feições tisnadas depois de semanas a viver com o Mujahideen, McCurry trouxe ao mundo as
primeiras imagens do conflito no Afeganistão, colocando um rosto humano na questão em
cada cabeçalho.
Desde então, McCurry continuou a criar imagens espantosas em seis continentes e inúmeros
países. O seu trabalho abrange do mesmo modo conflitos, culturas em desaparecimento,
tradições antigas e cultura contemporânea - e contudo retém sempre o elemento humano,
que tornou tão poderosa a sua conhecida imagem da Rapariga Afegã.
McCurry foi reconhecido com alguns dos mais prestigiados prémios do sector, incluindo a
Medalha de Ouro Robert Capa, o National Press Photographers Award, e uns inéditos quatro
primeiros prémios no concurso World Press Photo. O Ministro da Cultura Francês também
nomeou McCurry Cavaleiro da Ordem das Artes e Letras e, mais recentemente, a Royal
Photographic Society em Londres concedeu McCurry a Centenary Medal for Lifetime
Achievement.
