I - DESCRIPTION OF PORTUGAL
Portugal is in south-western Europe and forms part of the Iberian Peninsula. It is the most westerly
country of Europe, and is bordered by the Atlantic Ocean to the West and South and by Spain to the
North and East. It also includes the Atlantic islands of the Azores and Madeira. .
Total Area: 92,090 km² (including the islands of the Azores and Madeira)
Population: 10,561,614 (of whom 52% are female and 48% male).
Capital: Lisbon
Official Language: Portuguese
Monetary unit: Euro

Sport Sciences School of Rio Maior
The regions of Portugal are very different from each other, and the lush forests and mountain ranges of
the north and centre contrast greatly with the arid plains and beaches of the south. In general it has a
temperate climate all year round with long hot summers, warm spring and autumn months and relatively
mild winters, although temperatures and climatic conditions vary because of the regional disparities.
Portugal’s southerly latitude accounts for its Mediterranean climate. In the summer months there are
perfect beach days and many hours of sunshine, with temperatures averaging 28ºC in Lisbon and often
going into the high 30’s.
The highest temperatures are felt in inland areas, especially in the Alentejo and central and north-eastern
Portugal, where the cooling effects of the winds blowing off the sea are not felt as they are in the Algarve
and the western coastal areas. Sea temperatures are considerably higher in the Algarve than on the
western coast.
Winters are mild by northern European standards, with temperatures averaging 10ºC in Porto, 12ºC in
Lisbon and seldom-reaching freezing point at sea level. Algarve winters are especially mild, with average
temperatures of 15ºC and considerably less rainfall than in the north. Most of Portugal’s rainfall occurs
from November to March, and there are always heavier falls in the greener and more mountainous north.
Snow is very rare in Portugal except in the mountainous areas in the north-east and on Portugal’s highest
mountain range, the Serra da Estrela, where Portugal’s only ski resort is located.
The spring and autumn months bring lovely mild weather. That is a perfect time to travel around the
interior and to see the blossoming countryside in spring and the grape harvests in autumn. Any showers
are usually light.
