Selection Process for PhD in Neuroscience and Cognition
The Postgraduate Course in Neuroscience and Cognition (PPG-NC) at Federal
University of ABC - UFABC announces the registration for the selection of candidates
for admission to the Doctorate "stricto sensu" scheduled to begin in February 2012,
and establishes standards and procedures for the selection process.
1. GENERAL DISPOSITIONS
1.1. To register in the selection process, applicants must provide evidence, at the time
of application, that completion of university degree in any area of knowledge will be
achieved by the date of enrollment in the course.
1.2. Selection and classification are based on steps which may be made in person or
remotely (stages I, II and III). The candidate should select the corresponding option in
the registration form. Candidates who opt for the test without attending in person are
responsible for the availability of a computer capable of using software applications,
preferably Skype (the candidate must specify the time of registration), a webcam and
broadband Internet connection. The event will be held solely and exclusively in
Portuguese or English, as defined by the candidate on the registration form. The steps
of this process include:
I. Test of English proficiency;
II. Discussion on the research project, to be presented at registration;
III. Interview about CV and evidentiary documents;
IV. * Analysis of curriculum;
V. * Analysis of academic grades;
VI. * Analysis of recommendation letters;

1.2.1. The English proficiency test (score from zero to ten for each of them separately)
will be held in a unit of UFABC and may be replaced by one of the following tests:

GRE General (with minimum scores of 450 for Verbal Reasoning and 580 for
Quantitative subscores), TOEFL or IELTS. The replacement will occur only at the
request of the applicant on the application form, after submission of certification
documents and their analysis by the Selection Committee.
1.2.2. The discussion of the research project, which will be held in voice recorded
session, will focus on the candidate’s knowledge of the proposed theme and on its
compatibility with the research program of PPG-NC, The Graduate Program in
Neuroscience and Cognition will provide a multimedia projector for presentation. The
test will consist of the oral presentation of the research proposal (which must be
submitted in writing at registration for the selection process), which should last
between 10 (ten) and 15 (fifteen) minutes, to be held to a board composed of 3 (three)
assessors. Examiners will evaluate: organizational skills, clarity, objectivity and
relevance of the content presented about the research proposal. Each examiner will
assign a grade from 0 (zero) to 10 (ten), from which the final grade is obtained by
simple arithmetic average.
1.2.3. The interview will be held following the project discussion and aims to determine
any questions regarding documentation submitted by the candidate, which will be
based on the analysis of the curriculum previously submitted on registering, and
considering the following items:
• Academic titles;
• Scientific production: articles in scientific journals, book chapters, abstracts in
conference proceedings, presentations at scientific or academic meetings and
participation in scientific events;
• Courses and complementary activities related to the theme of the Graduate Program
in Neuroscience and Cognition;
• Work experience in areas related to the Graduate Program in Neuroscience and
Cognition.
1.2.4. The analysis of curriculum, academic records and recommendation letters will
be held in closed session in which only members of the selection committee will
participate. Candidates should provide copies of evidentiary documentation. Failure to
submit evidentiary documentation (curriculum presented) at the time of registration will
result in the corresponding item being considered as missing and unscored.

1.3. The minimum passing grade on the partial evaluations is 6.0 (six). The minimum
passing grade on the final average is 7.0 (seven). The following proportions are
applied:
Project discussion (weight 2)
Interview (weight 1)
Analysis of curriculum, academic records and recommendation letters (weight 2)
English proficiency (weight 1)
The final grade average will be calculated according to the weights described in
section 1.3.
1.4. The acceptance by a supervisor is necessary, to be forwarded in writing by the
supervisor via institutional e-mail to: [email protected] until the application
deadline. Upon enrolling, the applicant must present a printed copy of the e-mail sent
by the supervisor at the time of registration.
1.5. There is no registration fee for the selection process.
1.6. The selection process will be coordinated by the Selection Committee; the
Commission will be chaired by a member of the Coordination of the program.
2. SCHEDULE
2.1 The time schedule for application, selection and start of the classes for the first
quarter of 2012 is presented below.
Deadline for registration: October 20 to November 18, 2011
Disclosure of approved applications: November 25, 2011
Deadline for appeals against rejected applications: November 28, 2011
Outcome of appeals: November 30, 2011
English proficiency test: December 2, 2011
Results of English proficiency test: December 7, 2011
Project discussion and Interview: December 12, 2011
Disclosure of final results: December 15, 2011

Adjustment of enrollment: Feb. 6 to Feb. 8, 2012

Classes start February 6, 2012.
3. VACANCIES
3.1 Three (3) doctorate vacancies are available. The exact number of vacancies may
be altered depending upon the availability of suitable candidates in the context of this
Notice.
4. REGISTRATION
4.1. To register for the selection process, the applicant must submit the following
documents:
I. Application form duly completed, according to the document on the website:

II. Copy of CPF and RG;
III. RNE, in the case of foreign applicant (in case the applicant does not possess an
RNE identification, a copy of the passport will be accepted for registration,);
IV. Copy of academic grade record;
V. If the applicant has completed courses in graduate school, copy of certificate (s) (s)
and their conclusion (s) record (s);
VI. Updated resume of the candidate;
VII. Two letters of recommendations, instructions available on the website:

The cited documents should be sent in digital format in a single compressed file to the
e-mail [email protected]. The subject line should be "doctoral selection
process: registration" followed by the full name of the candidate; alternatively,
documents can be submitted in a sealed envelope or sent through a package delivery
service, with postage stamp before 18 hours (eighteen hours, 6h00 pm) on November

5. EVALUATION PROCESS
5.1. Selection Criteria:
The selection process for entry into the Postgraduate course in Cognitive
Neuroscience is prepared and conducted by the Selection Committee composed of
UFABC faculty members. The selection criteria and classification are based on:
I. Proficiency in an English language test;
II. Discussion of the research project presented at registration;
III. Interview about resume and supporting documents;
IV. Analysis of curriculum*;
V. Analysis of Transcript*;
VI. Analysis of recommendation letters*;
* Steps only in the presence of selection committee
5.1.1. Project discussion: Candidates must present the research project in 20 to 30
minutes and will be questioned by a jury, indicated by the Selection Committee (in
person or by application programs, preferably Skype, with video mode and screen
sharing) on issues relating to the project submitted at registration. The examiners shall
have fifteen (15) minutes to perform the discussion.
5.1.2. Interview: The interview will be conducted by a UFABC faculty member (in
person or through programs / applications, preferably Skype with video) based on the
curriculum and copies of documents and certificates (of the activities described in the
curriculum) presented at registration. Candidates arriving late or who or not connected
at the scheduled time for the interview will be disqualified.

5.1.3. Recommendation letters: Recommendation letters should be sent to the e-mail:
[email protected] directly by the person recommending the candidate,
preferably through a professional or institutional email account. The subject line should
be "PhD Recommendation" followed by the full name of the candidate. Letters should
be sent during the registration period. The letters that arrive after the registration
period will not be considered in the selection process.
5.1.4. English proficiency test: Testing session will be held in UFABC. If the applicant
has any certificate of English proficiency, he/she must present it with the application
documents, dated maximally 5 (five) years before the date of registration, or proof of
birth in English-speaking country and Portuguese proficiency. Will be accepted as
proof of English proficiency:
• GRE General Exam (with minimum scores of 450 Verbal and 580 Quantitative);
• TOEFL test with minimum score of 79-80 points is performed over the Internet, and
by 213 points to 550 points computer or on paper;
• IELTS, with a minimum of 6.0 points.
Applicants that prove residence in an English-speaking country for more than 2 (two)
years do not need to present a certificate of proficiency.
6. CLASSIFICATION OF CANDIDATES
6.1 Candidates of the selection process will be automatically disqualified and excluded
if they:
I. make false statements or submit false documents in any of the stages of selection;
II. do not submit all documentation required under the terms and conditions set forth in
this notice;
III. do not present themselves for the project discussion in the specified, time and
location specified.
IV. do not present themselves for the interview at the specified date, time and location.
It is the responsibility of the applicant to monitor the publication of all acts, notices and
communications related to the process disclosed in the official webpage of the Federal

7. FINAL RESULT
The final classification, in order of priority for allocation of scholarships, will be
published on the site of the PPG-NC program on the Internet at the address
http://ppgnc.ufabc.edu.br/.
8. REGISTRATION
Selected candidates in the selection process should enroll in the Graduate Office,
located on the campus of St. André - Universidade Federal do ABC - Block B, 8th
floor, from 30 January to 3 February 2012.
Registration must be made in person or by simple letter of delegation (handwritten),
upon presentation of an original document with photo identification of the
representative.
For registration the following documents should be submitted (original and a simple
copy - front and back):
1. RG;
2. RNE or passport with student visa (only for foreign students);
3. CPF;
4. Certificate of reserves for male candidates;
5. Marriage Certificate if applicable;
6. Updated proof of residence with zip code;
7. Electoral title with 02 (two) recent proof of voting or election proof of discharge;
8. Graduate Diploma (duplex) or provisional Certificate / Certificate of Graduation;
(Diploma is essential for the issue of graduate doctoral degree)
9. History of the Graduate School;
10. Application for Registration obtained via the "Student Portal", signed by Student
and Mentor;
11. General Registration Form completed by the student, available in the "Student
Portal";

12. Form Status information in the course / scholarship completed by the student,
available in the "Student Portal" (Fill to all students);
13. Declaration Form of Acceptance of the regiment of the course completed and
signed by Student, available in the "Student Portal";
14. Form of Acceptance by the Student Advisor, completed and signed by the
Supervisor or Coordinator of the PPG-NC;
15. 01 3x4 photo;
9. SCHOLARSHIP
Students applying for scholarships and indicating the possibility of exclusive dedication
to the course (both on the registration form) compete for scholarships administered by
the coordination of the course, provided by agencies. The scholarships will be
allocated as available and in accordance with the classification of the candidates.
Disclosure of the list of students awarded scholarships is scheduled to occur at the
same time as the release of the list of successful students in the selection process.
10. FINAL DISPOSITIONS
10.1. Entry implies acceptance of the candidate selection rules contained in this
announcement and prior knowledge of the Regulations of the Graduate UFABC.
10.2. The candidate who requests an appeal of any of the terms should do so at the
time of registration, having, in writing, in the cover letter the reasons for this. Not doing
so at this moment will cancel the right to challenge the terms.
10.3. It is the responsibility of the applicant to monitor the publication of all acts,
notices and communications regarding this process, especially through the portal of
the program.
10.4. The Coordination of the course is not responsible for requests not received
within the stipulated time for reasons that do not depend on UFABC.
10.5 The applicant may request a review or appeal of any stage of the competition in
the selection process not later than 48 hours after the publication of the results on the
site http://ppgnc.ufabc.edu.br/ ; to do so, the applicant should send the request via email to: [email protected], or submit the request in the office of graduate
