Galeria Tap Seac Preface ■ Ceramic art is the quintessence of Chinese culture. During the Ming and the Qing Dynasties, ceramic products were once an important commodity in the trade between East and West. They were shipped from the port of Macao to Portugal and then to different parts of the world. Ceramic art is a source of great pride for the Chinese thanks to its fame and prestige across the world. ■ Throughout civilization, people around the world have been drawn to ceramic art. This might have something to do with our memories of playing with mud on the ground when we were young. The malleability of mud touches the childlike innocence in our hearts and sparks this primitive form of art creation. Nevertheless, in the modern world, the younger generations find it more and more difficult to enjoy the fun of this natural and economical plaything. Childhood days have become dominated by computer games instead. However, ceramic art has become more and more popular, allowing adults to recall their childhood dreams; it also provides younger people with an opportunity for fun and satisfaction in creating something tangible. ■Ceramic art seems easy to learn but it is difficult to be good at it. Yet, it is an art with the potential to shape and nurture a person into an outstanding talent: from moulding to choosing the glaze colours; from preparing the glaze to mouldmaking, to firing at different temperatures and durations for different outcomes, showing how concrete objects can express connotations in an abstract way – all these involve knowledge of art, chemistry, physics, ethnology and philosophy. In this exhibition, we have invited several prominent modern ceramicists from Hong Kong and Macao to display their works. We have also invited art lovers to present their latest ceramic pieces. Besides promoting the quintessence of Chinese culture, we also hope that through the exchange of ideas, artists from Hong Kong and Macao will have closer ties, leading to mutual learning and elevating the level of comtemporary ceramic art. ■It is impossible to repeat past realities in real life. We can do nothing but describe or mimic it in various ways. Moulding is my way of depicting reality. Moulding real objects has the quality of showing “this” rather than “that”, since the dummy carries the characteristics of the original that always helps associating it with the existence of the original. ■ Moulding is in fact an act of interpretation. It changes the object into its imitation. However, the dummy can never be the original. The difference between the original and its dummy then leaves a space for the artist’s imagination and ideas. Da Mão à Colher From Hand to Spoon 尹麗娟 Annie, Wan Lai Kuen 010 100cm x 6cm x 20cm 電窰、氧化燒 Mufla Eléctrica, Queima por Oxidação Electric Kiln, Oxidation Firing 2003 罐 頭 魚 的 想 像 —— 有 心 的 罐 頭 魚 、 有 性 的 罐 頭 魚 、 會 哭 的 罐 頭 魚 P e i x e d e C o n s e r v a – O P e i x e d e C o n s e r v a Te m C o r a ç ã o , O P e i x e d e C o n s e r v a Te m S e x o , O P e i x e d e C o n s e r v a P o d e C h o r a r Canned Fish – Canned Fish Have Hearts, Canned Fish Have Sex, Canned Fish Can Cr y 尹麗娟 Annie, Wan Lai Kuen 012 @4cm x 10cm 電窰、氧化燒 Mufla Eléctrica, Queima por Oxidação Electric Kiln, Oxidation Firing 2004 何 兆 聰 Simon, Ho Siu Chong ■學歷 ■加拿大溫哥華艾美尼卡美術學士 ■加拿大諾省美術學院美術碩士 ■展覽 ■ 2004 團體展「澳門現代陶藝創作 5 人展」,澳門龍環葡韻住宅式博物館 ■ 2001 個人展「從這裏到這裏」,澳門千禧畫廊 ■ 2001 團體展「亞洲傳統月」,列治文美術館,加拿大 ■ 2001 團體展「台灣金陶獎」,台北,中國 ■ 2000 團體展「旅程」加拿大全國陶藝雙年展,魁北克省,加拿大 ■ 1998/1999 個人展「01」,安娜美術館,哈里法斯 ■ 1997 團體展「97 年亞太經合會議加拿大作品展」,溫哥華貿易及會議中心 ■ 1996 團體展「費察陶藝獎」奧克蘭博物館,新西蘭 ■ 1996 個展「大自然與感覺」,溫哥華卑詩省陶藝美術館 ■ 1995 團體展「Echoes 95」,人類學博物館,溫哥華 ■ 1993 團體展「Jug: Pitcher, Dippers and Metaphors」,加拿大手工藝博物館,溫哥華 ■ Educação ■ Mestrado pelo Nova Scotia College of Art and Design, Halifax, Canadá. ■ Licenciatura em Belas-Artes pelo Emily Carr Institute of Art and Design, Vancouver, Canadá. ■ Exposições ■ 2004 Exposição colectiva “Cerâmica Contemporânea – Cinco Artistas de Macau”, Casas-Museu da Taipa, Macau. ■ 2001 Exposição individual, “From Here to Here”, Galeria Milénio, Macau. ■ 2001 Exposição colectiva, Mês do Património Asiático, Richmond Art Gallery, B.C. ■This work was created in Jingdezhen. ■ Being infatuated with ceramic art for over 20 years, I believe that one must spend lots of effort when it comes to the creation of art. The inborn gift and talent is also important. Artworks reveal the vitality of an artist, who expresses his/her inner world through creating his/her own works. ■Born in Macao, Vong Chi Kao became a graphic designer in an advertising agency after graduating from secondary school. He has financed his own publications of comics and albums of drawings. He graduated from the School of Arts of the Macao Polytechnic Institute while working part-time. He was first exposed to ceramic art in school and developed a deep interest in it. He then acquired a great deal of knowledge and skills in perfecting it. Through his creations, he hopes to elevate his pottery skill. ■ To me, water is an irreplaceable element in life. It has inestimable power and different forms. Water is originally a flow of streams. It vaporizes when it is heated and freezes when chilled. Meanwhile, the most charming thing about water is that, when it drips from the eaves of a house onto the windowsills, it makes a wonderful and rhythmic sound. Nevertheless, it is very hard to find a clear pond now, because water has been contaminated and spoiled. This is the main cause inspiring the creation of this artwork. Gota de Água A Drop of Water ■ 2003 Programa de Residência da Bienal de Cerâmica, The Artists’ House, Halle, Germany. ■ 2002 East-West Ceramics Collaboration III, University of Hawaii at Manoa. ■ 1999 Bolsa de Trabalho da Starr Foundation, Conselho Cultural Asiático. ■ 1997 Mestrado em Belas Artes, Universidade Chinesa de Hong Kong. ■ 1994 Artista residente, Banff Centre for the Arts, Canadá. ■ 1991 University of East Anglia, UK, B.Ed. ■ Exposições colectivas ■ 2004 “Neither East Nor West”, East-West Centre, University of Hawaii at Manoa. ■ 2003 “Now and Now”, Cerâmica Contemporânea Mundial, Icheon World Ceramic Center, Seoul, Coreia. ■ “More Than Just Food”, Museu do Património de Hong Kong, Hong Kong. ■ 2002 Exposição de Cerâmica Contemporânea da Ásia-Pacífico por Convite, Museu de Cerâmica Taipei County Yingko. ■ Cerâmica chinesa hoje – entre a expressão tradicional e contemporânea Museu Ariana, Geneva. ■ 2001 “Hyphenation: Arte Contemporânea de Hong Kong”, Grotto Fine Art, Hong Kong. ■ Exposições individuais ■ 2004 “Pattern and Senses”, Grotto Fine Art, Hong Kong. ■ 2000 “Porcelain White – Chelsmore Apartment”, Nova Iorque. ■ 1999 “Porcelain White Studio-Flat”, Oficina de Olaria, Hong Kong. ■ 1998 “White Porcelain”, Hanart TZ Gallery, Para/Site Central, Hong Kong. ■ 1996 “Série Artistas de Hong Kong: Wong Lai-ching”, Ngau Chi Wan Civic Centre, Hong Kong. 074 ■ 1965 ■ 2003 ■ 2002 ■ 1999 ■ 1997 Born in Hong Kong. In order to establish a more profound understanding of it, we need to contact more, know better, communicate more and understand more. ■ Chair: Harmony, stability, peace and joy, are supported and balanced by trust, consideration and forgiveness. ■ Alone: The havoc caused by the merciless waves has faded away silently. People who have left are all back with joy on their faces. ■My work shows how an object can be a tool for memory. Ceramic texture is the best medium for such a tool. Memory is not only conserved, but also forgotten. The formula I adopted in the creation of works often shows a special characteristic when I express things being both forgotten and conserved at the same time. ■I mixed ready-made objects together with clay for bisque firing. The original objects incinerated during the bisque firing process while the clay fills up all the porous surface of the objects to become a thin layer of shell. This ceramic shell is not only the memory of the object but also a representation of its disappearance. ■ Conserve Memory ■ This work is about the conservation of memory. The lace fabric I used contains repeated floral patterns. I cut out the motifs and transformed them into ceramic pieces, which were then sewn back onto the holes in the fabric. The floral motifs are machine-made: each one is exactly like the others. However, after they are transformed into ceramics, they retain a likeness to their origin, yet each one differs from the others. The size of the ceramic fragments has shrunk, resulting in a more organic look. They strike an interesting contrast with their originals. 修復記憶 Conser var a Memória Conser ve Memor y 謝淑婷 S a r a , Ts e S u k T i n g 092 10cm x 200cm x 200cm Through his works, Lo explores the relationships between man, time and space. Basic forms and natural textures convey a sense of antiquity and simplicity, which in turn invite viewers to a different interpretation concerning life and spiritual matters. ■ “I believe that everything in this world is transforming, embracing unlimited changes and yet streaming to the same destination,” says Lo. “Many possibilities are co-existing throughout the process, in which they are interacting and interchanging. I am interested in both the transformation process and those related sensory experiences. A forma do trabalho é simples. ■Was he the emperor of all the time, or the nº 1 tyrant of history? There are many different views when it comes to how Shi Huangdi managed to establish and sabotage the history, culture, and different systems of China within just over a decade. What is interesting is, under these circumstances, what kind of change and distortion would exist between human nature and power? The terracotta warriors are the most humane power display of it all. Besides the immensity from the army, it was the sudden emergence of power and the insanity of domination, and also the boundless sorrow and coldness behind… ■ If “history” is the only objective documentation of “incidents”, then my “pottery puppet” reflects the imagination and interpretation I have of these relics of terracotta warriors. Through the reconstruction and reconnection of limbs, and also the construction of space, I try to examine the relationship between “to dominate” and “to be dominated”, and also the unstable changes of history in the powerful current of time. My work mainly examines the relationships between “people”, “objects” and “space of time”. The shape of the work is simple. Its textures are antiquated and primitive. Early works were mainly in the forms of combination of drawings (2-dimensional images) and pottery (3-dimensional shapes); recent works are in the forms of creations of pottery device, mixed with the use of other materials, expressing my understanding and interpretation of living and mental space. ■Yim Wai Wai nasceu em Hong Kong.
