NEW CLUB MEMBERS • William Stonebraker • Seth Wallace • Joey Woody • Chad Stone BOOK CLUB NEWS FOR SEPTEMBER 2014 One of the *most remarkable qualities of The Goldfinch “is that it arrives singed with 9/11 terror but redolent of a 19th-century novel,” Washington Post reviewer Ron Charles says of the Donna Tartt novel that stayed at the top of the New York Times list for several months late last year and is the “read” for the Book Group’s September 11 meeting. The story opened with a powerful explosion in New Yorks’ Metropolitan Museum which wounded and killed many visitors instantly. A teen-aged boy, Theo Decker, was among those who survived the terrorist’s bomb, but his mother died in the attack, from which event Theo never completely recovered. “This is, among many other things, a novel of survivor’s guilt, of living in ‘the generalized miasma of shame and unworthiness and being-a-burden,’” the reviewer explains. The book takes its title from a famous painting by Carel Fabritius, “The Goldfinch,” Theo’s mother’s favorite painting, with which he emerged from the burning gallery of the museum after the explosion. Any interested University Club member is welcome to attend Book Group meetings, for which participants gather in the Club’s Front Lounge at 6p.m. for cocktails, followed by dinner “from the menu” and discussion of the book. Reservations for the September 11 meeting must be made no later than noon Wednesday, September 10, by calling 338-5439. For their October 9 gathering, the book group will be reading The Sixth Extinction, by Elizabeth Kolbert. Questions? Call Faye Strayer, 338.2637
