INTRODUCTION
• Vulnerability in recreational settings has
not been a concern of local authorities but
there is evidence of impact on partygoer’s
health.
•A
multicentre and multidimensional
ethnographic study involving 6 Portuguese
speaking cities were done in 2014-15.
• Aim to compare the security situation in
recreational settings and partygoers risk
behaviour by photo voice and snowball
sample questionnaire.

STUDENTS
METHODOLOGY
Organization and training of a group of university students
to access vulnerability in recreational settings in 4 stages:
• 1) Observational process in the recreational areas of each
city to map recreational nightlife spaces and access
security measures using photo voice;
• 2) Semi-structured interviews with some of the regular’s
partygoers;
• 3) Observational process of the environment (physical
and social), security and safety conditions;
• 4) Online questionnaire to evaluate partygoers risk
behaviour (n= 1332) sent through social networks and
snow-ball method (inclusion criteria 16-30years and
attend recreational settings regularly).

• What vulnerabilities show the data?
• How to reduce the risk in recreational spaces in your city?
• How can intervene university to reduce the risk in the

• How can local authorities intervene to reduce the risk in the
recreational areas of your city?
• How can empower young people to reduce the risk in the
recreational areas of your city?
• What would recommend to ensure a safer night in your city?
Results show differences
between cities
All the cities have central areas with crowds
of various ages in some weekdays but
mainly at weekends

In University City’s the busiest day is on
Thursday and in others cities the weekends.
There are differences between cities
Most of the 1332
persons interviewed
were single (46,2%)
or dating someone
(42,7%) and 9,3%
were married.

In all cities recreational settings have environment,
security and safety failures

1332 questionnaires were analysed and show that
partygoers went out in average 3 nights, spend more than
4 hours away from home per night; attend more than 2
cafes/bars/clubs; spend more than 11€ (men more than women).
Coimbra and Porto are student´s nightlife contexts
The majority expects being in a good place to listen to
music, to find friends, with free entrance, clean WC and
without violence. It is not important a place good for dating

Evaluating the process
• Researchers
feel engaged in this multicentre and
participative study and want to continue
• University students were happy to be engaged in this
research, had a high participation and want to continue
• The process facilitated creativity and cultural adaptation
• The research was conducted without financial resources
since each university blamed by the development of the
study
All the engaged students ware more aware of their
vulnerability in recreational context and became
demanding customers
Tips to move further
• Given that much of the partygoers are university students,
engage young people could be one of the solutions to the
binge drinking and related harm
• IREFREA propose to all universities to create a group of
students with some facilitators (teachers and NGO´s) by
developing a network of community mobilization:
1. Engage researcher and NGO
2. Mobilize students (extra curriculum or not)
3. Training course one week
4. Multicentre and multidimensional ethnographic study
5. Share experiences between cities/universities
