Left in the lurch
“Sinistral”, which means located on the left side of the body, or left-handed, is archaically
connected to the word sinister. In Roman times left-handedness was believed to be unlucky
and, remarkably, connections with devilishness persisted until fairly recently.
Thankfully, the 10% of the population who were once considered to hold pencils, cutlery
and other implements the wrong way round are no longer likely to get their knuckles rapped
in schools or have their left-hands tied behind their backs by way of punishment. But modern
living is still frustratingly geared to the dextral majority.
Professor Stanley Cohen, a Canadian psychologist, claims that left-handers are 89%
more accident prone than right-handed people and 25% more likely to have an accident in the
workplace. This is hardly surprising in a world where sinistral office-workers have to make do
with office equipment that not only make their lives difficult, but sometimes dangerous, too.

Backseat Drivers ‘R’ Us
CHILDREN as young as three are to be taught how to become back-seat drivers in order
to keep their parents on the straight and narrow.
Nursery school children will be taught basic driving skills in the hope that they will then
pester their parents into keeping to the 30mph speed limit.
The children will practise the skills in a fleet of toy cars, which they can sit in and push
along with their feet. At the end of the course, they will be presented with their first “ driving
license”. The AA expressed concern that drivers would find the yelling of toddler-drivers
offputting.

The internet today
The internet has been tremendously successful. In the less than four years since opening
its door to commercial growth, the Internet has blossomed into a vibrant marketplace. More
than a third of a million active commercial Websites conducted an estimated $24,400 million
dollars of trade during 1997, according to a study we did at ActivMedia.
Nearly three-fourths of that trade was by companies based in the United States but
rapid expansion by European and Asia – Pacific corporations promises to spread the benefits
of the Net around the world. No area has been left out. China, countries in South America,
Africa and elsewhere are now exploring ways to introduce Net activity consistent with their
cultures and political climates.

My journey: an accidental activist
I wasn’t born to be an activist. Quite the
opposite, really. I was born to be the stereotypical
“good, racist Afrikaner” in Apartheid South
Africa. My family supported Apartheid and all of
them worked for the Apartheid regime at some
stage in their lives.
I grew up in a home that did everything
the Apartheid government wanted us to do.
We were part of the Dutch Reformed Church;
we watched rugby — the sport of the white
Afrikaner. I went to school at Paarl Gymnasium
— one of the best Apartheid schools in South
Africa. I attended the University of Stellenbosch
— the “brain trust” of the Apartheid policies and
politics. We read the Apartheid government
approved newspapers and watched their TV. I
benefited from the education they provided and
the money they paid my dad. I was made for
a life supporting and working for the Apartheid
government.
I was well on my way to become one of them.
I did everything they expected me to do. I was a
young racist Afrikaner, ready to take my place in
their world. Well, at least the small world within
the white community in South Africa.
Somewhere along the line things didn’t work
out the way they planned. I became everything
that Apartheid was against — an activist with a
social conscience who loves being an “African”
on the global stage. Instead of being the man
they wanted me to be, I became the man I
wanted to be. It hasn’t always been easy. It
hasn’t always been fun. But it always felt right.
From Stellenbosch to Seattle, Mali to Monterrey,
and Lusaka to London — no matter where the
road took me, it always felt right, and it always
felt as if I belonged. That’s the beauty of life —
you can be who and what you want to be no
matter where you come from.

a certain villain known as Carnage. Director Sam Raimi who
directed all the previous movies in the franchise will be back in
the director’s chair.
There has been much speculation about who the next
villains might be. In previous interviews, director Raimi was
secretive about the actors who would play the role of The
Sinister Six and Electro. Expect this to be a closely guarded
secret for a while to come.
Apparently there’s also talk of getting Black Cat into the
Spider-Man 4 mix because, if a recordbreaking opening
weekend tells you one thing, it’s that you can never have too
many villains in your Spidey sequels. Venom will probably
not be returning. Word has it that this character will have
its own live-action movie title — screenwriters are already
at work on this.
Spider-Man 4 would have to go a little bit “darker” than
its predecessors to accurately capture the Carnage story,
which focuses on a serial killer called Cletus Kasady. Despite
rumors about the next movie, it seems that both Maguire
and Kirstin Dunst, as his girlfriend Mary Jane, will return.
Spider-Man 4.
Director: Sam Raimi.
U.S. Opening Date: May 2011.
Spider-Man 4 (2011) - Preview
If you’re a serious Spider-Man fan, you’ve probably been
wondering when the producers are finally going to let Dylan
Baker become the super-villain we’ve all been waiting for.
Yes, the one-armed college professor who appears in all
three Spider-Man films (for about 90 seconds at a time) is
the guy who eventually gets turned into man-sized Lizard
with a true hatred for Spider-Man.
According to one source, not only will Baker finally become
The Lizard in Spider-Man 4, but we’ll also have to contend with
