EXHIBITION OPENING, FRIDAY 18th SEPTEMBER, 9H30 PM
Between the 19th September and 21st November, Carpe Diem Arte e Pesquisa will
display works by artists from various countries across three continents. The
exhibitions are connected by the transversal theme of journey, a journey across
civilizations that can lead to exile, loneliness, urban fears, and often barbarity.
Works includes Road to Exile by Barthélémy Toguo (France-Cameroon), Nave by
Albano Afonso and Sandra Cinto (Brazil), In Icti Oculi by Greta Alfaro (Spain), Not
from Concentrates by the artists Jenny & Lee, Linda Hofvander, Nuno Miranda and
Pau Ardid (Sweden, UK, Portugal and Spain), and two collective projects by
Ateliê Fidalga (Brazil) – PhotoFidalga and Entre Tempos.

For his first exhibition in Portugal, Barthélémy Toguo will create a unique installation,
Road for Exile, in the White Room of Palácio Pombal in Lisbon. The piece pays testimony
to the diversity of Toguo’s work, incorporating video, sculpture and drawing. The artist,
with the help of art students, will install a mosquito net which will cover the space to
create an idyllic universe.
In the center of the space, a wooden boat, vulnerable to the sea of glass bottles it rests
upon; an allegory for the treacherous journeys undertaken to reach the “promised land”.
In Road for Exile the artist questions the sense of journey as a dreamland. For Toguo, the
metaphor represents the journey of millions of immigrants who brave the seas in search
of a different reality. Highly politically charged, the piece reflects on the real and the
imaginary, the dreamed and the lived, the desired and the possible. Barthélémy Toguo
says; “We are all in permanent transit. This is a notion inherent to the individual of the
20th/21st century, regardless of race. The individual is in some way exiled, and dragged
by the force of the journey that uproots him. We uproot ourselves and arrive in new
places by different means, bringing with us our culture, which collides with the “other”.
This confrontation can be beautiful or difficult. Journeys happen at the same frenetic
rhythm as our society. We are in constant motion. This is why this notion of “transit” is
more relevant now than ever, although perhaps in different ways with the constant
evolution of society.”

NAVE, by Albano Afonso & Sandra Cinto (Brazil)
With the word NAVE (spacecraft) comes the idea of a space in which to undertake a
journey. But a nave can also be a pod which provides shelter and protection. Such is the
nave created by Albano Afonso and Sandra Cinto, a project in which the artists make the
idea of shelter their own, constructing a space for discovery. The idea is to produce a
Matriuska (the Russian doll which opens to reveal other smaller dolls inside) by creating
a multilayered shelter. This nave welcomes us and creates the comfortable sensation that
we are not drifting in space. Rather, we have access to the outside from the safe interior
of the pod. The installation provides a phenomenological experience by offering glimpses
of the immense vastness that surrounds us. Through small windows and passages we see
sky, light, and infinity, without fear of falling into the abyss. This Nave by Albano Afonso
and Sandra Cinto is a place where the visitor is able to access the oniric world that only
art can offer.

In In ictu oculi (a blink of an eye, from the Latin), the artist reflects on how the
incontrollable is established, on how something that arrives interrupts and cannot be
controlled. The video is the winner of El Mundo’s cultural supplement’s IX Photography
prize. Alfaro analyses the concepts of “the public” and “the private”, trauma, taboos and
double morals, attempting to make apparently stable situations vulnerable, and to reveal
worrying or threatening elements hidden within the mundane. The video’s protagonists
are a group of vultures who devour a banquet.

Almost as a futile reaction to dispersion, the unattainable accumulation of vacuous
information and the ever-increasing levels of use and interpretation of photography, Not
from Concentrates is a photography and video exhibition that reflects on the absence of
consistency under the pressures of technology, culture, feeling and history. A poetic
dimension offers the philosophic notion that life is subject to constant mutation,
something that contracts, expands, and contracts again.

To inaugurate the lower level of the Palácio Pombal, twenty three artists from the Ateliê
Fidalga Study Group have developed site-specific projects which create a dialogue with
the 18th century architecture. A collective exhibition, with drawings, paintings, objects,
videos and exclusive installations, which take inspiration from their privileged locations,
ranging from the palace’s storage rooms to its garden.

Using the maxim of Joseph Beuys that art should be accessible to everyone, enabling
more people to acquire a work of art, Ateliê Fidalga presents the PhotoFidalga project, in
which each artist contributes a photograph within the theme of Carpe Diem. Organized
by Albano Afonso and Sandra Cinto in the city of São Paulo, Ateliê Fidalga is a
communal space for reflection, which functions as a school, residence, and space for
debate for artists, curators, historians and art teachers. The artists currently in

PERSONAL DJ, by the resident artist Susana Guardado – special collaboration

Personal DJ is a project which sits on the boundary between the visual arts and music,
conceived as a way of exploring new forms of coexistence between people from different
professional areas and social groups, within a city or internationally. The exhibition is
part of a fundamental branch of contemporary artistic production which brings together
sound, space and coexistence to broaden the boundaries between art and life. With the
theme Songs for Friends, Susana Guardado and José Mário Brandão will produce a radio
piece during the exhibition opening, on 18th September at 21.30.

MASTERCLASS, with the artist Barthélémy Toguo
17th to 18th September, Thursday and Friday, from 14.00 to 18.00
For art students and artists at the beginning of their career, the objective of this master
class is that participants understand the principles and concepts that guide the artist’s
work, and to encourage discussion of politics and activism through contemporary art.
Bathélémy Toguo will speak about his projects, the questions that move him to create,
and the stylistic devices employed in his creative practice, such as performance, For art
students and artists at the beginning of their career, the objective of this master class is
that participants understand the principles and concepts that guide the artist’s work, and
to encourage discussion of politics and activism through contemporary art. Bathélémy
Toguo will speak about his projects, the questions that move him to create, and the
stylistic devices employed in his creative practice, such as performance, installation,
painting and above all, drawing.
In the words of the artist; “To draw is very important. It is an intimate artistic practice,
fair and sincere, through which one cannot lie or deceive. Drawing is a child’s first
words. It is a very rich discipline, be it done simply with a pencil on a small piece of
paper or on a bigger piece with paints, water-colours… It can be infinitely varied.
Drawing allows me to let go, to visualise my desires and fantasies… translate my
pleasures, pains, my anguishes, to once again express life.”
