(IN)FORMATION BOGA!
Dear Friends,
This is the month when the MostraUP is organized. On its 10th edition,
the event will take place again at Pavilhão Rosa Mota. CIIMAR will be
present and we count on you for all the help...

Paper of the month
CIIMAR publishes
Effects of Dietary Yeast (Saccharomyces cerevisia)
Supplementation in Practical Diets of Tilapia
(Oreochromis niloticus)
Ozório et al., 2012, Animals 2012, 2, 16-24;
doi:10.3390/ani2010016
World communities are concerned about the increasing impact of the aquaculture activities on fisheries
resources. Aquaculture sector uses 2–5 times more
fishmeal to feed farmed species than what is supplied by the farmed product. Therefore, the reduction of fishmeal dependency may provide more economic and environmentally friendly aquaculture. By
identifying alternative protein sources, the authors
find that brewer’s yeast is a suitable raw material as
fishmeal replacement in feed of tilapia. The 15%
inclusion may promote growth without affecting the
end-product quality.
Nitrogen cycle on RAS
Nitrogen is one of the most abundant elements on Earth. Represents about 80% of the atmosphere, is used by living beings in
the metabolism of complex molecules such as proteins, enzymes, nucleic acids, etc.. It is defined as an essential element of
life, being one of the more complex cycles of the environment.
It is called the nitrogen cycle to the set of processes by which
this element cycles through the different ecosystems due to the
action of living organisms.
Ammonia is the main product of the metabolism of aquatic organisms. Ammonia is toxic because it interferes with the transport of oxygen, in high concentrations endangers the lives of
most aquatic organisms. This risk is even more pronounced in
closed ecosystems such as aquariums, tanks and other systems
with recirculating water.
The ammonia dissolved in water exists on two ways: highly toxic
free form (NH3) and an ionized less toxic form (NH4+). The ratio
of the two forms depends on the pH and temperature of water.
The higher the value of the temperature and of the pH, the
greater the percentage of the more toxic form. When pH is less
than 7 most of the ammonia is present in the ionized form,
more prejudicial.
Nature itself "provides" two groups of nitrifying bacteria whose
presence do not imply any danger to aquatic organisms and
which change ammonia in progressively less toxic compounds.
The ammonia is oxidized by Nitrossomonas sp forming nitrite
(NO2-) which is again oxidized by Nitrobacter (Nitrospira sp)
forming nitrate (NO3-), this process is called nitrification.
Together we will have mo re and better research in BOGACIIMAR! Olga Martinez

Yes, it’s a rather small paper! You will read in less than 5

FCT R&D PROJECTS - NATURAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCES
4 Project typologies:
SR&TD Projects - correspond to research projects addressing scientifically
relevant and original issues, with reference to international standards, that contribute significantly to the advancement of knowledge
and produce identified outcomes within the duration of the project
in terms of scientific production and taking into account the priority
research areas defined by public policies. Duration: 2 years; Funding:
200.000 EUR.
A central question in evolutionary genomics is how morphological differences between taxa arise from differences in gene repertoire. Answers require rigorous orthology
assignments. In this letter published in PNAS, the authors
present a set of data that revises substantially the nomenclature of the agouti gene family. Most importantly, the
model presented suggests that the genetic basis of teleost
background adaptation may not root in the agouti family
expansion during the teleost specific genome duplication
but in the ancestral vertebrate genome duplication.

On the Radar...
Exploratory research projects - correspond to a more open scientific
research project configuration intended for the exploration of ideas
or concepts considered as having great originality and/or innovative
potential. Duration: 1 year; Funding: 50.000 EUR.
SR&TD Projects in research lines of excellence - correspond to a structured and coherent organization of the scientific activity in major lines
of research. The scientific or technological goals shall be based upon
clear expected indicators and supported in emerging areas and/or of
excellence consolidation areas identified as priorities for the National
Scientific and Technological System. Duration: 3 years; Funding:
500.000 EUR.
SR&TD Projects of consolidation of research skills and resources - correspond to research projects that by their nature and specificity strongly
depend on material resources and qualified human resources in
order to develop competitive skills, particularly for international
participation programs. Duration: 3 years; Funding: 500.000 EUR.
Note: For the last two typologies, researchers that intend to present proposals
should consult the Direction of the centre in advance.
