 Interview with Juliano Furtado de Mendoça Juliano Furtado de Mendoça is from Minas Gerais, Brazil. He is 31. In Brazil, he worked as a supervisor of teachers. He came to the United States 8 years ago. Now he works in construction and on the weekends with German cars. Sophie Joseph: O que você sabe sobre Caetano Veloso e Gilberto Gil? O que é seu impressão deles? Qual tem sido o papel deles na música e na sociedade brasileira? Can you tell me what you know about Caetano Veloso and Gilberto Gil? What is your impression of them? What has been their role in Brazilian music and society? Juliano Mendoça: Caetano Veloso e Gilberto... eles tem influencia muito grande na música brasileira. Com todo contesto. Eles são boas exemplos de... como eu posso dizer para vocês...? Eles participaram de muito revolução, de muita coisa que aconteceu no Brasil. Principalmente, Caetano Veloso participou diretamente do impitima de Fernando Collor de Melo, o presidente, e tipo assim. Ele foi muito importante. Ele foi uns do principais do movimento de tropicália. Caetano and Gilberto... they had a huge influence on brasilian music. They are a good example of...how can I explain this to you? They participated in a lot of revolutions, a lot of things that were happening in Brazil. Principally, Caetano Veloso played a direct role in the impeachment of Fernando Collor de Melo, the president at the time, a things like that. [Caetano] was very important. He was one of the main figures of the Tropicalia movement. SJ: Você pode me falar um pouco sobre como os músicos brasileiros incorporam as influências estrangeiras, especialmente o rock dos estados unidos, em suas musicas? E como é visto pela sociedade brasileira? Can you talk to me a little about how Brazilian musicians incoporate foregin influences, especially rock from the United States, in their music? And how is it seen by the Brazilian society? JM: Eu acho que hoje em dia, eu acho que desde aquela época que o rock tem influenciado muito os cantores brasileiros do uma forma positiva. No começo, né, do tropicalismo muitos pessoas achavam que ia atropelar de uma certa forma a nossa cultura, mas na verdade foi só uma… integrou uma coisa boa de positiva, né. Era uma coisa mais liberal naquela época. Introduzi coisa lá afora, coisas positivas para aqui, né. E foi influência muita boa e continua influenciando. Antes não vi tanto influência, mas depois de que eu vim para os Estados Unidos que eu fui ver que a muita coisa que a gente faz lá derivado das coisas daqui-­‐-­‐ a musica, o modo de vestir, o jeito de agir, de se vestir. Então existe um grande influência da cultura norte americana e em geral da europeia no brasil. Não somente na musica como uma arte, no comportamento... I think that today, I think that since that time, rock has had a postive influence on Brazilian singers. In the beginning, right, many people thoughy that Tropicalia would destroy our culture in a certain way, but in reality it only.... it integrated a good and poisitve thing. It was something more liberal back then. It introduced something there besides good things here. And it was a very good influence and continues to influence. Before I did not see much of the influence, but after I came to the United States I saw that many of the things that people do over there are derived from things here—the music, the way one act’s, the way one dresses. So, there is a big North American and European influence in Brazil. Not only in music as art, but in behaivor too. SJ: O que tipo de musica brasileira você gosta de escutar agora? What is your favorite type of Brazilian music to listen to now? JM: Eu escuto.. eu gosto de musica em geral. Escuto muito a musica popular brasileira. Escuto muito rock, pop. Eu gosto de “Brazilian country music,” falando sertanejo. Eu gosto um pouquinho de tudo. I listen to... I like music in general. I listen to a lot of Brazilian popular music. I listen to a lot of rock, pop. I like “Brazilian country music,” also known as sertanejo. I like a little bit of everything.
