Porto Alegre R S / B R A ZIL TM 2 CROSSING THE 3 0 ° S PA R A L L E L I T I NERARY IN MOINHOS DE VENTO T h e finest in the city Moinhos de Vento is considered to be the finest neighborhood in the city. This is nothing new and derives from a long history of illustrious residents. From the 1930s, the neighborhood had consolidated itself as an upper class area, being an extension of Av. Independência that had previously held this status. The neighborhood was home to many important businessmen and industrialists of the time, such as the entrepreneur A.J. Renner. Brazilian political figures also circulated in Moinhos de Vento, including former gaúcho Presidents of Brazil Getúlio Vargas and João Goulart, while visiting relatives, and former governor Leonel Brizola, who lived there. Origin The neighborhood's name goes back to the windmills formerly installed near the area and used for grinding wheat, a crop introduced in Porto Alegre in the mid-eighteenth century. It is known that in 1835 the activity had already been discontinued due to the decrease in cultivated area. Some equipment and installations in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century spurred on the development of the neighborhood, such as the "Independencia" trolley cars, created by Companhia Carris Urbanos, the Hidráulica Moinhos de Vento (waterworks), the Prado Independência (hippodrome) and the field of Grêmio Foot-Ball Porto Alegrense (the latter two then located where Parcão now stands). 3 MOINHOS DE VENTO The neighborhood in action Currently, the neighborhood is a hallmark in terms of quality of life, the excellent structure of Parcão and the clean, tree-lined streets. Apart from that, it's also worth visiting Moinhos de Vento for its shops and services, including clothing boutiques, sophisticated home decor and furniture stores and many cafés, bars and restaurants. What it has to offer stands out not only for the quantity of options: when it comes to cuisine, many of "the best in town" are concentrated there. This itinerary provides tips to help you start discovering a neighborhood where every street holds a pleasant surprise! ng. R. E o. I nác io uci Sto . An gel o o ir Ri be R. At the end of the nineteenth century, the old Hydráulica Guaybense installed water tanks in Moinhos. At the time, water was taken from Lake Guaíba and distributed without treatment. In 1904, the locale was bought by the City to modernize the supply in the city. The Hidráulica("Waterworks") provided excellent technical conditions for water treatment, as well as a beautiful architectural design done by Cristiano de La Paix Gelbert and built by Theo Wiedesrsphan. The building and gardens, inspired by the Palace of Versailles, in Paris, are still a great setting for a stroll, resting on the outdoor benches and enjoying the scenery, as has been the custom in the city since the inauguration of the waterworks in 1928. Tip: Visit the art gallery in the basement of the old hydraulic tower. ini rd R. Cel. Bo Bocaiúva bro K 4 R. 2 de tu Ou i eR R. ina rt D ha ga s R. Quintino R. Dr. Timóteo R. No one knows for sure the reason for the nickname, just that it was an allusion to the Hollywood “Walk of Fame” in Los Angeles. Together with Padre Chagas St., Hilário Ribeiro St. and Dinarte Ribeiro St., the area forms the most glamorous itinerary of the city. During the day, the leafy streets, cafés and charming boutiques are cozy venues for strolling and enjoying fine moments. At night, the restaurants, bars and nightclubs, ranging from contemporary to classic style, provide excellent food and fun. Tip: Choose one of the cafés with outdoor tables, settle into the sophisticated ambiance and savor a delicious sparkling wine from Rio Grande do Sul. o Houses of historical and cultural interest 5 229 and 295 Santo Inácio St. Row houses: Luciana de Abreu St., between 24 de Outubro St. and Barão de Santo Ângelo St. Barão de Sant'Angelo St., between Hilário Ribeiro St. and Dinarte Ribeiro St. Félix da Cunha, starting at number 1143. The neighborhood maintains a series of examples of residential buildings dating from the early twentieth century, of great historical and architectural value. These include mansions that housed old established families, linked especially to agriculture, industry and trade, and row houses built in the 1930s for rental at the time. Tip: Thrill to the cafés and shops installed in the old buildings, full of charm and history. Castelo Branco Monument 1 Moinhos de Ventos Park (northwest side) Besides its aesthetic and artistic value, this monument refers back to the controversies it caused. The initiative to honor the first president of the military dictatorship, Mal. Castelo Branco, sprang from groups linked to trade and industry associations in the state. Three artists were invited: Xico Stockinger and Vasco Prado, who turned down the job due to their dissent with the military regime, and Carlos Tenius, who developed the work which was composed of a huge set of three soldiers, 28 meters tall. The sculpture leaves out any winged compositions, common in other works of the artist, since they refer to freedom, an ideal that was far from being a reality at the time. Tip: Look closely at the monument and build your own perception. Some argue that the long thin bases demonstrate the lack of stability of the soldiers and their distance from the people. Moinhos de Vento Park (Parcão) Comendador Caminha Street (no street number) The 11.5 hectare area is dissected by Av. Goethe, carving out two distinct spheres in Parcão. The two areas are well-frequented from the early hours of the morning until late afternoon for walking, jogging and cycling. 2 Weekends in Parcão are synonymous with beautiful people, rounds of chimarrão on the grass and relaxation. The sports facilities offer tennis courts, bocce courts, skating and athletics tracks and soccer and multipurpose courts. The park has pretty gardens and a lake inhabited by turtles, geese, teals and fish. Tip: Visit a beautiful replica of an Azorean windmill where a library for children and youth operates.
