Abstract Resumo Optometry in our geographical area is a relatively new and unknown profession; even considering that the first book on the specialty entitled “Uso Uso de los anteojos” anteojos has been written by Benito Daza de Valdés, in Spain in 1623. 1623 Most of optometrist colleagues do not charge for their services in a direct way. This paradoxal situation is caused mainly by the historical background of the profession, when the optician has evaolved and accumulated different tasks from “Optician Maker” of lenses, to “Optician Seller” of elaborated products until the “Optician-Optometrist”, “Optician prescriptor of ophthalmic solutions, eventually manufactured by third party. In addition to the accumulation of tasks (prescribe, dispense and manipulate) there has been the addition of other tasks that even being alien to the professional background have also been assumed as management, accounting or marketing, etc changing the optical shop owner in a multitask professional. Despite this diversity of functions, the profit is only made from the selling ng of products, without charging for the professional honorarium. The remarkable change in the attitude of many colleagues is creating the opportunity to increase awareness and promote social recognition of our profession. This changing reality will be object obj of discussion in this presentation.
