Self Development Charter School announces EXCITING NEWS
Submitted by Anjum Majeed
Principal
M
any exciting events are happening at Self
Development Charter School (SDCS).
Recently, Self Development received the
2010 Charter School of the Year award from the Arizona
Charter Schools Association. This year, we are celebrating
our 10th anniversary. Additionally, we are pleased to
announce we are expanding our facility to add two more
classrooms and a science and technology center.
The new science and technology center at SDCS aligns
an inquiry-based approach with educational research. The
students will use hands-on experience to incorporate metacognitive learning, including predicting, observing, inferring,
analyzing and reporting data.
In addition, the students will perform experiments
in the fields of chemistry,
biology and
physics to enhance the understanding of the subject matter
taught in classes. The students
also will be introduced to the
careers in science and technology
by participating in programs with
exposure in the fields of architecture, drafting, engineering, robotics
and digital video.
Our unique technology-based
curriculum provides opportunities
for excelling students to undertake
an accelerated path when they
enter high school, as well as earn
college scholarships and compete
successfully for entrance to highly ranked colleges. Excelling
students completing our Middle School Program
also may have the opportunity to take Advanced
Placement exams in biology, Latin and Spanish.
Our technology center will provide opportunities for students to experience blended
learning. Blended learning incorporates
in-class lectures with online and distance
learning. Our current Latin classes use
blended learning.
Students at SDCS experience high
quality learning in a school culture,
which minimizes social pressure often
associated with middle school years.
The school’s philosophy
maximizes each student’s
potential. By introducing
the subject matter in
the field of science and
technology, students feel
they have the capability
to excel.
Our curriculum
enhances development
of sound fundamentals,
increases curiosity, and
makes the students want
to conduct research and
explore new ideas. This level
of knowledge will result in critical thinking and the learning
skills necessary to succeed in college.
You can be assured of our faculty’s dedication to the
student’s best interest. The school’s principal and faculty
take personal interest in each student’s development performance and progress. Our students have a can-do attitude,
and they are eager to learn more. 

CHARTER SCHOOL OF THE YEAR AWARD

W
ith Self Development Charter School
(SDCS) winning the 2010 Charter School
of the Year Award from the Arizona
Charter Schools Association, the school can proudly
add yet another recognition to its comprehensive list of
accomplishments.
“We are excited about this honor,” stated principal
Anjum Majeed. This was the first time SDCS was
nominated for this award—and won.
“The committee evaluated our school through
interviews and site visits on many levels,” Ms. Majeed
stated. “Teacher-student teamwork in the classrooms,
data-driven teaching methods, and the learning growth
index were some of the criteria.”
Unique at SDCS, the principal engages in a high
level of involvement in the classrooms. At times, Ms.
Majeed reviews a whole week’s worth of work from a
set of students to monitor their progress.
“Sometimes I teach, sometimes I observe the classroom, or I pull students out for coaching,” the principal
described. “Teachers may ask me to teach a concept or
co-teach a class. I try to have a conference with each one of
my students.”
SDCS, winning No. 1 Highest Performing School
in Arizona by the School Digger Web site in 2009, has
continuously qualified as an excelling school by the
PhillipsWest
Arizona Department of Education.
Founded in 2000, SDCS quickly grew from 37
students to 280 strong. After expanding into seventh
and eighth grades, the publicly funded school has again
reached capacity and is looking to add more classrooms.
This vote of confidence for SDCS comes from
parents who observe their children blossom through
the well-guided academic challenges. In the pursuit
of creating lifelong learners, SDCS staff nurtures the
students with compassion, courage, and collaboration to
excel each through harnessing their particular strengths.
“We address every student’s individual needs so they
can be successful,” Ms. Sherri Cote, founding staff and
senior teacher, said. “The rigorous challenge brings all

students up to level.”
“When I started
with SDCS, I could
see Ms. Majeed’s
vision, even with
the small class size
we had,” the educator recalled. “Our
staff works out the curriculum together by continuously
inputting changes in response to the dynamics in the
classroom.”
“We have high expectations of our students,” stated
Ms. Lori Baeder, student coach and front desk staff
for six years. “By developing a good bond, teachers can
make students rise up to the expectations. Not only
do students want to please, but they also feel proud of
themselves through their accomplishments.”
“SDCS is more than the sum of its academic
performance,” principal Majeed summarized. “We have a
special atmosphere here. You can observe how much kids
enjoy learning and critical thinking. We set expectations
high and make learning fun.” 
Self Development Charter School is located at
1709 N. Greenfield Road, near Walmart. To find out
more about the school, or to make an appointment for a

BANNER BAYWOOD OPENS MEMORY
clinic to identify, treat disorders
By Corey Schubert
Public Relations Specialist
B
anner Baywood Medical Center
recently opened a Memory
Clinic to provide assessments
for people who are concerned about
memory loss, Alzheimer’s disease and
other cognitive impairment.
The Memory Clinic provides a
consultation service that includes cognitive testing, diagnosis, treatment and
guidance for adults who have problems
with memory. The clinic is located adjacent to Banner
Baywood in a medical office building at 6553 E. Baywood
Ave., Suite 212 in Mesa.
Memory loss that is more than expected with age,
or mild cognitive impairment, may be a precursor to
Alzheimer’s disease or related dementia. Research supports
that early detection and treatment may be most effective
in delaying the onset and progression of disabling memory
loss and function. The Baywood memory clinic is designed
to identify the precursors to cognitive impairment and
bring the resources of the hospital’s neurosciences to bear
in providing treatment
options.
“The Memory Clinic
expands Baywood’s
neuroscience service line
and complements our certified Stroke Center, further
establishing the facility
as a leader in caring for
patients with these types
of diagnoses,” says Banner
Baywood Chief Medical Officer Larry Spratling.
Baywood’s memory loss care specialists work to
customize a specific plan tailored to the precise needs of
the patient and family as they change over time. These
services include:
• Memory assistance and planning services
• Medication management
• Connection to community resources
• Communication strategies
• Day-to-day living tips
Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias are a
rapidly escalating national health care crisis and have
been recognized as the sixth leading cause of death in
the United States. Alzheimer’s disease affects 5.3 million
Americans and approximately one in every eight people
ages 65 or older.
Memory disorders can also stem from a number of
other causes, such as stroke, dementia, Parkinson’s disease,
brain tumor or epilepsy. Depression, chronic pain, certain
medications and high levels of stress can also contribute to
reduced memory. 
The Memory Clinic is available through self or physician
referral. Medicare assignment and other recognized plans are
accepted. To schedule an appointment, call (480) 543-6750.

M
esa chiropractor Dr. Lynn
Knuth has a deep understanding of why people are
looking for natural, effective ways to get
rid of pain.
“My patients come to me looking
for answers on pain management after
having taken a variety of medications or
even having had surgery,” Dr. Knuth said.
“When they are at their wits end, I'm
often a last resort.”
The human body is created to be
self-healing. (If you cut yourself, you heal.
When you get a cold, you get better.) In
addition to chiropractic care, Dr. Knuth
uses homeopathy. "Homeopathy has
long been used as a scientific system of
health care that activates the body’s own
healing abilities,” she said. “Homeopathy
uses small doses of substances from
plant, mineral or animal kingdoms, which
switches on the body’s natural ability."
SOME FACTORS MAKING
HOMEOPATHY DESIRABLE

REAL ESTATE
REALTOR PLAYS ROLE IN
changing lives with housing
By John Karadsheh
W
hile most of you who are reading
this publication are fortunate
enough to either own or rent a
home, there are many in our community who
do not have a place to call their own.
On any given day, it is estimated there
are tens of thousands of
homeless individuals in
Arizona with families
representing the fastest
growing segment of this
population.
I have the honor
of serving on the board
of directors of Save the
Family Foundation of
Arizona, a local nonprofit
organization with a
mission to empower homeless families to
become self-sufficient. While most of my
days are spent working with clients to find
that perfect home with the right number of
bedrooms, bathrooms and garages, my work
with Save the Family is all about meeting the
basic needs of families and providing them a
place to finally call home.
Save the Family maintains more than
70 homes – ranging from two-bedroom
apartments to three-bedroom houses. Each
home shelters a formerly homeless family
for up to 24 months (the average stay is just
seven and one-half months) while the family
participates in a comprehensive program to
help them achieve self-sufficiency.
I was amazed when I discovered I could
help a homeless family gain the skills to
achieve lifelong independence for free! By
taking advantage of the Working Poor Tax
Credit, my donation to Save the Family yields
a dollar-for-dollar tax credit of up to $400
on my Arizona state income tax return.*
That $400 contribution provides all the
services a homeless family needs for a week
and one day. Rather than send this money
to the state, I take
comfort in knowing
my contribution
to Save the Family
is helping families
in my community
immediately.
For more
information about
the tax credit, and
to learn about
volunteer opportunities for you or your organization, please
visit www.SaveTheFamily.org.
*AZ state taxpayers can redirect up to $400
for married couples filing jointly or $200 for
taxpayers filing as single or head of household. This credit is completely separate from
school tax credits. As with all tax-deductibility issues, please contact your tax advisor
for information regarding eligibility. 

Since 1978, Aveda has been the
forerunner in creating high perfor-mance beauty products formulatedd
with plant-based ingredients. In
fact, Aveda is one of world’s largestt
purchasers of organic ingredients
for personal care items.
“When I started my beauty
career 15 years ago, it was in an
Aveda salon,” Maytee said. “They
had just come out with their
new hair color products, created
with 98 percent plant products
rs
from around the world. Customers
still love them, because they have lustrous shades,” she
continued, “and Aveda’s color line isn’t as damaging to the
hair as other color lines can be.
“Once people try our product lines, they remain
steadfastly loyal. It’s almost like a cult following,” Maytee
said with a laugh. “But the real reason is that Aveda’s
natural products actually do what they say they will do.”
According to this salon and spa owner, Aveda offers full
lines of skin care for all skin types, including anti-aging regimens, specialty issues, such as acne, and gorgeous makeup.
“All of our facials, peels and moisturizers not only work great,’
she stated, “but have fantastic natural essential oil fragrances.”
Natural essences also infuse their hair care lines for
smoothing and repairing hot-tool damage. Their newest
offering, Be Curly, allows for curly hairstyles without the frizz.
“In addition to being highly creative professionals,”
Maytee said, “our stylists and aestheticians receive Aveda
training and on-going education to become expert in using
Aveda skin and hair care products, so they can offer Aveda
Signature Services, such as our Elemental Nature Facial or
Aromatherapy Chakra Massage, to our clients.
“As an Aveda salon, we are ppart of a worldwide organization that believes Beauty
is as Beauty Does,” she
explained. “Not only
does Aveda promote
natural beauty care for the
individual, but also caring
for the planet by supporting
worldwide efforts in
recycling, clean water rights,

When Aveda discovered the U.S. has no recycling
for plastic bottle caps, they created a recycling program
for water bottle and other bottle caps, and reuse them in
manufacturing product packaging. Aveda salons are cap
collection sites, and True Essence has a bin set up for those
who want to participate. 

LOAN MODIFICATION could force you into foreclosure

The bank finally denied the loan application, and

ith so many homeowners struggling to pay their
mortgages, one of the options they turn to is a
loan modification, but while this seems like a
great idea, unfortunately, very few are approved.
Less than one percent of loan applications
have been accepted as permanent modifications.
Many homeowners end up in the trial period
only to be denied a few months later or get a loan
modification reducing their monthly payment but
by such a small amount, it really doesn’t help.
Unfortunately, there is another major flaw
in the loan modification process of which most
homeowners are unaware.
While the bank is working on your loan modification (this can take months), you may not be
making your mortgage payments or not be paying
them in full. As you become more delinquent, the
bank will start foreclosure proceedings even though
they are working on your loan modification.

There is no admission fee to watch the fun.
A pair of additional fund-raisers is planned at the Gilbert

Bellagio Pizzeria offers variety of
dishes and friendly atmosphere
M
ike Bipar, owner of Bellagio
Pizzeria, seamlessly blends old
and new to produce a familyfriendly neighborhood restaurant with
wide ranging menu selections.
Papa Jay’s Pizza was a family-run
pizzeria in Tempe for more than a decade.
Mike moved the restaurant to its current
location near McKellips and Greenfield
roads, across from Mesa’s Falcon Field Airport.
Even though Papa Jay’s
Pizza is now Bellagio
Pizzeria, Mike has
maintained the many
delicious original
recipes made
popular by the
former owners
and, in addition,
offers much more.
For example, Mike
has expanded the
culinary offerings to
include Mediterranean
and Middle Eastern dishes.
Also on the menu are
hand-tossed pizzas, specifically, the
New York-style variety. These pizzas can be
ordered on whole-wheat crusts. In keeping
with the Mediterranean theme, custom
pizzas are served on lavosh bread, which is a
thin, leavened flatbread baked similarly to a
cracker. Your choice of toppings includes artichoke hearts and spinach, eggplant, zucchini,
sun-dried tomatoes and feta cheese.
Souvlaki-style, shish-kebab meats are on
the menu, as well as homemade pasta dishes.
The lamb shanks are marinated in
herbs and served with dill rice topped with
dried walnuts and cranberries. A Greek
salad is included, too.
If your appetite dictates starters only,
you are in luck. Your options are varied
and range from hummus and taboule, to
chicken wings and mozzarella cheese sticks.
A particular favorite is the Mediterranean
combo sampler, which includes baba
ghanoush, falafel, taboule and dolmas,
served with tzatziki sauce and warm pita
bread. Topping off the sampler are
two kinds of hummus.
Homemade desserts
include zeppoles. This
popular bite-size menu
item comes to your
table as a warm stack
of puffy fried dough
covered in powdered
sugar. Cannolis,
baklava and tiramisu
round off the homemade dessert favorites.
During the dinner
hour, this family-friendly
restaurant becomes especially
busy. Booths line the Old World-style
wall, which offers a sense of a little Italy
and the Mediterranean. The patios also fill
up quickly.
Restaurant hours are 11 a.m. to 9 p.m.,
Monday through Friday, and 10 a.m. to 10
p.m. on Saturday. Sunday hours are 10 a.m.
to 8:30 p.m.
Bellagio Pizzeria is located at 4545 E.
McKellips Road. 

very hour, one American dies from
oral cancer, and the growing number
of cases diagnosed are not caused
from smoking or alcohol abuse. Oral cancer deaths are now higher than
deaths from cervical, testicular, laryngeal
or thyroid cancer. Research now shows the
human papilloma virus, also referred to as
HPV, is being linked to oral cancer at an
alarming rate. Oral cancer is detectable
and treatable if caught in the early stages.
The bad news is, when most oral cancers
are detected, it is in the later stages.
The survival rate jumps to 80 percent
when oral cancer is caught early. Many
avenues are now available to assist in
detecting oral cancer at the early stages.
One of the newest technologies cleared
by the Federal Drug Administration for
assistance in detecting cancerous and
precancerous lesions is the Velscope™
oral cancer screening system. This LED
dental device is used to aid in the detection
of precancerous and cancerous lesions.
We are pleased to announce Las
Sendas Dental Health now has the
enhanced ability to detect oral cancer
at the early stages by routinely offering
the Velscope™ screening service to our
patients. It is recommended this lifesaving screening be performed once a year,
as is the case with all other annual exams.
This screening is quite simple and
takes only a couple of minutes. It is
completely painless. We are grateful, yet sad to note
we have found cancerous lesions in
the last year with our own patients.
These patients have gone under, or are
currently going through, cancer treatment. We pray for the continuation
of their recovery. Without detection,
these lesions would have led to eventual death. Although guarded, we are
even more excited to say we were able
to detect an abnormal lesion on one
of our own team members, which has
been biopsy-confirmed to be benign. Yet,
it is an abnormal condition we now will be
able to watch annually for any changes.
April is Oral Cancer Awareness
Month. Let us show you our life-saving,
pain-free procedure. 

hile every golfer has a picture in mind of
the perfect golf swing, for most golfers, this
picture is of a Tour player, and the image
focuses on what the Tour player’s body is doing.
What you really need to do is blow this snapshot up,
and focus in on how the player’s clubface looks at impact.
Most golf instruction is based upon what professional
players do, but it also makes assumptions. By teaching a
recreational golfer the advanced techniques of how a Tour
player moves his body, it is assumed the recreational golfer

how to use the
That is a big, and, in most cases, mistaken assumption.
At the OB Sports Golf Academy, we do not make
such assumptions. We make sure every one of our
students goes through Golf 101 by teaching them how
to square the clubface properly through wrist hinge and
forearm rotation. This is the only place to start, since
t majority
the
of golfers slice

balls, and
t only thing

directly responsible for a slice is
an open clubface.

ORGANIZING
LOOK AND FEEL GREAT for spring STAY ORGANIZED AND MAINTAIN
By Deb Budnick, RN
E
ven though I have lived in Arizona
for five and one-half years, I am
always surprised how quickly the
hot weather approaches.
Case in point, one week it is chilly and
60 degrees, and the next week we reach
temperatures of more than 80 degrees.
Are you feeling and looking your
best for the summer season? Whether
you are vacationing
or lounging by the
pool…
• Keep your
immune system
healthy with a
vitamin IV or
B12 injection.
• Get on a good
daily vitamin
regimen with our
physician-grade
supplements.
• Get the winter
weight off
with our very
successful HCG diet program.
• Fix that fatty problem area permanently before summer with our
laser-assisted liposuction.
Our vitamin IVs take about an hour
and are worth the time. They are packed full
of vitamins C and B, magnesium, zinc and
selenium. We include a free B12 injection
with the purchase of the vitamin IV. If you
don’t have an hour to spend getting the IV,
consider getting a B12 injection. We offer
two types of B12 injections, starting at $15
each. They increase energy, support a healthy
immune system and support weight loss.
At DreamBody, we carry physician-
grade vitamins.

Here are just a

to help you stay

1. Use chalkboard paint

• in the laundry room on the wall next to
the door. I suggest something like Don't

like can be found at http://www.

addition to using them for magazines, I
recommend
• labeling them outgoing mail or John's

• Setting them in your office to help
categorize on-going projects.
• Using one in the kitchen for recipes of
the week.
• Storing catalogs.

GOLF ETIQUETTE: What You Need to Know to Walk Like a Pro
By Ben Weir, Lead Instructor
Malaska International Golf at Las Sendas
T
he game of golf relies on the individual player to
show consideration for other golfers while abiding
by many written and unwritten rules.
This approach protects the
integrity and spirit of the game.
New and advanced golfers alike are
often in need of advice concerning
customary golf behavior, which
allows everyone to play safely,
respectfully and without delay.
Regardless of how competitive golfers may be, they should
always conduct themselves
in a disciplined manner,
demonstrating courtesy and
sportsmanship at all times.
Here are a few tips to help get
maximum enjoyment out of
your game.
d a level
l l off enjoyj
Proper golf etiquette will provide
ment for yourself and those around you, which only can
enhance your experiences on the course. It begins with
your consideration for other players. Players should
not disturb their fellow competitors play by talking,
moving or making any unnecessary noise (cell phones)
while preparing to hit each shot anywhere on the course.
Golfers should never stand too close to a player, his
ball or directly behind the hole when play is about to
commence.
On the teeing ground, a player should not tee his
ball until it is his turn to play. The player with the
lowest score on the previous hole plays away first. On
the putting green, one should always be cognizant of his
shadow or not stepping on or near a player’s line of putt.
If you are the chosen one in the group to be scorekeeper
that day, only ask a player’s score on the way to the next
tee once the hole is completed. It is impolite to ask a
competitor his score during the hole or on the green of
the current hole.
Pace of play is of unbounded extent in terms of
enjoyment for your fellow players and those playing
behind you on the course. Play at a good pace, and do
your best to keep up with the group in front of you at
all times. Be ready when it is your turn to play. It’s not
an excuse to play slowly if you are
a novice player, or not
highly skilled at this
point in your
golf career. Slow
play takes the
enjoyment out
of the game for
you and others
around you.
The United
States Golf
Association has
set specific guide-lines and rules,
which each player should follow. When it is your turn
to make a stroke anywhere on the golf course, if you do
your preparation and swing within 45 seconds, you will
never create disturbances for anyone on the golf course.
It is a good rule of thumb to do much of the preparation
for your swing while the other players are attempting
their shots.
Caring for the course is of ultra importance on my
list of suggestions. Do your best to repair divots, ball
marks and any damage respective to the course as long
as you do not interfere with pace of play while doing so.
There is an unwritten golden rule in the golf industry.
Specifically, when you make a ball mark on the greens,
fix two, and when you make a divot in the fairway, fix
yours and one more. If everyone did this, the golf course
would remain lush and ready for future players.
Lastly, do your best to always prevent any unnecessary damage to the course. Examples would be leaning
on the flagstick, pressing your putter against the green
like a cane, or standing too close to the hole, where
you could stumble and create damage to the cup. If
you happen to notice another player unknowingly
doing something out of
c

it is not against

The tickets are on a first-come, first-serve basis while

now’s the time!” he exclaimed.“This is a real men’s barbershop,

Mike said the shop caters to men and boys only.
