On yesterday’s board 27 they had a few tough decisions to make. Board 27 None Vul. A 9 4 87 J 10 9 6 5 4 98 8 5 3 2 A KQ32 10 6 5 4 KQ6 10 6 4 87 AKQJ7 J 10 7 KQJ9532 A 32 The bidding started 3 – pass – pass to Virginia. What should she do now? 3NT is a much bigger gamble than on the hand I wrote yesterday. You only have 5 running tricks and you are relatively long in openers suit which diminishes the chance that partner has stopper or two. 4 risks passing 3NT or losing a 5-3 Spade fit. Virginia doubled and I guess I would have doubled as well. There are a few dropbacks like ending up on a Moysian 4-3 Spade fit or a 5-2 Diamond fit when you have 5-4 Club fit, but you will end up in 3NT when that’s right and 4 Spades when that’s right. You may even end up in 3 x when that’s right. 5 12th International Bridge Festival MADEIRA As it was Gustavo did bid 4 and they ended up losing their 9 card Club fit (you had been warned). But that’s not necessarily a bad thing! See what happened: The lead was the 8 to declarer’s Ace. Gustavo (sitting West) now played a small trump to the King that held. Next came a Diamond, South having to take his singleton Ace. He returned a Heart ruffed by declarer. Again Gustavo played a trump to the Queen, that held again. At this time the contract seemed certain unless South had opened 3 with a four card Spade suit on the side, so he went for the overtrick. He played dummy’s last Heart ruffing with his last trump. When North refused to overruff he was able to go to dummy in Clubs a play a Spade, collecting 11 tricks and 74 out of 76 matchpoints. Well done. Of course NS could have done much better. Had North came in with the A on the second round of trumps and given South a Diamond ruff, South could have beaten the contract by returning a Heart. North would still have the 9 to overruff declarer. By the way, for those who don’t know, here is the definition of Moysian fit (as taken from the bridge dictionary on LOLbridge.com) Moysian Fit: What you throw when your idiot partner keeps raising your 4-card major to game with only 3-card support.
