BIG SOUTH WOMEN’S TENNIS WEEKLY REPORT • CONFERENCE NOTEBOOK • MARCH 13, 2012
CAMPBELL
Campbell finished the week 1-0 after a 6-1 victory over Georgia Southern
... The Camels are currently riding a six-match winning streak, and their
9-2 record is the best ten match start since 2007 ... Campbell will begin
a four match home stand March 17 against Hampton.
CHARLESTON SOUTHERN
CSU enjoyed a 4-3 victory over a UNC Greensboro team which came into
the match fresh off a win over previously undefeated Big South member
Coastal Carolina ... CSU also split four of its matches against No. 67 UNC
Wilmington, and led three others, before play was postponed due to rain
... OLGA MAKHOVA and MARIJA DZAKOVIC combined to give the Bucs
their only win at doubles, while YVONNE HUBLER, Dzakovic,
ALEXANDRA WALTERS, and ALIA NOUR provided singles wins from spots
3-6 ... This is an action-packed week for the Bucs, as they will also visit
College of Charleston on March 17, and UMass on March 19.
COASTAL CAROLINA
Coastal Carolina dropped its first match of the season on March 6 to UNC
Greensboro, 2-5 ... They bounced back with a 6-1 over Temple at the Billy
Nichols Tennis Center, extending their home record to 7-1 ... Coastal will
travel to Winter Park, Fla. to play a pair of non-Conference matches
against Quinnipiac and Rhode Island followed by a Conference match on
Saturday in Boiling Springs against Gardner-Webb.
GARDNER-WEBB
Gardner-Webb stayed hot this week, going 3-0 in matches against Liberty,
Siena and Savannah State to push its current win streak to five consecutive matches ... The Runnin’ Bulldogs success continues to come from the
top, as the No. 1, 2, and 3 positions all played key roles in the Conference
win at Liberty as well as the sweeps of the Saints and Tigers ... ERICA
WHITE and ALICE HOPKINS are a combined 22-2 in singles play this season, as Gardner-Webb’s primary No. 1 and 2 players, respectively, have
risen to the challenge in leading Coach JIM CORN’s team thus far in 2012.
LIBERTY
Liberty snapped its six-game slide, defeating Coker by a 9-0 margin ...
Liberty also fell to 0-2 in Big South matches this week, falling to GardnerWebb by a 4-3 decision ... The loss was the Lady Flames’ third defeat by
a 4-3 margin this season ... The Lady Flames have a full week with five
matches on slate ... Three contests will take place in Orlando, Fla., for
the team’s spring break trip ... The team will then make up a Big South
contest with Charleston Southern on the March 16, before hosting
Hampton on March 17.
PRESBYTERIAN COLLEGE
PC went 3-1 last week before seeing its five-match win streak come to an
end with a narrow 4-3 loss to South Dakota ... The Blue Hose picked up
wins over Robert Morris, Saginaw Valley State and Upper Iowa ...
PATRICIA ALVES improved to 9-3 in singles play, leading the team in that
category ... PAIGE OELKE enters the week with six consecutive wins and
CARA CARUSO has five .... The team’s next Big South Conference match
comes on March 24 at Campbell.
RADFORD
Radford went a perfect 4-0 this week and improved their record to 10-4
overall.
UNC ASHEVILLE
UNC Asheville played once last week and fell at Appalachian State, 7-0 ...
The Bulldogs get back into action at Western Carolina on March 14 and
then hosts Winthrop Sunday afternoon ... Freshman JENNA DODGE is 6-4
for the Blue & White at the No. 4 singles position.
WINTHROP
The Eagles came up a bit short from capturing a momumental victory
over #29 Brown, falling 4-3 at the Wake Forest Tennis Complex ...
YASMINE ALKEMA led the Eagles with a perfect day, winning in No. 1 doubles and No. 1 singles ... Winthrop will travel to UNC Asheville on March
