Substituindo o MiG-21
Voltemos meio século no tempo. Em 1961, a IAF optou pelo
MiG-21 em detrimento de vários outros competidores ocidentais porque a União Soviética ofereceu à Índia transferência total de tecnologia e licença para sua produção local. Assim, em
1964, o MiG-21 se tornou o primeiro jato de combate supersônico a entrar em serviço na IAF. Cerca de 120 foram comprados da URSS antes da HAL iniciar a sua produção sob licença. A
HAL construiu um total de 657 MiG-21FL, MiG-21M e MiG-21Bis
(sendo 225 Bis). Cinquenta anos depois, o MiG-21 continua formando a espinha dorsal da IAF, que continua operando mais
