Few years later, it went on to serve for the development of inventory stocks of assets and surveys, with the support of UNESCO, aiming at the preservation of the city of Ouro Preto. The land was salted, and nothing else should then be built on the site. In 1928, a new house was built there. Today, the former home of Tiradentes is the headquarters of Associação Comercial de Ouro Preto (the Trade Association of Ouro Preto), founded in the mid 1930s. 62 Ouro Preto Guide Documento:Guia INGLES - OK.pdf;Página:63;Data:03 de Jul de 2014 13:55:06 (Casa de Tomás Antônio Gonzaga) Rua Cláudio Manoel, 61 - Centro +55 (31) 3559-3256 Mon-Fri: 9 am – 6 pm www.ouropreto.mg.gov.br The colonial-style construction of the 18th century is the house where poet Tomás Antônio Gonzaga – conspirator of Minas Gerais – lived from 1782 to 1788, when it became a meeting point for leaders of the Minas Conspiracy. Gonzaga is the author of one of the most famous love stories of Brazilian literature when he, using the pseudonym Dirceu, wrote beautiful and famous poems for his muse Maria Dorotéia, known as Marília de Dirceu, the nickname that gives title to the work. Today, the building houses the headquarters of Secretaria Municipal de Turismo e Cultura de Ouro Preto (Municipal Bureau of Tourism and Culture of Ouro Preto), beyond temporary exhibitions. The lawn behind the house is the object of exceptional care, and its location provides a nice overview of Pico do Itacolomi (Itacolomi Peak). In the backyard, the visitor also finds a tank that was used by slaves. The ruins of ancient stone walls, grids and wood fires remain exposed as a mark of the period of construction of the building: past and present integrate harmoniously. The Cultural Center, is the primary receptive area of Ouro Preto: services of tourist information and suggestions for tours are offered free of charge; it has two large arts galleries that receive temporary exhibitions. There is also a cafe and a bookstore specializing in travel books and articles on the history of Minas Gerais. A Producing Unit of Pig Iron, a Mechanical Workshop and sheds for storage of raw materials and finished products were subsequently deployed. Activities remained until the mid-60s. Onsite, a small foundry and a sawmill continued to operate, and gradually various sectors of the university were built, such as the warehouse sector, the files sector and the sports court. With the objective of fostering the touristic, scientific and cultural potential of Ouro Preto, the University Council of the UFOP, in 1993, authorized the transformation of the Metallurgical Park in an area designed to accommodate conventions, starting the process of implementation of Centro de Artes e Convenções de Ouro Preto, or the Arts and Conventions Center of UFOP. The venue was opened in 2001 and consolidated itself as a reference in the Convention market; it can host national and international events, creating a significant source of additional resources to the traditional seasonal tourism. 66 Ouro Preto Guide Documento:Guia INGLES - OK.pdf;Página:67;Data:03 de Jul de 2014 13:55:12 (Estação Ferroviária - Passeio de Trem) Praça Cesário Alvim - Barra +55 (31) 3551-7310 / 3551-7705 Saturdays and holidays: 10 am and 2:30 pm. The center of Ouro Preto displays a statue in honor of the martyr of the Minas Conspiracy - Tiradentes. At that location, in 1792, his head was hung with the intention of inhibiting future movements against the Portuguese Crown. It is noted that, curiously, the statue has its back to the then official residence of the Governor. Praça Tiradentes features two impressive buildings: Museu da Inconfidência (the Conspiracy Museum) and Museu de Ciência e Técnica (the Science and Technique Museum). Composing the complex, there are wonderful colonial houses, where we highlight the various homes that were designed by Brigadier José Fernandes Pinto Alpoim. Among them is the house of Don Manoel of Portugal and Castro, who was the last Governor of the Province of Minas Gerais in the colonial period, and Casa da Baronesa (the Baroness’ House) – current headquarters of Câmara Municipal de Ouro Preto (the City Council of Ouro Preto). It is a tradition that came from Portugal, with the chapels open to visitors during Holy Week, when they are decorated with flowers, ribbons and lace towels to relive the steps of Christ's Passion. During processions, there are moments of stoppages in front of the steps, when prayers and chanted religious songs are performed. Ouro Preto Guide 77
